-Pesticide degradation studies are essential to evaluate its impact in the environment and on non-target organisms. The effect of repeated soil applications of the herbicide glyphosate on its dissipation and on soil microorganisms was studied by radiometric and microbial techniques. Results indicated fast dissipation of the [ 14 C]-glyphosate or [ 14 C]metabolites extractable residues (half-life of 0.92±0.29 month), but increasing half-lives of total mineralization ranging from 2.2 to 3.4 months as the number of applications increased from 1 to 4. No significant correlation was found between 14 CO 2 production and dehydrogenase activity.Index terms: pesticide residues, mineralization, dehydrogenases, soil treatment.
However, the behavior of this herbicide on the straw left on the soil surface of mechanically-harvested sugarcane areas is not very known. This work aimed to evaluate the dynamics of the herbicide metribuzin applied on different amounts of sugarcane straw under different rainfall periods and intensities after application. Three assays were carried out to evaluate the performance of metribuzin applied on sugarcane straw: in assay 1, herbicide interception was assessed by 0, 1, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 15, and 20 t ha -1 of straw; in assay 2, herbicide leaching through 5, 10, 15, and 20 t ha -1 of straw was evaluated under rain simulation equivalent to 2.5 up to 100 mm rain, one day after application (DAA); and in assay 3, the effect of the time intervals between herbicide application and the first rain on herbicide leaching (0, 1, 7, 14, and 28 days) on the straw (10 t ha -1 ) was evaluated under the same rainfall amounts simulated in the second study. The results obtained in assays 1 and 2 were adjusted by the Mitscherlich model. The herbicide was quantified by HPLC. The amount of metribuzin passing through the different amounts of straw with simula...
-A better method for determination of shikimate in plant tissues is needed to monitor exposure of plants to the herbicide glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] and to screen the plant kingdom for high levels of this valuable phytochemical precursor to the pharmaceutical oseltamivir. A simple, rapid, and efficient method using microwave-assisted extraction (MWAE) with water as the extraction solvent was developed for the determination of shikimic acid in plant tissues. High performance liquid chromatography was used for the separation of shikimic acid, and chromatographic data were acquired using photodiode array detection. This MWAE technique was successful in recovering shikimic acid from a series of fortified plant tissues at more than 90% efficiency with an interference-free chromatogram. This allowed the use of lower amounts of reagents and organic solvents, reducing the use of toxic and/or hazardous chemicals, as compared to currently used methodologies. The method was used to determine the level of endogenous shikimic acid in several species of Brachiaria and sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) and on B. decumbens and soybean (Glycine max) after treatment with glyphosate. The method was sensitive, rapid and reliable in all cases.
The soil oxidative and anaerobic processes, as well as, the microbial biomass were followed during three years in a cotton farm (Tatuí) where the recommended pesticides have been used for several years, and in an experimental field (São Paulo) treated first time with the same pesticides. The oxidative process was monitored by the dehydrogenase (DHA)-activity using triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) as substrate. The anaerobic process was followed by the iron-oxide reduction, and the microbial biomass was estimated by the substrate (glucose)-indiced respiration. Increases in DHA-activity and in the microbial biomass occurred only in the farm soil, with concomitant decreases in iron-reduction. In the experimental field soil, the increases in DHA-activity were followed only by decreases in iron-reduction. Soil characteristics were the determining factor for different biological parameters after pesticide inputs. All the pesticides produced at least one clear but transient effect.
TEBUTHIURON AND DIURON LEACHING IN SOIL COLUMNS Abstract A lysimeter study was developed to investigate the leaching of Tebuthiuron and Diuron in soil columns with different textures collected in a typical direct recharge area of the Guarani Aquifer, in Ribeirão Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The analytical method for determination of residues in water was high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after extraction by shaking the sample with diclhoromethane:isopropanol (9:1). The results showed that both herbicides leached faster in the Typic Quartzipsamment being Tebuthiuron more accentuated. This result suggests that the organic carbon content, besides the association between the low adsortive capacity of Tebuthiuron and its long persistence may be the responsibles by the difference. The studied herbicides may present contamination risk potential of the Espraiado watershed although reaching with difficulties the saturated zone of Guarani Aquifer situated right below the studied profile in this work. Tebuthiuron amount was larger than amount of Diuron in both cases, probably due to soil organic carbon content and large herbicide persistence. Further studies are necessary to investigate the leaching of herbicides in this region.
A study in small outdoor lysimeters was carried out to determine the leaching of the herbicides tebuthiuron and diuron in different soil types, using undisturbed soil columns. Soil sorption and degradation for both herbicides were also studied in the laboratory. The multi-layered AF (Attenuation Factor) model was evaluated for predicting the herbicides leaching in undisturbed soil columns. Tebuthiuron leached in greater amounts than diuron in both soils. Sorption was well represented by linear and Freundlich equations, however parameters from the linear equations were used in the AF model. In general, both herbicides presented very low sorption, with diuron presenting lower values of sorption coefficient than tebuthiuron in the two soils. Chromatographic data indicated rapid late degradation of diuron and tebuthiuron in both soil types at two different depths. Simple exponential equation was not able to represent degradation, thus a bi-exponential equation was used, and some model adjusting was needed. Average measured amounts of each herbicide were compared with amounts predicted by the multi-layered-soil AF model. The AF model was able to predict leaching amounts in the sandy soil, especially for diuron, however it did not perform well in the clayey soil.
