The aim of this paper was to analyze energy-related properties of forestry and agricultural wastes for energy production purposes, and to compare them with fossil fuels. The forestry wastes used were red cedar, Eucalyptus, and Pinus wood shavings. The agricultural wastes analyzed were rice husk, coffee wastes, sugar cane bagasse, maize harvesting wastes, and bamboo cellulose pulp. The forestry wastes presented more suitable properties for bioenergy production than the agricultural wastes. Desirable energetic properties were found for coffee wastes. The opposite was verified for rice husks. Among the biomass studied, coffee wastes presented the highest equivalent in fossil fuel volume and hence may lead to the highest decrease in CO 2 emissions by fossil fuels used in Brazil for steam and heat production. The results suggests that CO 2 benefits can be obtained if bioenergy is generated in the same locale where biomass is produced, avoiding CO 2 cost of logistics and leading to greater end-use efficiency. The present work promotes the widespread use of different lignocellulosic wastes for bioenergy production and gives useful information for the planning and the control of power plants using biomass.

Esta pesquisa foi desenvolvida com o objetivo de avaliar a viabilidade de utilização da madeira de Eucalyptus maculata, E. grandis e E. tereticornis, na forma de resíduos de processamento em serrarias, para produção de painéis de madeira aglomerada. Foram produzidos 24 painéis, para um total de oito tratamentos definidos em função de três espécies e mistura proporcional destas e dois níveis de resina (8 e 12%). Os painéis foram produzidos com densidade nominal de 0,75.cm-3 e de acordo com o seguinte ciclo de prensagem: temperatura de prensagem = 140° C, tempo de prensagem = 8 min e pressão específica = 40 kg.cm-2. As seguintes propriedades físico-mecânicas dos painéis foram analisadas: absorção de água (AA-2 e 24 h), inchamento em espessura (IE-2 e 24 h), ligação interna (LI), módulo de elasticidade (MOE) e módulo de ruptura (MOR) em flexão estática. Os resultados dos ensaios indicaram que os painéis produzidos com a madeira destas espécies de eucalipto apresentam propriedades físico-mecânicas satisfatórias, em comparação com algumas espécies referenciais como Pinus elliottii, Mimosa scabrella e Eucalyptus dunnii mencionadas na literatura. Os painéis produzidos com 12% de resina apresentaram melhores resultados que os painéis com 8%. Com base nas propriedades mecânicas o Eucalyptus maculata e o Eucalyptus grandis foram as espécies que apresentaram melhor comportamento para produção de painéis de madeira aglomerada.

