The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a pop dance exergaming protocol on fall risk factors-depressive symptoms, fear of falling, and musculoskeletal function-in community-dwelling older female fallers and nonfallers. There were 47 community-dwelling older women assigned to the intervention group (IG) [fallers (n = 10, 69.8 ± 4.3 years); nonfallers (n = 12, 68.9 ± 3.3 years)] and the control group (CG) [fallers (n = 12, 73.6 ± 5.4 years); nonfallers (n = 13, 68.7 ± 4.8 years)]. The CG maintained their lifestyle and the IG performed a videogame dance training three times per week for 12 weeks. The Dance Central game for Xbox 360 and Kinect motion sensor were used. The primary outcomes were geriatric depressive symptoms, fear of falling, and concentric and eccentric isokinetic peak torque (PT) of quadriceps and hamstrings. Secondary outcomes included cross-sectional area of quadriceps and hamstring muscles, functionality (Timed Up and Go test, gait speed, the Five Times Sit-to-Stand test), and a fall circumstances and outcomes recording. The depressive symptoms decreased in the Intervention Fallers Group. The eccentric hamstrings PT at 180°/s increased in the Intervention Nonfallers Group. There were no significant differences between groups for the other variables analyzed. The training attendance was 83% for the Intervention Fallers Group and 88% for the Intervention Nonfallers Group. Dance exergaming can be indicated to decrease depressive symptoms in fallers and increase the PT in nonfallers among community-dwelling older women.

Introduction: Musculoskeletal aging can impair functional performance increasing the risk of falls. Objective: To analyze the correlation between sarcopenia and the intrinsic and extrinsic factors involved in falls among community-dwelling elderly women. Method: A cross-sectional study evaluated the number of falls of 85 active community-dwelling elderly women in the previous year and then divided them into two groups: non-fallers (n=61) and fallers (n=24). The sarcopenia indicators assessed were gait speed (GS, 10m); handgrip strength (HS); calf circumference; appendicular muscle mass index (DXA). Intrinsic factors: Mental State Examination (MSE); visual acuity; depression (GDS-30); hip, knee (Lequesne) and ankle/foot (FAOS) pain/function; vestibular function (Fukuda test); functional mobility and risk of falls (TUG); power (sitting and standing five times); gait (treadmill); fear of falling (FES-I-Brazil). Extrinsic factors: risk/security features in homes. The independent t test was applied for comparisons between groups and the Pearson and Spearman tests were used for correlations (p<0.05). Results: There was a moderate correlation between HS and GS in non-fallers (r=0.47; p=0.001) and fallers (r= 0.54; p=0.03). There was a moderate negative correlation (r= -0.52; p=0.03) between FES-I-Brazil and gait cadence in fallers. There was a greater presence of stairs ( p=0.001) and throw rugs ( p=0.03) in the homes of fallers than non-fallers. Conclusion: The elderly women were not sarcopenic. Elderly fallers presented inferior gait cadence and a greater fear of falling. Residential risks were determining factors for falls, and were more relevant than intrinsic factors in the evaluation of falls among active community-dwelling elders.

Abstract-The study aimed to analyze the effect of two different durations of stretching exercises, 90 or 180 seconds, on the functional capacity (FC) of elderly women. Fortythree older women were assigned into three groups: inactive Control Group (CG, n. = 14), Training Group with three sets of 30 seconds (TG90, n. = 15) and Training Group with three sets of 60 seconds (TG180, n = 14). The TG90 and TG180 groups attended the university for 16 weeks, three times a week. The training protocol consisted of seven different static stretching exercises, performed in an active way. The CG attended the university only in periods of evaluations. Evaluations of the FC components and the Global Functional Fitness Index (GFFI), from the three groups, were both conducted before, and after 8 and 16 weeks of experiment, using a motor tests battery. The two-way ANOVA showed significant group x time interaction for the components flexibility, muscle strength and aerobic endurance, and for the GFFI values (p <0.05). The Scheffé post hoc test pointed difference between the two training groups and the CG, with no difference between TF90 and TG180. There was also improvement in the general classification of GFFI for the TG90 and TG180, which went from "fair" to "good", while CG remained classified as "fair. " It was concluded that the two durations of stretching exercises were equally effective in improving flexibility, muscle strength, aerobic endurance and levels of FC in elderly women. Evidências têm demonstrado que a manutenção de um estilo de vida fisicamente ativo pode atenuar as perdas associadas ao processo de envelhecimento. Dentre as práticas recomendadas para a população idosa, o treinamento com pesos (TP) tem recebido destaque, revelando benefícios na realização das atividades da vida diária e na qualidade de vida, entre outros. Assim, programas para pessoas idosas devem descrever suas experiências na tentativa de impulsionar e aperfeiçoar as atividades relacionadas com TP. Desta forma, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo descrever o funcionamento do TP, que é umas das modalidades do Programa de Atividade Física para a Terceira Idade (PROFIT). Atualmente, a modalidade TP conta com 45 participantes, sendo que 80% são mulheres e 20% homens. A maior parte dos participantes (84%) possui idade igual ou superior a 60 anos, ao passo que 16% possuem idade entre 54 e 59 anos. As aulas são ministradas três vezes por semana, em dias não consecutivos, com duração de 45 minutos. Os participantes realizam oito exercícios alternados por segmentos corporais, sendo realizadas três séries em cada exercício. Neste sentido, a modalidade TP busca proporcionar melhorias na qualidade de vida da população idosa, bem como auxiliar na formação de graduandos e pós-graduandos e, consequentemente, aprofundar o entendimento da atividade física em idosos.

RESUMO:Diversos estudos têm apresentado os benefícios físicos e psicossociais da prática regular de atividade física. Exercícios de alongamento, por serem de fácil aplicação e aprendizagem, tornam-se uma opção simples e efi caz na melhora da capacidade funcional e qualidade de vida de indivíduos idosos. Em 2009 foi criada uma atividade dentro do projeto de extensão Programa de Atividade Física para Terceira Idade (PROFIT), o Grupo de alongamento. Objetiva-se apresentar os aspectos organizacionais técnico/administrativos envolvidos na implementação de um grupo de alongamento em um projeto de extensão universitária e exemplifi car a aplicabilidade deste tipo de intervenção, em idosos. O grupo é voltado para mulheres, com 60 anos ou mais que não pratiquem atividade física sistematizada. Devido ao apoio fornecido pela universidade e a facilidade de compreensão e aplicabilidade dos exercícios realizados no grupo de alongamento, este surge como uma alternativa relativamente simples a ser implantada em um projeto de extensão universitária. Além disso, observou-se uma alteração positiva no Índice de aptidão funcional geral (IAFG) das idosas participantes. Dessa forma a implementação de outros grupos, em diferentes locais deve ser incentivada. Vale ressaltar que a participação multidisciplinar em saúde (fi sioterapeutas, terapeutas ocupacionais, psicólogos, etc) enriqueceria ainda mais os benefícios proporcionados por esse tipo de intervenção para indivíduos idosos.
