Bras. 32(9):824-830, setembro 2012 824 RESUMO.-Objetivou-se realizar um estudo retrospectivo dos principais achados epidemiológicos, clínicos, patoló-gicos e laboratoriais de ovinos acometidos por urolitíase obstrutiva, atendidos na Clínica de Bovinos, Campus Gara- The aim was to conduct a retrospective study of the main epidemiological, clinical, pathological and laboratory ϐindings from sheep suffering from obstructive urolithiasis, in the Agreste region of Pernambuco, Brazil. Thus, 66 medical records of non-castrated male sheep with age from 2 months and 5 years were analyzed. Most cases (79.63%) occurred during the rainy season. Most sheep were raised intensively (87.88%) and all were fed with concentrated ration. Main clinical signs were manifestation of pain, congestion of the mucosae, hyperthermia, and increased abdominal tension associated with urinary tract obstruction. Half of the animals showed total obstruction of the urethra, 69.7% of which died, whilst in cases of partial obstruction only 30.3% died. Laboratorial exams revealed neutrophilia and regenerative left turn, hyperϐibrinogenemia, and azotemia. Urinalysis showed hematuria in 89.29% of the cases, and acidic pH in 46.43%. Erythrocytes, leukocytes, cell desquamation of urethral epithelium, and crystals of amorphous urate predominated in the examination of the sediment. Most frequent gross ϐindings were pyelonephritis (61.54% of cases) and hydronephrosis (50%). In the ureter, ureteritis and hydroureter was observed. The bladder showed diffuse hemorrhagic cystitis (50%) and uroliths (57.69%). In the urethra, uroliths (61.54%) and diffuse hemorrhagic urethritis (57.69%) was found. The uroliths were composed mainly by hydrated calcium oxalate. It is concluded that in the Agreste region of Pernambuco, urolithiasis is an important disease of sheep with high mortality, associated with the ingestion of large amounts of concentrates and mineral supplements.

Samples of water and barnacles Amphibalanus amphitrite were collected from Recife, Brazil, to assess if it accumulates total (TC) and thermotolerant coliforms (TTC) related with sewage pollution. The Most Probable Number (MPN) values and the standard procedures for examination of shellfish were used. Comparatively with the water samples, the highest coliform values came from the barnacles, with TC values ranging from < 3.0 × 10 3 to ≥ 2.4 × 10 6 MPN.g -1 , and TTC ranging from ≥ 2.4 × 10 3 to 2.9 × 10 5 MPN.g -1 . Barnacles accumulate the TC Ewingella americana, and the TTC Escherichia coli, Enterobacter gergoviae, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Enterobacter sakazakii. The results provided an indication of the level of organic contamination at the sampling locations and that this species could be a good organic pollution bioindicator.Keywords: barnacle, bioaccumulation, bioindicator, estuary, organic pollution. Concern with antimicrobial resistance in animal production systems increases the interest toward integrative therapies. The objective of the present report was to report an integrative approach to a goat undergoing rumenotomy. A goat with ruminal acidosis underwent rumenotomy, corrective rumen suture, moxibustion, and treatment of the surgical wound (TFO) with sugar. In the first twenty days, acupuncture was performed on ST36, indirect moxibustion on Sp6 and CV8, and TFO with antibiotic ointment and sugar. The wound contracted 2cm, there was gradual return of ruminal dynamics, and moderate pain. Acupuncture continued from D21 to D50 on Yin tang, BL13, BL20, BL23, and BL22. Although there was drainage of ruminal fluid, the wound contracted 4cm during this period, pain was absent, and ruminal dynamics normal. During the last thirty days, the acupuncture technique surround the dragon was used and BL13 point needled, with complete closure of the wound. The TFO from D21 was performed solely with sugar. During treatment, there was modulation of the inflammatory response, with formation of granulation tissue and neovascularization. On D84, fibrinogen was 100mg/dL. The authors conclude that the use of sugar, acupuncture, and moxibustion contributed to return of normal ruminal motility, wound contraction, and complete tissue reepithelization.

ResumoObjetivou-se registrar a ocorrência e descrever os achados clínicos e hematológicos de surtos de tripanossomíase em bovinos em propriedades localizadas nos municípios de Timbaúba e Paudalho, Zona da Mata do estado de Pernambuco. Foram realizadas visitas às propriedades para coleta de dados sobre o histórico do rebanho além de informações sobre o manejo dos animais na propriedade, realização de exame clínico e coleta de material para hemograma, pesquisa de hematozoários e Reação em Cadeira da Polimerase. Clinicamente, os animais apresentavam mucosas hipocoradas, emaciação, havendo histórico de óbito em ambas as propriedades. Previamente ao manejo da ordenha era feita a aplicação de ocitocina, sendo ainda observada a presença de moscas hematófagas. Ao hemograma observou-se presença de anemia normocítica normocrômica e leucocitose por neutrofilia na maioria dos animais. Foi observada presença do protozoário Trypanosoma vivax no esfregaço sanguíneo e confirmados na PCR. Recomendou-se o tratamento com diaceturato de diminazene (10,5 mg/kg) em administração única. Conclui-se que o T. vivax, ocorre na região nordeste de maneira esporádica e que o manejo sanitário deficiente predispõe a ocorrência da enfermidade nos rebanhos.Palavras-Chave: hemoparasitoses; sinais clínicos; animais de produção. AbstractThe objective was to record the occurrence and describe the clinical and hematological findings of outbreaks of trypanosomiasis in cattle on properties located in Timbaúba and Paudalho in the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco. Visits to the properties were carried out to collect data on of the herd as well as information on the management of animals on the farm, clinical examination and collection of blood samples, searching for parasites in the blood, and Polymerase Chain Reaction. Clinically, the animals had pale mucosae, emaciation, and there was a history of death in both properties. Prior to milking, oxytocin was applied and biting flies were also observed. The hemogram showed normocytic normochromic anemia and leukocytosis due to neutrophilia in most animals. Presence of Trypanosoma vivax was observed in the blood smear and confirmed with the PCR. Treatment with dimethiazine diaceturate (10.5 mg/kg) in a single dose was recommended. In conclusion, T. vivax occurs in the northeast region sporadically and poor sanitary management predisposes the occurrence of disease in the herds.
