Este artigo baseia-se em um estudo que teve como objetivo analisar as imagens que despertam maior interesse e maior número de compartilhamentos por parte dos internautas a partir do dispositivo em rede Instagram sobre a epidemia de Zika. O recorte temporal abrange novembro e dezembro de 2015, ou seja, os dois meses posteriores à revelação por pesquisadores e autoridades médicas de que a infecção pelo vírus Zika poderia estar associada a casos de microcefalia diagnosticados em recém-nascidos. No estudo, recorremos ao ImageCloud, um aplicativo desenvolvido pelo Laboratório de Estudos sobre Imagem e Cibercultura, da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo e que permite visualizar uma grande quantidade de imagens em bases de dados, como, por exemplo, nas redes sociais. A análise foi encaminhada a partir dos pressupostos teóricos da análise do discurso.
A circulação de boatos virtuais marcou a epidemia de zika e microcefalia de 2015/2016. A partir da análise dos comentários de posts das páginas do Diário de Pernambuco e da Folha de S. Paulo no Facebook, visamos compreender melhor o fenômeno, identificando discursos mobilizados nesses espaços intertextuais e polifônicos. Os resultados evidenciam um ambiente de incerteza associado ao desconhecimento científico, à crise política e à reflexividade em relação aos riscos da ciência. Também apontam questões não respondidas que estimularam a circulação dos boatos: Por que a epidemia se concentrou em Pernambuco? Por que nunca ocorreu na África? Por que não aconteceu antes? Concluímos que o enfraquecimento do estatuto de verdade da ciência e da própria verdade, mais fluida, participa do protaganismo do boato na atualidade midiatizada.
O artigo examina aspectos discursivos e políticos do medo em sua singularidade histórica, a partir da exposição do sofrimento de estranhos no espaço público. A relação entre cultura e sofrimento privilegia quatro tópicos: i) a transformação do sofrimento em questão política na cultura ocidental; ii) a seleção dos estados e condições considerados para uma dada época histórica como sofrimentos relevantes e evitáveis através da ação política; iii) atribuição de responsabilidade pelo sofrimento de estranhos e, iv) o modo de endereçar a audiência. A base empírica reúne matérias de jornais e telejornais sobre crimes, catástrofes e epidemias, produzidas a partir de 1980, e permite refletir sobre as repercussões éticas da política do medo contemporânea, conceituada como política da vítima virtual.
