The problem of simultaneously enhancing sensitivity and noise immunity of microcantilevers is investigated. The dependence of deflection and resonant frequency of a microcantilever on its dimensions is studied. A principle to increase deflection and resonant frequency simultaneously is established. Several cantilevers agreeing with this principle are investigated using analytical models and are compared with FEM simulations. Using these results, a cantilever profile that achieves a larger deflection and a larger resonant frequency compared with uniform cantilevers is proposed to be used in sensor elements.

Temperature data collected heightened observations of sample temperature variability. Prevalence of bar-code label read failure and issues affecting reliability of barcode performance may be under-reported and unrecognized in sample management practice, particularly when the temperatures are lower than -60°C. It appears the bluechiip(®) tracking technology may offer increased reliability over one-dimensional (1D) bar-coding technology; however while promising these findings require validation in future trials, including two-dimensional (2D) bar-coding technologies.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness affecting millions of people worldwide. Regular monitoring of intra ocular pressure (IOP) in the eyes is an important component in the treatment of this affliction. Current manual measurements do not give room for continuous indication of the progression of the disease. Microelectromechanical System (MEMS) technology lends itself to the development of devices capable of in-situ monitoring of the phenomenon that occur at the micro and nano scales, inside the human body. The paper reports on the complex flow and pressure relationships in the eye and the current methods of monitoring Glaucoma. The comparison highlights the requirements of an implantable miniature device that can indicate the changes leading to an increase of IOP inside the eye. An analysis of the pressures in the anterior chamber of the eye was undertaken to estimate the out put voltages that could be obtained from a micro structure implanted in the eye.
