It is commonly assumed that judgments of dominance from faces partly rely on implicit judgments of bodily strength. In two studies, we demonstrate such a relation for both computer-generated and natural photos of male faces. We find support when aggregating data across participants, when analyzing with hierarchical models, and also when strength and dominance are judged by different raters. Moreover, we identify common predictors that underlie perceptions of both strength and dominance: brow height, eye length, chin length, and the widths of the nose and mouth.

We investigate both similarities and differences between dominance and strength judgments using a data-driven approach. First, we created statistical face shape models of judgments of both dominance and physical strength. The resulting faces representing dominance and strength were highly similar, and participants were at chance in discriminating faces generated by the two models. Second, although the models are highly correlated, it is possible to create a model that captures their differences. This model generates faces that vary from dominant-yet-physically weak to nondominant-yet-physically strong. Participants were able to identify the difference in strength between the physically strong-yet-nondominant faces and the physically weak-yet-dominant faces. However, this was not the case for identifying dominance. These results suggest that representations of social dominance and physical strength are highly similar, and that strength is used as a cue for dominance more than dominance is used as a cue for strength.

A estrutura bidimensional das teorias implícitas de personalidade (Rosenberg, Nelson, & Vivekananthan, 1968) é revisitada em dois estudos. O primeiro estudo procurou obter as duas dimensões originais (social e intelectual), replicando o trabalho de Rosenberg e colaboradores. Para o efeito, traços de personalidade utilizados no estudo original foram traduzidos para português. No segundo estudo utilizaram-se traços espontaneamente gerados por uma amostra de participantes portugueses. Assim, o primeiro estudo avalia o impacto de 40 anos de mudanças culturais nas dimensões identificadas originalmente e o segundo procura ampliar a validade da proposta teórica original. A análise de dados recorrendo ao Escalonamento Multidimensional e à Análise de Clusters confirma a actualidade e importância da teoria implícita bidimensional embora sugerindo algumas mudanças no conteúdo das dimensões avaliativas. This work builds on the enfacement effect. This effect occurs when experiencing a rhythmic stimulation on one’s cheek while seeing someone else’s face being touched in a synchronous way. This typically leads to cognitive and social-cognitive effects similar to self-other merging. In two studies, we demonstrate that this multisensory stimulation can change the evaluation of the other’s face. In the first study, participants judged the stranger’s face and similar faces as being more trustworthy after synchrony, but not after asynchrony. Synchrony interacted with the order of the stroking; hence trustworthiness only changed when the synchronous stimulation occurred before the asynchronous one. In the second study, a synchronous stimulation caused participants to remember the stranger’s face as more trustworthy, but again only when the synchronous stimulation came before the asynchronous one. The results of both studies show that order of stroking creates a context in which multisensory synchrony can affect the trustworthiness of faces.
