This is a qualitative study aiming to analyze the healthcare model for children with chronic conditions in Primary Health Care. The study subjects were nurses, nurse technicians and auxiliary nurses working in 16 basic health units in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and later analyzed from the critical perspective, seeking to identify the common themes in the empirical material. Data revealed how primary health care professionals identified and reached children with chronic conditions, as well as how they presented the care actions performed. However, the development of a model of care for children with chronic conditions in primary health that considers their specific health needs constitutes a challenge.
ABSTRACT:The aim of this qualitative study was to analyze family participation in care delivery to newborns in daily practice at a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The study was carried out at five hospitals in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The study subjects were healthcare professionals taking care of newborns hospitalized at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the relatives of these infants. Data were collected through participant observation and daily conversations and analyzed using Content Analysis. The data permitted capturing aspects of family participation in newborn care related to institutional organization, interaction with healthcare professionals and the care process. Different actions favoring mothers' participation in care delivery to their children were identified at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Objective: to understand the implications for nursing care of children discharged from the neonatal intensive care with chronic conditions. Methods: a qualitative study of 14 mothers of children with chronic conditions. Individual interviews and Inventory of Pediatric Evaluation of Disability were conducted. Data submitted to thematic content analysis. Results: it was found that chronic conditions have determined the need for continuous care, varied complexity and more often than usual for children at home, in the community and network services. There were situations experienced by mothers in the care of daily life that should be considered by nurses in practice. Conclusion: the specific needs of these children require greater integration and training of nurses for the health education of caregivers, the shared home care and management in primary care, in order to facilitate the adaptation and family welfare, aimed at providing continuity of care.
The repeated painful experiences in newborns may have short- and long-time effects, especially in premature infants. The use of sweetened solutions during painful procedures has been recommended as a measure of pain relief. This study aims to evaluate the evidence of the effect of oral sucrose or glucose for acute pain relief in premature infants. An integrative review was conducted in the MEDLINE and LILACS databases. Eight articles were selected from 2005 to 2010. The analyzis of these articles revealed the analgesic effect of glucose and sucrose in acute procedures. No significant side effects were found in infants who received glucose/sucrose. We emphasize the importance of the use of the pain assessment scale most closely related to the predominant population in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a scale easy to be used and handled by health professionals.
The Systematization of Nursing Care (in Portuguese, SAE) allows quality improvement in the care provided by the nursing staff. However, its implementation is still incipient in health services. The objective of this study was to evaluate the SAE implementation process in a pediatrics unit of a university hospital. It was a case study with a quantitative approach. Data was collected from SAE forms and questionnaires completed by the nursing staff. The results revealed that the SAE implementation process faces difficulties, such as the nurses' heavy workload, the nursing technicians' lack of knowledge on the subject, and the low involvement of the health workers in the process. The implementation was further impaired by the inadequacies of the institutional forms, associated to their improper completion, and to lack of coordination between phases of the nursing process. The nursing technicians' inclusion in the execution of the SAE stages needs to be encouraged. Moreover the results demonstrated that the curriculum of technical courses should offer training on nursing processes and SAE, as well as addressing the technicians' competency. In conclusion, the SAE implementation process should take place in a context of participatory management; it should consider organizational aspec...
Objective: to identify aspects that contribute to the discontinuation of outpatient follow-up of newborns from Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) from the perspective of mothers. Method: exploratory, qualitative study, whose theoretical framework was Symbolic Interactionism. Fifteen mothers of children with NICU who discontinued outpatient follow-up in Belo Horizonte-MG were included in a semi-structured interview. Data were analyzed based on the proposal of Hsieh and Shannon. Results: distance from the health service, absence of family support, difficulty in leaving work, maternal health status, organization of the health service itself and deficiency of public transportation were predisposing factors for outpatient abandonment. Mothers understand that their children do not need differentiated care of children at usual risk. Conclusion: service organization, socioeconomic status of the family and social support perceived by mothers were related with the lack of compliance with outpatient follow-up.
