Currently, there is a lack of studies on the correct utilization of continuous distributions for dry tropical forests. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the diameter structure of a brazilian tropical dry forest and to select suitable continuous distributions by means of statistic tools for the stand and the main species. Two subsets were randomly selected from 40 plots. Diameter at base height was obtained. The following functions were tested: log-normal; gamma; Weibull 2P and Burr. The best fits were selected by Akaike's information validation criterion. Overall, the diameter distribution of the dry tropical forest was better described by negative exponential curves and positive skewness. The forest studied showed diameter distributions with decreasing probability for larger trees. This behavior was observed for both the main species and the stand. The generalization of the function fitted for the main species show that the development of individual models is needed. The Burr function showed good flexibility to describe the diameter structure of the stand and the behavior of Mimosa ophthalmocentra and Bauhinia cheilantha species. For Poincianella bracteosa, Aspidosperma pyrifolium and Myracrodum urundeuva better fitting was obtained with the log-normal function.
Dry tropical forests are a key component in the global carbon cycle and their biomass estimates depend almost exclusively of fitted equations for multi-species or individual species data. Therefore, a systematic evaluation of statistical models through validation of estimates of aboveground biomass stocks is justifiable. In this study was analyzed the capacity of generic and specific equations obtained from different locations in Mexico and Brazil, to estimate aboveground biomass at multi-species levels and for four different species. Generic equations developed in Mexico and Brazil performed better in estimating tree biomass for multi-species data. For Poincianella bracteosa and Mimosa ophthalmocentra, only the Sampaio and Silva (2005) generic equation was the most recommended. These equations indicate lower tendency and lower bias, and biomass estimates for these equations are similar. For the species Mimosa tenuiflora, Aspidosperma pyrifolium and for the genus Croton the specific regional equations are more recommended, although the generic equation of Sampaio and Silva (2005) is not discarded for biomass estimates. Models considering gender, families, successional groups, climatic variables and wood specific gravity should be adjusted, tested and the resulting equations should be validated at both local and regional levels as well as on the scales of tropics with dry forest dominance.
Palavras-chave: qualidade do solo, manejo do solo, vegetação nativa Physical attributes of soil under different uses with irrigation in semiarid Pernambuco ABSTRACT Soils in semiarid climate regions had been degraded by salinization, reducing their productive capacity. This work aimed to evaluate physical attributes of soil in an irrigated perimeter in the semiarid Northeast of Brazil and to compare different soil uses using these attributes. The study was carried out at Icó-Mandantes Irrigated Perimeter, between Petrolândia and Floresta, in semiarid region of Pernambuco, in which the populations were separated by their uses in annual crops (C), fruticulture (F), discarded lands (D), pasture (P), native vegetation (V). Undisturbed and disturbed soil samples were collected, in layers of 0-10, 10-30 and 30-60 cm, for physical analysis. The indicators were submitted to multivariate analysis, by Principal Component Analysis, and clustering by the Tocher method. The agricultural use promoted alterations in the physical attributes of soil in relation to soil under native vegetation. The soil quality for the physical attributes varied between the layers of 0-10 and 10-30 cm, except in use V, sohich presented similar quality in these layers. F and P uses had presented better physical soil quality than C use in the layers of 0-10 and 10-30 cm and D use presented the worst soil quality in the evaluated layers.
Palavras-chave: distribuição diamétrica, quociente de De Liocourt, floresta ombrófila Diametric structure of a fragment of Atlantic Rain Forest in sugarcane plantation, ABSTRACTThis work aimed to analyze the diametric structure of arboreous component in an Atlantic Rain Forest fragment using De Liocourt quotient "q". The study was carried out at the Atlantic Rain Forest fragment, called Mata das Caldeiras, in Catende municipality, Pernambuco State, Brazil. The sampled individuals were distributed in class diameters with amplitude of 5 cm, with the first class having a value of 6.5 cm. Using the quotient "q" of De Liocourt the curves of diametric distribution, observed and estimated, were constructed, for the whole fragment and for species of higher Importance Value (VI). The fragment Mata das Caldeiras showed a deficit of trees in the diameter classes, generally and for species of greater VI, compared with a balanced forest. The De Liocourt quotient "q" may be used to evaluate diametric structure in fragments of Atlantic Forest. By the diametric distribution and obtained values of "q", for the period of succession found in the areas, it can be inferred that the degree of disturbance in these fragments occurs in a consistant manner.
Palavras-chave: comunidade arbórea, distribuição diamétrica, estrutura comunitária Structure of a forest fragment at Humaitá sugar mill, Catende, PE, Brazil ABSTRACTThe structure of a forest fragment, known as "Mata das Galinhas" at Humaitá sugar mill, Catende, Pernambuco, Brazil was evaluated. Palavras-chave: composto urbano, fixação de nitrogênio, leguminosas forrageiras, leguminosas arbóreas, medidas repetidas Evaluation of the growth in height of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit., in 'Agreste' of Pernambuco AB S TR ACTThe main goal of this work was to evaluate the growth in height of the leucena Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) of Wit. The seedlings' plantation was at the Experimental Station of the Agricultural Research Institute of Pernambuco -IPA -located in Caruaru, semi-arid region of Pernambuco, using 576 seedling of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) of Wit (cv, Hawaii k8), divided in 24 treatments with 24 replications. The sources of variation studied were: phosphate fertilizer, organic matter from urban composto and rhizobial strains (NFB 466 and 473) applied as a mixed inoculant. In the experiment the analysis of Repeated Measures with nineteen measures was used along the time. The best results were obtained in the treatments with organic matter from urban composto however, starting from the fourteenth measurement (571 days after the beginning of the experiment), significant differences among the treatments were observed. Through the 8 years of evaluation, it may be concluded that in the first four years, the leucaena showed best growth results reaching 80% of the maximum size. In the last four years the same trees grew only 20%, to reach their maximum heights.
