When looking at teaching and learning processes in mathematics education students with mathematical learning difficulties or disabilities are of great interest. To approach the question of how research can support practice, an important step is to clarify the group or groups of students that we are talking about. The following contribution firstly concentrates on the problem of labelling the group of students having mathematical difficulties as there does not exist a single definition. This problem might be put down to the different roots of mathematics education on the one hand and special education on the other hand. Research results with respect to concepts and models for instruction are multifaceted and related to specific content and mathematical topics as well as underlying views of mathematics. Taking into account inclusive education, a closer orientation to mathematical education can be identified and the potential of selected teaching and learning concepts can be illustrated. Beyond this, the role of the teacher and the corresponding teacher education programs are discussed.
This study examines the influence of social capital of the school and family on the development of human capital among youth. The authors examine how social capital allows students from low socioeconomic milieu to go beyond the difficulties associated with their origins. The data from the PISA 2000 survey of Canadian youth show that there is a significant association between the social capital of the school and the family and the students’ results in reading. The ANOVA analysis allowed the authors to note that, regardless of the socioeconomic origins, those students who obtained a result above the Canadian mean score are those who benefited from a school’s social capital that was considered to be high in regards to the use of available educational resources.
ABSTRACTStudy on school success in Québec: a historical-cultural analysis of a CRIRES research centre activity model (1987, 1999) is used as a frame of reference to analyze the Québec education system whose goal is success for the students. At the meta level, this analysis examines school success agents, such as intervention tools used in different contexts, as well as certain roles, standards and policies that go along with them. The analysis is proactive and shows intervention modes in the school and post-secondary milieus, agents of school success within the community (class, school, local community or society). What emerges is that 1) the 1992 definition for school success, to reach the learning objectives for each level, is a cultural artifact despite certain reserves that the CRIRES researchers periodically express on this subject, 2) the research axes orient the mediation of innovation by using a wide variety of instruments and the examination of their results in specific contexts, and 3) CRIRES is developing, in a more and more explicit way, its scope of research from a systemic point of view.
In this article, we examine primary teachers' interpretation of their pupils' productions in mathematics. We study the changes in teachers' interpretation as they were taking place during discussions on pupils' productions and the influence of the interpretation on the teachers' choice of intervention in class. Six seminars, betwen one researcher and 21 teachers from the same school, revealed the elements that contributed to the interpretative process. These elements allowed to describe five "milieux" to which teachers are sensitive as they interpret pupils productions. The results bring a better understanding of the origins of teachers' attribution of causes to pupils mistakes and of their preferred interventions with pupils who experience learning difficulties. The results suggest how changes in interpretation transform interventions and what conditions are necessary to initiate these changes.RÉSUMÉ.
