We tested 644 serum samples from 480 grizzly bears and 40 black bears from Alaska (USA), collected between 1988 and 1991, for Toxoplasma gondli antibodies, using a commercially available latex agglutination test (LAT). A titer 64 was considered positive. Serum antibody prevalence for T. gondii in grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) was 18% (87 of 480). Prevalence ranged from 9% (seven of 77) on Kodiak Island to 28% (15 of 54) in northern Alaska. Prevalence was directly correlated to age. No grizzly bears <2-year-old had T. gondli antibody. High antibody titers were found mainly in grizzly bears captured north of the Arctic Circle. Antibody prevalence in black bears (Ursus americanus) from Interior Alaska was 15% (six of 40), similar to the prevalence in grizzly bears from the same area (13%; five of 40).

Between September 2001 and March 2013, 62 bacterial cultures (37 aerobic and 25 anaerobic) were performed on 37 blood samples from 23 Antillean manatees ( Trichechus manatus manatus) that were kept in captivity at the Brazilian National Center for Research and Conservation of Aquatic Mammals (CMA) in Pernambuco (CMA-PE) and Alagoas (CMA-AL), Brazil. All of the animals sampled exhibited clinical signs at the time of sampling including abscesses (n = 8), debilitation and anorexia (n = 22), and profound lethargy-moribundity (n = 7). The 4 animals with profound lethargy-moribundity died shortly after sampling of unknown causes. Bacteria were isolated from 15/37 (40.5%) and aerobic blood cultures from 13/23 animals (56.5%). None of the anaerobic cultures were positive. Aeromonas caviae , Aeromonas hydrophila , Aeromonas sp., Escherichia coli , Leclercia adecarboxylata , Pantoea agglomerans , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Pseudomonas stutzeri , Pseudomonas sp., Sphingomonas paucimobilis , coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis were each found in only one animal; Staphylococcus spp. was found in two; and Vibrio fluvialis in four. Thirteen samples had only one bacteria isolated, one sample had two bacteria, and one sample had three bacteria isolated. Regarding sex, age group, and origin among the manatees examined, 54.5% (6/11) of the females, 58.3% (7/12) of the males, 40% (2/5) of the calves, 66.7% (8/12) of the juveniles, 50% (3/6) of the adults, 55.5% (10/18) at CMA-PE, and 60% (3/5) at CMA-AL were found to be positive for bacterial growth during at least one sampling time. All Antillean manatees were clinically ill. Regarding clinical signs, bacteria were found in 50% (11/22) of blood samples of the animals showing debilitation and anorexia, 1 of 8 (12.5%) of blood samples of the animals showing abscesses, and 3 of 7 (42.9%) of blood samples of the animals showing profound lethargy-moribundity.

It was concluded that of all ten tested brands, at least one sample of each brand was improper for consumption, for not meeting the parameters established by legislation in at least two tests; the Most Probable Number (MPN) for Pseudomonas spp. and P. aeruginosa was influenced by seasonality and the count of heterotrophic bacteria; the Most Probable Number (MPN) of coliform and thermotolerants and research of Aeromonas spp. suffered no significant influence of seasonality.

Samples of water and barnacles Amphibalanus amphitrite were collected from Recife, Brazil, to assess if it accumulates total (TC) and thermotolerant coliforms (TTC) related with sewage pollution. The Most Probable Number (MPN) values and the standard procedures for examination of shellfish were used. Comparatively with the water samples, the highest coliform values came from the barnacles, with TC values ranging from < 3.0 × 10 3 to ≥ 2.4 × 10 6 MPN.g -1 , and TTC ranging from ≥ 2.4 × 10 3 to 2.9 × 10 5 MPN.g -1 . Barnacles accumulate the TC Ewingella americana, and the TTC Escherichia coli, Enterobacter gergoviae, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Enterobacter sakazakii. RESUMOAs lesões coronarianas já foram relatadas em espécies de peixes anádromos, com características semelhantes às observadas em aterosclerose humana, mas não em peixes cultivados sem interferência de padrões reprodutivos. Objetivou-se descrever lesões coronarianas em beijupirá (Rachycentron canadum) criado em sistema offshore, em 54 exemplares coletados ao longo do cultivo de oito meses. Amostras de tecido cardíaco de alevinos e juvenis foram submetidas à análise histopatológica e à microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET), para visualização de lesões coronarianas, sendo as lâminas histológicas coradas pela técnica de hematoxilina-eosina, ácido periódico de Schiff, alcian blue e reticulina de Gomori. Exames realizados pela fotomicroscopia de luz evidenciaram lesões arteriais caracterizadas por hiperplasia das túnicas íntima e média de artérias coronárias em, respectivamente, 29,63% e 79,63% dos animais, com redução do lúmen arterial. Na MET, foram observadas alterações na estrutura das coronárias com espessamento do endotélio e membrana basal, proliferação de fibroblastos e fibras colágenas, com acúmulo de material lipídico subendotelial, resíduos celulares aderidos à membrana basal e vesículas pinocitóticas com presença de lisossomos isolados. The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in the Paraíba River, Brazil. Eight sampling sites were established on the bank of the river near water intake areas for the farming of Litopenaeus vannamei. Ten specimens of the shrimp Palaemon pandaliformis and the gastropods Pomacea lineata and Melanoides tuberculatus were collected at each site. Eighty-one gill fragments from P. pandaliformis, 40 whole individuals of M. tuberculatus and 26 muscle fragments from P. lineata were collected. All samples were stored in microcentrifuge tubes with 95% ethanol (1:10; v:v). Tests were performed at the Potiporã Molecular Analysis Laboratory (state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil) for the detection of WSSV using Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification with the aid of the LAMP WSSV kit (Concepto Azul, Ecuador). Twenty-nine per cent of P. pandaliformis, 48% of M. tuberculatus and 8% of P. lineata tested positive. The findings demonstrate that WSSV is present in wild crustaceans and mollusks, which may serve as vectors and/or reservoirs of the virus, thereby posing a potential risk to local shrimp farming. RESUMO Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a intercorrência entre leucose enzoótica e tuberculose em rebanhos bovinos leiteiros em oito municípios do Estado de Pernambuco, pelo estabelecimento da prevalência de bovinos reagentes às provas diagnósticas específicas. Foram analisados sorologicamente 662 animais, pela técnica de imunodifusão dupla em gel de agarose e 612 foram avaliados imunoalergicamente, por meio do teste de tuberculinização. Nos 15 rebanhos examinados, as prevalências de bovinos que apresentaram positividade aos testes IDGA e tuberculina foram 32,2% (213/662) e 14,1% (86/612), respectivamente. Os resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa permitiram concluir que as doenças estudadas encontram-se amplamente disseminadas na população avaliada, com crescimento em níveis significativos da leucose, e as infecções pelo vírus da leucose bovina (VLB) e Mycobacterium bovis encontram-se ativas e em expansão, com risco do comprometimento da saúde dos rebanhos bovinos e, pelo caráter zoonótico da tuberculose bovina, das pessoas que lidam com os bovinos.
