By analysis of the information it reveals in relation to its structure and the chronological systems it employs, this paper concludes that the Chronica latina regum Castellae was written in at least three stages between 1223 and 1237. Some such process of composition by stages would also account for the lexical and stylistic differences evident between parts of the Chronica as well as for the variable treatment accorded to certain key figures. However, it is clear both from the Chronica’s ideology and from such compositional features as its use of liturgical chronology and its deployment of biblical quotations that the Chronica had a single author throughout, while the strength of the resemblance between the description of events mentioned in chancery documents and that of their presentation in the Chronica makes the case for identifying that author with Juan de Soria, chancellor of Fernando III, ever the more cogent. Circumstantial evidence suggests that the Chronica may have been written from memory, either the author’s or someone’s else’s, rather than from textual compilations, as was the case with the works of Lucas de Tuy and Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada
