This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the increase in the number of degree courses in nursing and the nursing job market. It is a descriptive exploratory study with a quantitative approach, which used data on Undergraduate Nursing courses, supply of nurses, connection with health facilities, and formal jobs in nursing in the state of Minas Gerais. The evolution of Undergraduate Nursing courses reveals a supply and demand decline in recent years. Such context is determined by the nurse's labor market being influenced by the contradiction of a professional quantitative surplus, particularly in the state's less developed areas, as opposed to a low percentage of nurses to care for the population's health. These characteristics of the nursing labor market reproduce inequalities furthermore aspects such as the regulation of nursing education and the creation of new jobs need to be discussed further.
The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in the 2000s in the social base of the medical and nursing professions in Brazil, as a result of the expansion of higher education in the country beginning in the late 1990s. The article begins with a descriptive analysis of the social base of recruitment, drawing on data from the socioeconomic questionnaire of the National Student Performance Exam in 2004 and 2010, for incoming and graduating students in medicine and nursing. Next, it analyzes the social base of certified physicians and nurses, using data from the 2000 and 2010 Population Censuses. The results show that there was an expansion in the social base of recruitment in both professions, especially an increase in students from low-income families and those self-identified as black or brown. The social base of certified physicians and nurses underwent a reconfiguration, characterized by rejuvenation and a decrease in work market remuneration. The two processes were experienced differently within and between the professions, highlighting the existence of differences in the respective professional groups' capacity to mobilize resources proper to the professional world and that can guarantee special positions in the work market and in social structure.
Objectiveto analyze the migration of nurses in Brazil, describe the demographic characteristics of migrant nurses, the main migration flows, and establish relationships with the training process. Methoda descriptive, exploratory study, based on 2010 Census data. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Resultthere were 355,383 nurses in Brazil in 2010. Of these, 36,479 (10.3%) reported having moved compared to the year 2005: 18,073 (5.1%) for intrastate migration, 17,525 (4.8%) interstate migration, and 871 (0.2%) international migration. Females (86.3%), Caucasians (65.2%), and unmarried (48.3%) nurses prevailed in the population, without considerable variation between groups according to migration situation. The findings indicate that the migration flows are driven by the training process for states that concentrate a greater number of courses and positions in undergraduate and graduate studies, and the motivation of employment opportunity in regions of economic expansion in the country. Conclusionit is necessary to deepen the discussion on the movement of nurses in Brazil, their motivations, and international migration.
Background In Brazil, the number of physical therapy education programs and, consequently, of professionals has been growing for the past 20 years. Objectives The objective of the study was to describe the evolution and distribution of physical therapist education programs in Brazil and to analyze the impact of workforce growth on the labor market for these professionals. Design This was a descriptive, exploratory, quantitative study. Methods Secondary data collected from official sources in Brazil were used. Results The first physical therapist education program was created in 1958, and, after significant growth, 536 programs were active in 2014. The historical series (1996–2014) shows a corresponding increase in the number of admissions by higher educational institutions. This expansion resulted in an increase in the number of professionals, with an impact on the labor market. The workforce in physical therapy is predominantly female, and women increased their participation in this labor market from 59% in 1996 to 81% in 2014. An increase in nominal monthly salaries was observed over the years from US $797.00 in 1996 to US $1056.00 in 2014. Nevertheless, the real average salaries, that is, salaries adjusted to inflation, have followed a trend of devaluation. Limitations Results of this study must be interpreted in terms of overall trends rather than as precise absolute numbers due to the inherent nature of the varied secondary data sources. Conclusions These data can support further discussion on training and the labor market in the field of physical therapy.
