The stress of operational missions may challenge the maintenance of body homeostasis, affecting soldiers' cardiac autonomic control, promoting dehydration, and compromising performance. Therefore, we aimed to determine the effects of peacekeeper patrol operation in Haiti on soldiers' hydration status and cardiac autonomic modulation, and to determine whether fluctuations in autonomic modulation were associated with changes in hydration status, energy expenditure (EE), and aerobic fitness (V[Combining Dot Above]O2max). A group of 20 soldiers (23.5 ± 4.7 years; V[Combining Dot Above]O2max 52.9 ± 4.5 ml·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹) completed an operational patrol mission with a mean duration of 160.6 ± 28.6 minutes. Before (Pre) and after (Post) the operation, the soldiers' body masses (BMs) were measured and 5-minute heart rate interbeat (R-R) intervals were recorded at rest to estimate heart rate variability (low-frequency [LF] and high-frequency [HF] power, and sympathovagal balance [LF/HF]). During the mission, EE was estimated using heart rate (HR) monitors. Changes from Pre to Post in BM (%BM loss) and LF/HF (ΔLF/HF) were used to evaluate the soldiers' dehydration levels and autonomic modulation, respectively. The mean EE was 711.0 ± 208.7 kcal. From pre to post, increases (p< 0.01) were noted in LF normalized units (n.u.) and LF/HF and decreases (p < 0.01) were noted in BM, R-R interval, and HF n.u. The variation in ΔLF/HF correlated with EE (r = 0.49; p = 0.02), V[Combining Dot Above]O2max (r = -0.42; p = 0.05), and %BM loss (r = 0.53; p = 0.02). The results demonstrated that an operational peacekeeper patrol with an approximate duration of 160 minutes promoted both dehydration and an imbalance in the autonomic modulation of soldiers' HR. The reduction in sympathovagal balance correlated with EE, dehydration, and aerobic conditioning.
Palavras-chave: imagem corporal, saúde do homem, militares Drive for Muscularity: An Exploratory Study in the Brazilian ArmyABSTRACT -Drive for muscularity refers to the desire to achieve an ideal muscular body, as well the degree of concern about increasing muscle mass. The aim of this research was to investigate drive for muscularity traits in men from the Brazilian army. Data from a non-probabilistic sample of 652 men were analyzed. Results showed associations among drive for muscularity variables and habits of physical exercise practice, life and body satisfaction, and social physique anxiety. Differences in drive for muscularity traits were also found accordingly with the romantic status, financial security and time career in the army. It was concluded that monitoring the drive for muscularity during military education should be part of the psychosocial care routines.
Effects of Military Physical Training on anthropometric characteristics and physical performance in military personnelIntroduction: Physical fitness is one of the fundamental elements for Brazilian military personnel. However, studies indicate the existence of a high prevalence of overweight and obesity in this population. Objective: To verify the impact of Military Physical Training (MPT) on the anthropometric profile and military physical performance indices. Methods: A longitudinal study was carried out. 27 male students from the Basic Period of the Training Course for Sergeants (TCS) of the Brazilian Army participated. Anthropometric evaluations were performed: body mass, height, skin folds (pectoral, abdominal and mid-thigh) and physical performance: flexion of the arm in the ground and fixed bar, 12-minute run and abdominal supra, exercises that are part of the Physical Fitness (PF) held three times a year in the various military organizations of the Army. The evaluations were applied in two phases: one in the third and the other in the twenty-first week of education. The normality of the data was examined by the Shapiro-Wilk test. To compare pre-and post-training period data, Student’s t and Wilcoxon tests for paired samples were used. Results: The anthropometric characteristics, as well as the abdominal test above, did not present alterations, whereas the physical tests presented significant statistical improvement in the tests of arm flexion in the ground and in the fixed bar and in the race (Cooper's 12-minute test). Conclusion: MPT proved to be efficient for physical preparation for combat. Nonetheless, military organizations should adopt policies to emphasize and encourage healthier eating behaviors.
Following the increase in the employment of women in conflicts around the world, the federal government of Brazil enacted a law which determines the participation of women in the military. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of six months of physical training (PT) on the physical fitness of young Brazilian Army cadets to carry out the physical assessments provided in military training. Sixty-eight members of the (19.4 ± 1.0 years) military from the Brazilian Army (BA), with BMI of (23.61 ± 2.17/21.81 ± 2.26) respectively and divided in two groups (men/women) participated in the study. PT was conducted by Manual EB20-MC10.350. Anthropometric measurements and assessment of body composition by dual X-ray absorptiometry were performed. The Student’s t test, percentage evolution equation, and Levene test were used. Results showeda significant increase in anthropometric variables and cardiorespiratory fitness in both groups. Bone health variables and visceral fat presented a significant increase in the malegroup. In terms of muscle fitness (handgrip and isometric strength of the legs and push-up and pull-up), there was no significant variation between thegroups. Percentage evolution was greater in female group. The conclusion shows PT was able to cause beneficial changes, promoting positive improvement in bone health, especially in women. Also, PT was shown to enhance cardiorespiratory capacity, and muscle fitness of the upper limbs in all participants.
