Celem artykułu jest próba analizy etymologicznej wybranych nazw wodnych, przedewszystkim rzecznych, powiązanych etymologicznie z praindoeuropejskim rdzeniem*h2engh-/*h2gh- ‘krzywić, kręcić, wić się’ wraz z podobnymi fonetycznie i semantycznieinnymi rdzeniami, które zostały utrwalone w apelatywach i nazwach rzek na obszarzegermańskim, bałtyckim i słowiańskim. Mogły one powstawać w okresie przemieszczaniasię słabo jeszcze zróżnicowanych językowo praindoeuropejskich grup etnicznych. Przedstawiononajbardziej prawdopodobne etymologie nazw rzek takich jak: Angerbach, Angelbach,Unkenbach, Węgorapa, Wągra, Wiar itp. na szerszym tle apelatywnym i proprialnym.Wykazano, że w sferze apelatywnej rdzeń *h2engh- i rdzenie podobne, np. *h2enk- ‘krzywy,wygięty’, *eng- ‘unikać, omijać, uchylać się, wykręcać się’ znajdują poświadczenia takżew wyrazach pospolitych na terenach, gdzie używano języków słowiańskich, bałtyckichi germańskich, a także w grece i innych językach indoeuropejskich. W artykule przyjętometodologie wypracowane w ramach strukturalizmu, wychodząc z założeń przyjętychna gruncie niemieckim, że stare nazwy wodne nie należą do żadnego ze współczesnychjęzyków indoeuropejskich, zostały utworzone przed rozwojem historycznych językówpoświadczonych na danym obszarze w pierwszym tysiącleciu n.e.
Przegłos pralechicki *ęT > *'ǫT jak w kaszubskim v'ǫzc, v'ąze w opozycji do prawidłowo nieprzegłoszonych form v'izc, v'ize nie dokonał się w części zachowanego słowiańskiego nazewnictwa na południowym obszarze Pomorza Zachodniego: sięgając klinem od obszaru na południe od Szczecina po Darłowo na Pomorzu Środkowym, np. Kotentowe (Chociętowo), Diosintablotta : *desęt- 'dziesięć'. Na tym obszarze zauważa się też brak przegłosu *ŕ̥T > r̥T, np. Czirnowe : czarny, Dirloua (Darłowo). Brak przegłosu mógł być wywołany jakimiś wczesnymi kontaktami ze słowiańską ludnością grupy łużyckiej, w której przegłos pralechicki *ęT > *'ǫT nie występował.
W artykule przeanalizowano zakresy procesu afrykatyzacji *t', *d' > *ć, *ȝ' na Pomorzu Zachodnim. Stwierdzono jego stopniowe zanikanie w kierunku zachodnim – większe dla dawnego palatalnego *d', mniejsze dla dawnego palatalnego *t'. W dawnych słowiańskich dialektach Pomorza Zachodniego, jak też w dawnych słowiańskich gwarach Meklemburgii, Wschodniego Holsztynu czy w gwarze Drzewian Połabskich takiej afrykatyzacji w większości zapisów nazw miejscowych i terenowych brak, tzn. *t' > t, *d' > d. Świadczyć to może o zaniku wymowy akomodacyjnej w tych dialektach. Brak wymowy akomodacyjnej przed samogłoskami rzędu przedniego typologicznie zbliża te gwary do gwar i języków: górnołużyckiego, czeskiego i słowackiego oraz języków południowosłowiańskich. Po części podobna jest też do stwardnienia spółgłosek przed *e, *ě, *i w języku ukraińskim.
W zapisach dawnych słowiańskich nazw miejscowych i terenowych Pomorza Zachodniego afrykatyzację *r' > ř, rz itp. obserwujemy na terenach sąsiadujących z gwarami kaszubsko-słowińskimi na wschód od rzeki Słupia oraz, rzadko, wzdłuż południowo-wschodniej granicy Pomorza. Na terenie niemieckiego Pomorza Przedniego, Meklemburgii i w dawnych słowiańskich gwarach Połabia afrykatyzacja *r' nie nastąpiła. Świadczy to o dawnym zróżnicowaniu dialektów lechickich na zachodnie, bez akomodacji *r' (a także częściowo bez zmian *t', *d' przed samogłoskami rzędu przedniego) oraz wschodnie, które cechowała afrykatyzacja *r' > ř, rz, š/ž (oraz *t' > ć, *d' > ȝ́ ). Brak akomodacji spowodowany był tendencją do utrzymania silniejszej wymowy sonantów. Rezultatem było częściowe stwardnienie systemu konsonantycznego, ograniczenie przegłosu pralechickiego, zachowanie bez metatezy grupy *tărt (typ karva 'krowa'), zlanie kontynuantów *l̥' i *l̥ > oł (typ vołk 'wilk'), zachowanie/zwokalizowanie w zanikłym dialekcie połabskim dawnych jerów słabych (typ blåxă 'pchła'). Stwierdzono liczne analogie do współczesnych gwar bułgarskich i macedońskich.
