“…The study found that only 12 pairs of twins met all the three criteria (29.2%), nine pairs met two criteria (21.9%), alternative cause of death was offered in five pairs of twins (121%), and in the remaining 15 pairs (36.6%) only limited information was available. In 2007, a case of simultaneous infant death syndrome [4] was described in which both infants were healthy and did not have any serious medical history, except for the fact that 2 days prior to deaths the twins had received the second dose of oral polio, DPT, and the first dose of hepatitis B vaccines. Death scene investigation, judicial investigation, parental assessment, macroscopic and microscopic autopsy findings, and toxicological analysis were consistent for SIDS.…”

“…The sudden unexpected and unexplained death of both members of a set of healthy twins (simultaneous sudden infant death syndrome-SSIDS) is defined as a case in which both infants meet the definition of SIDS individually; infants must be either monozygotic or dizygotic pairs; death must occur within 24 h of each other [9]. SSIDS occurs very rarely; a search of the world medical literature resulted in only 42 reported cases of SSIDS [4,9].…”

“…There are only a few studies that have been conducted in Turkey about cases of SIDS (Arıcan, Fincancı, Sözen, & İnce, 1994; Balcı, Tok, Kocatürk, Yenilmez, & Yorulmaz, 2007; Koturoğlu et al., 2004). SIDS is rarely diagnosed in Turkey, probably because of the deficiencies in the course of differential diagnosis.…”

“…In particular, several reports indicate that Bordetella pertussis (a)symptomatic infections and immunization against diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus (DPT) [6,7] might cause SD [8][9][10][11][12][13]. However, the role of B. pertussis infection and, more generally, of microbial infections in SD remain to be determined [14][15][16], possibly because of an incomplete knowledge of the precise molecular basis and pathomechanisms linking microbiological findings to SD [9,17].…”

Moreover, in conflict with a role of anti-DPT immunization in SD [6,7], epidemiological studies found that unimmunized infants or those immunized late were at increased risk of SD [18,19]. With regard to this last factor, a hypothesis is that SD could result from inflammatory responses to bacterial toxins.…”
