Agricultural residues are materials generated in large quantities in Brazil and can accumulate to such extent as to cause environmental problems. Among agricultural residues, maize cob is one worthy of notice, and an alternative use for maize cob would be to produce particleboard panels in association with wood particles. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using maize cob for production of particleboard panels. The following maize cob percentages were used: 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, in association with particles of Pinus oocarpa wood. Panels were made with 8% of urea formaldehyde and 1% of paraffin (based on dry weight of particles). For compressing the panels, a pressure of 3.92 MPa was applied at a temperature of 160° C, for 8 minutes. Increased replacement of pinewood by maize cob residue promoted significant improvements to the properties water absorption after two hours of immersion, thickness swelling after two and after twenty-four hours of immersion. Mechanical properties had a decreasing correlation with the maize cob percentage being incorporated.Index terms: Environmental problems, reuse, physicomechanical properties, agricultural residues. The wood panel industry is constantly growing, being necessary the innovation in technologies and raw materials to improve the quality of the final product. Considering the shortage and pressure to decrease the dependence of wood, there is an interest in other renewable materials such as agricultural wastes. Among these wastes, coffee parchment is one which deserves notoriety. An alternative use for coffee parchment could be for production of particleboard in association with wood particles. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using coffee parchment for production of particleboard. The following percentages of wastes were used: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% in association to eucalyptus wood. The panels were produced with 8% of urea formaldehyde (based on dry weight of particles). The pressing cycle consisted by: pre-pressing of 0.5 MPa for 10 minutes followed by pressing of 4.0 MPa, and temperature of 160° C for 15 minutes. The compaction ratio of particleboards produced using higher quantities of parchment improved the physical properties. The properties of Water Absorption (2 and 24 h) and Thickness Swelling (2 h) decreased with increasing percentage of coffee parchment. The Thickness Swelling (24 h) showed not significant effect with an increase of coffee waste. The Modulus of Elasticity for coffee parchment particleboards was in the range 646.49 ± 112.65 to 402.03 ± 66.24 MPa, while the Modulus of Rupture ranged from 8.18 ± 1.39 to 4.45 ± 0.75 MPa. The results showed that 10% of coffee parchment could be added for production of particleboards.Index terms: Agricultural waste; lignocellulosic material; renewable material.
The briquettes were carbonized at a heating rate of 1.67 ºC min -1 with initial temperature of 50 ºC and final of 450 ºC, which was kept during 30 min. The torrefaction of the briquettes was made in a muffle furnace at two heating rates: 1.5 and 3.0 ºC min -1 until 250 ºC, temperature kept during 60 min. The yields in torrefied and carbonized briquettes, pyroligneous liquor, non-condensable gases and fixed carbon were determined. For all briquettes the fixed carbon, ash, volatile and elemental components (C, H, N, S, O) contents and higher heating value, apparent and energetic density and resistance to diametric compression were quantified. The carbonized briquette presented high energetic potential due to higher fixed and elemental carbon content and heating value, but had low mechanical resistance. The briquettes torrified at the two considered heating rates presented similar energetic properties and characteristics, but lower energetic density than carbonized and fresh briquettes.
ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the incorporation of Coffee husks in the production of particleboard with Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake. The panels were produced incorporating 25%, 50%, and 75% of Coffee husks at three levels of resin phenol-formaldehyde (6, 9 and 12%) and 1% of paraffin. The nominal density of the panels was 0.7 g/cm³ and the cycle of pressing consisted in a pressure of 3.92 MPa under a temperature of 180°C for 8 minutes. By the results it was possible to observe that the physical properties of the particleboard have a linear relationship decreasing with the increase in the level of resin, and increasing with the increase in the percentage of coffee husks, showing higher values of water absorption and thickness swelling. The mechanical properties show a linear relationship growing with the increase of resin level, and decreasing with a reduction the percentage of coffee husk association. The way that the search was conducted, the incorporation of the Coffee husks harms the quality of the panels produced.
The use of biomass has been recognized as a potential renewable energy and an alternative substitute that contributes to the decrease of fossil fuels consumption. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the thermal behavior of briquettes made of residues from coffee grain processing in different conditions: in natura, torrefied and carbonized. Eucalyptus sawdust was used for comparison. The briquettes were carbonized considering final temperature of 450° C (kept for 30 min). The briquettes torrefaction was performed in an electric oven (muffle) using two heating rates until 250° C (kept 60 min). The thermal-gravimetric analysis was made in nitrogen atmosphere until the temperature of 600° C. The contents of fixed carbon and volatile matter of the fuels were determined. The carbonized briquette of residues from coffee grain processing presented higher stability and low thermal decomposition. It was observed a low influence of torrefaction heating rate under thermal properties of briquettes, and fixed carbon and volatile matter content. Regarding the raw biomass, lower total mass loss was observed for the residues from coffee grain processing when compared to Eucalyptus sawdust. The carbonized and torrefied briquettes presented higher hydrophobicity than raw briquettes.
