Objective:To determine the audiological and clinical results of cochlear implantation in children below the age of 12 years old with congenital and acquired singlesided deafness.Design: Observational, descriptive, transversal study. Main outcome measures: Speech reception thresholds, Cortical responses, AuditoryLateralization Test and SSQ questionnaire.Participants: Children < 12 implanted for congenital or acquired SSD.Results: All the children with congenital SSD showed positive cortical responses.Positive results were obtained in the Auditory Lateralization Test for the following modalities: 0°, 45°and 90°.With respect to the Speech Test, the children with acquired SSD showed the following results: 92% and 100% in recognition and 48% and 68% (Azimuth modalities), Signal CI side 52% and 68% and Signal normal hearing side 44% -60% (p < 0.05).In both group the processor was used for 6-12 hours.With respect to the SSQ questionnaire results, the parents were more satisfied within the post-operative period than within the pre-operative period (P<0.001). Conclusions:Cochlear implant provides children with congenital SSD with significant audiological and subjective benefits. Children with congenital SSD and implanted after a longer period may not have an important benefit (binaural) although other bilateral effects can be achieved. Children with post-lingual unilateral deafness and after a short period of hearing deprivation probably integrated the normal acoustic hearing with the cochlear implant electrical signal and showed binaural benefits.

We observed a high rate of culture positivity for A. otitidis in patients with clinical OME without suppuration. Further studies are needed to confirm whether the association of A. otitidis with OME represents causality. Antibiotic therapy aimed at A. otitidis is complicated by reported resistance, thus emphasizing the importance of our understanding of the pathogenetic role played by this organism

Objective: To investigate the rate of colorectal neoplasms (CRNs) in patients who have Enterococcus faecalis infective endocarditis (EFIE) with available colonoscopies and to assess whether this is associated with the identification of a focus the infection. Patients and Methods: Retrospective analysis of data from a prospective multicenter study involving 35 centers who are members of the Grupo de Apoyo para el Manejo de la Endocarditis en España [Support Group for the Management of Infective Endocarditis in Spain] cohort. A specific set of queries regarding information on colonoscopy and histopathology of colorectal diseases was sent to each participating center. Four-hundred sixty-seven patients with EFIE were included from January 1, 2008, to December 31, 2017, from whom data on colonoscopy performance and results were available in 411 patients. Results: One hundred forty-two (34.5%) patients had a colonoscopy close to the EFIE episode. The overall rate of colorectal diseases was 70.4% (100 of 142), whereas the prevalence of CRN (advanced adenomas and colorectal carcinoma) was 14.8% (21 of 142), with no significant differences between the group of EFIE of unknown focus and that with an identified focus. Conclusion:Our study adds to prior evidence suggesting a much higher rate of CRN among patients with EFIE than in the general population of the same age and sex. In addition, our findings suggest that this phenomenon might take place both in EFIE with an unknown and an identified source of infection.

Introduction: Mural infective endocarditis (MIE) is a rare type of endovascular infection. We present a comprehensive series of patients with mural endocarditis. Methods: Patients with infectious endocarditis (IE) from 35 Spanish hospitals were prospectively included in the GAMES registry between 2008 and 2017. MIEs were compared to non-MIEs. We also performed a literature search for cases of MIE published between 1979 and 2019 and compared them to the GAMEs series. Results: Twenty-seven MIEs out of 3676 IEs were included. When compared to valvular IE (VIE) or device-associated IE (DIE), patients with MIE were younger (median age 59 years, p \ 0.01). Se caracterizó la resistencia antimicrobiana de 70 aislados de Escherichia coli obtenidos de pacientes con infección del tracto urinario (ITU) provenientes de ocho hospitales públicos en el Perú. Los perfiles de resistencia fueron identificados mediante el uso del sistema automatizado MicroScan®. Se utilizó una reacción en cadena de la polimerasa convencional para la detección de los genes blaTEM, blaCTX-M, blaSHV y blaPER. El 65,7% (46/70) de los aislados presentó un fenotipo multidrogorresistente y el 55,7% (39/70) fue identificado como productores de betalactamasas de espectro extendido. Se detectaron altos niveles de resistencia para ampicilina (77,1%), ciprofloxacina (74,3%), trimetoprim/sulfametoxazol (62,9%), cefepime (57,1%) y cefuroxima (57,1%). El gen blaTEM fue el más frecuente con un 31,4%, seguido por blaCTX-M (18,6%) y blaSHV (2,9%). Los resultados evidencian altos niveles de resistencia a antimicrobianos de importancia clínica en aislados de E. coli de pacientes con ITU en el Perú.