Agricultural residues are materials generated in large quantities in Brazil and can accumulate to such extent as to cause environmental problems. Among agricultural residues, maize cob is one worthy of notice, and an alternative use for maize cob would be to produce particleboard panels in association with wood particles. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using maize cob for production of particleboard panels. The following maize cob percentages were used: 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, in association with particles of Pinus oocarpa wood. Panels were made with 8% of urea formaldehyde and 1% of paraffin (based on dry weight of particles). For compressing the panels, a pressure of 3.92 MPa was applied at a temperature of 160° C, for 8 minutes. Increased replacement of pinewood by maize cob residue promoted significant improvements to the properties water absorption after two hours of immersion, thickness swelling after two and after twenty-four hours of immersion. Mechanical properties had a decreasing correlation with the maize cob percentage being incorporated.Index terms: Environmental problems, reuse, physicomechanical properties, agricultural residues. RESUMOOs resíduos agrícolas são materiais gerados em grande quantidade no Brasil, podendo se acumular no ambiente, gerando graves problemas. Um desses resíduos que merecem destaque é o sabugo de milho. Uma das alternativas para o reaproveitamento do sabugo seria a produção de painéis aglomerados em mistura com madeira. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, avaliar a viabilidade da utilização do sabugo de milho para a produção de painéis aglomerados. As porcentagens de sabugo de milho utilizadas foram de 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% e 100% associadas com partículas de madeira de Pinus oocarpa. Os painéis foram produzidos com 8% de uréia-formaldeído e 1% de parafina (base massa seca de partículas). Na prensagem dos painéis, foi utilizada pressão de 3,92 MPa e temperatura de 160º C por um período de 8 minutos. O aumento da substituição da madeira de pinus pelo resíduo sabugo de milho promoveu melhoras significativas para as propriedades de absorção de água, após duas horas e inchamento em espessura, após duas e vinte e quatro horas. As propriedades mecânicas apresentam relação decrescente com a porcentagem de incorporação de sabugo de milho. The wood panel industry is constantly growing, being necessary the innovation in technologies and raw materials to improve the quality of the final product. Considering the shortage and pressure to decrease the dependence of wood, there is an interest in other renewable materials such as agricultural wastes. Among these wastes, coffee parchment is one which deserves notoriety. An alternative use for coffee parchment could be for production of particleboard in association with wood particles. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using coffee parchment for production of particleboard. The following percentages of wastes were used: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% in association to eucalyptus wood. The panels were produced with 8% of urea formaldehyde (based on dry weight of particles). The pressing cycle consisted by: pre-pressing of 0.5 MPa for 10 minutes followed by pressing of 4.0 MPa, and temperature of 160° C for 15 minutes. The compaction ratio of particleboards produced using higher quantities of parchment improved the physical properties. The properties of Water Absorption (2 and 24 h) and Thickness Swelling (2 h) decreased with increasing percentage of coffee parchment. The Thickness Swelling (24 h) showed not significant effect with an increase of coffee waste. The Modulus of Elasticity for coffee parchment particleboards was in the range 646.49 ± 112.65 to 402.03 ± 66.24 MPa, while the Modulus of Rupture ranged from 8.18 ± 1.39 to 4.45 ± 0.75 MPa. The results showed that 10% of coffee parchment could be added for production of particleboards.Index terms: Agricultural waste; lignocellulosic material; renewable material. RESUMOA indústria de painéis de madeira vem em constante crescimento, sendo necessária a inovação em tecnologias e matéria-prima para melhorar a qualidade do produto final. Considerando a escassez e pressão na diminuição da dependência por madeira, existe um interesse em outros materiais renováveis, como os resíduos agrícolas. Entre esses resíduos, o pergaminho de café merece destaque. Uma alternativa para utilização do pergaminho de café poderia ser na produção de particulados, em associação com partículas de madeira. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade de utilização do pergaminho de café para produção de aglomerados. As porcentagens de resíduo utilizadas foram: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 e 50% em associação com madeira de eucalipto. Os painéis foram produzidos com 8% de uréia-formaldeído (base massa seca de partículas). O ciclo de prensagem consistiu de: pré-prensagem de 0,5 MPa por 10 minutos, seguido por prensagem de 4,0 MPa e temperatura de 160° C por 15 minutos. A razão de compactação dos painéis produzidos com maiores quantidades de pergaminho melhorou as propriedades físicas. The expansion of Brazilian agricultural production was very important in the last decade. A number of waste residues were produced showing an enormous potential for industrial crops and products. Sugarcane bagasse is the most important one and it has been investigated for chipboard panel's preparation. In this sense, this work aims to develop, characterize and compare chipboard panels made with sugarcane bagasse with urea formaldehyde (UF) and melamine formaldehyde (MF) resins. Panels were obtained with a mixture of sugarcane bagasse and particles, like pine or eucalyptus, with and without paraffin in the formulation. Nine different types of panels have been made, all with 9% in resin mix, under a pressing cycle of 4.0 MPa cm 2 , and temperature of 160 • C. Under physical tests, the panels complied with the American Standard CS 236-66 for trading chipboards of medium density and, in most cases the results obtained were lower than the ones raised in the literature. Under mechanical tests, that same standard was not complied with and, in most cases the results were close to or higher than those obtained in the literature.

RESUMOEste trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da associação de bagaço de cana, tipo e teor de adesivo nas propriedades físico-mecânicas de painéis aglomerados com madeira de Pinus spp. O delineamento experimental se constituiu de um esquema fatorial 3x2x3, sendo três porcentagens de substituição de madeira de pinus por bagaço de cana -25, 50 e 75%; dois tipos de adesivos -fenol-formaldeído (FF) e ureia-formaldeído (UF); e três teores de adesivo -6, 9 e 12%. O ciclo de prensagem utilizado foi de pressão de 40 kgf/cm², temperatura de 160ºC para UF e de 180ºC para FF, e por um tempo de 8 minutos. Mediante os resultados pode-se concluir que: 1) Para a porcentagem de associação de bagaço de cana, nas propriedades em que foi observado efeito significativo, a tendência foi de diminuição da qualidade dos painéis à medida que se aumenta a quantidade de associação de bagaço de cana; 2) O adesivo UF se mostrou estatisticamente igual ou superior a FF em todas as propriedades avaliadas; 3) Os teores de adesivo apresentaram efeito significativo para todas as propriedades analisadas, sendo que, com exceção da propriedade ligação interna, em todas as outras propriedades o teor de 12% foi estatisticamente superior a 6%, e ainda igual ou superior a 9%. ABSTRACTThis study aimed to evaluate the association effect of sugar cane bagasse, type and levels of adhesive in the physical-mechanical properties of particleboards with Pinus spp. wood. The experimental design consisted of a 3x2x3 factorial scheme, with three percentages of substitution pine wood by sugar cane bagasse -25, 50 and 75%; two types of adhesives -phenol-formaldehyde (PF) and urea-formaldehyde (UF); and three levels of adhesive -6, 9 and 12%. The cycle of pressing used was 40kgf/cm² pressure, temperature of 160ºC for UF and 180ºC for PF, and for a time of 8 minutes. From the results, it is concluded that: 1) For the percentage of sugar cane bagasse association, in the properties where significant effect was observed, the trend was decrease in panel quality as the amount of sugar cane bagasse increases; 2) The UF adhesive was statistically equal or greater than PF in all evaluated properties; 3) The levels of adhesive showed significant effects for all properties; Except for internal bond property, in all other properties the level of 12% was statistically superior to 6%, and equal or greater than 9%.
