In this work, chitosan (CS)/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers were prepared by using the electrospinning method. Different CS concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, and 3 wt %), maintaining the PVA concentration at 8 wt %, were tested. Likewise, the studied electrospinning experimental parameters were: syringe/collector distance, solution flow and voltage. Subsequently, the electrospun fibers were collected on a reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) support for 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 h. The morphology and diameter of the CS/PVA nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), finding diameters in the order of 132 and 212 nm; the best results (uniform fibers) were obtained from the solution with 2 wt % of chitosan and a voltage, distance, and flow rate of 16 kV, 20 cm, and 0.13 mL/h, respectively. Afterwards, a treatment with an ethanolic NaOH solution was performed, observing a change in the fiber morphology and a diameter decrease (117 ± 9 nm).

The design of polymer electrolyte membranes for fuel cells must satisfy two equally important fundamental principles: optimization of the reactivity and the selectivity in order to improve the ion transport properties of the membrane as well as its long-term stability in the hydrated state at high temperature (above 100 °C). A study utilizing density functional theory (DFT) to elucidate the effect of the degree of sulfonation on the chemical stability, reactivity, and selectivity of poly(ether imide) (PEI), which allows the ionic transport properties of the membrane to be predicted, is reported here. Sulfonated poly(ether imide) (SPEI) structures with (-SO3H) n (n = 1-6) groups were built and optimized in order to calculate the above properties as functions of the number of sulfonyl groups. A comparative study demonstrated that the SPEI with four sulfonyl groups in its backbone is the polymer with the properties best suited for use in fuel cells.

The performance of novel chitosan-poly(vinyl alcohol) gel beads was evaluated removing lead, cadmium and chromium from mining-influenced groundwater (MIGW) under hydrodynamic conditions employing column sorption experiments. To elicit the efficiency of the synthesized materials, the sorbent bed height within the packed column and volumetric flow were varied; the column configuration was changed using packed and fluidized arrangements. The fluidized bed configuration presented higher sorption efficiency for Pb, Cd and Cr ions than the fixed bed configuration: 78%, 52% and 62% against 60%, 35% and 37%. The packed bed data were processed using the Clark, Dose-Response, Yoon-Nelson and Woldborska models. The best fitting was obtained with the Dose-Response model. The experimental output confirmed the effective reduction of the harmful metals in MIGW at a very short breakthrough time from 3 to 15 min, which is strategic due to the global effects on both human health and environment.

The CO2 absorption process using aqueous solutions of lysine (Lys), the ionic liquid (IL) tetrabutyl phosphonium lysinate ([TBP][Lys]) and their mixtures was studied by means of a packed tower. The performance of these systems was evaluated through the volumetric overall mass transfer coefficient ( K G a V ) , conducting experiments under diverse conditions such as inlet CO2 concentration from 10 to 40 vol.%, gas and absorbent flow rates from 100 to 200 mL/min and from 3 to 5 mL/min, respectively, absorbent concentration from 5 to 15 wt.% and temperature from 15 to 40 °C. The obtained results for all the previous experimental conditions were better for the IL/Lys mixture than for the isolated components; the best performance was shown by the experiment varying the absorbent concentration, where the increasing K G a V was benefited by the IL/Lys synergistic effect.
