Enhanced utilization of ecological processes for food and feed production as part of the notion of ecological intensification starts from location-specific knowledge of production constraints. A diagnostic systems approach which combined socialeconomic and production ecological methods at farm and field level was developed and applied to diagnose extent and causes of the perceived low productivity of maize-based smallholder systems in two communities of the Costa Chica in South West Mexico. Socialeconomic and production ecological surveys were applied and complemented with model-based calculations. The results demonstrated that current nutrient management of crops has promoted nutrition imbalances, resulting in K-and, less surprisingly N-limited production conditions, reflected in low yields of the major crops maize and roselle and low resource use efficiencies. Production on moderate to steep slopes was estimated to result in considerable losses of soil and organic matter. Poor crop production, lack of specific animal fodder production systems and strong dependence on animal grazing within communal areas limited recycling of nutrients through manure. In combination with low prices for the roselle cash crop, farmers are caught in a vicious cycle of cash shortage and resource decline. The production ecological findings complemented farmers opinions by providing more insight in background and extent of livelihood constraints. Changing fertilizer subsidies and rethinking animal fodder production as well as use of communal lands requires targeting both formal and informal governance structures. The methodology has broader applicability in smallholder systems in view of its low demand on capital intensive resources.
AbstractThe changes introduced by modernization and globalization in traditional societies have altered sociotechnical practices and ways of living in community. However, some rural societies have resisted under different modalities in the face of modernizing processes and changes in the environment, considering that they value and conserve their cultural and organizational expressions that allow them to survive. Some of the main sociotechnical practices, such as heritage inheritance related to food safety, found in field work during 2011-2012 and its benefits are highlighted. It is concluded that several practices are still rooted in the culture and identity of the Mixteca Alta of Oaxaca, such as: cooperative work (gueza-work), food loaning (gueza-food), barter, traditional agriculture, and harvesting of wild plants. The widespread permanence between communities and families of diverse sociotechnical practices are conformed as local strategies that strengthen food security, which need to be respected, promoted and rescued by programs and institutions of different government levels.
The objective of this research was to analyze and compare the use of pesticides in Mexican horticulture, taking into account: the current Mexican regulation established by the Ministries of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Feeding (SAGARPA), Environment, Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), and Health (SSA); the generalized recommendations according to different institutions linked to agricultural sector; farmers' organizations and companies; in correlation with the production and management practices of the farmers. It must also be considered that an important number of farmers have a limited knowledge of the regulations and lack training in the proper management of conventional and alternative products. Justification is based on the insufficient correspondence between the existing regulations and the emerging problems, registered in later years. Given its geographic location and its diversity of climates, Mexico has the conditions for growing a great diversity of crops, and thus its agricultural activity is very dynamic. According to data from the INEGI (2007), the agricultural area of the country was 30,2 million hectares, of which 13,9 million were used for annual crops, 8,8 million for perennial crops, and 7,5 million hectares were not cultivated. Among the agricultural activities, vegetable crop production is one of the most dynamic, due to their short cycle (1 to 5 months), which allows obtaining several harvests per year, and a great combination of them, or maintaining the same crop all year long. Some regions of the country have specialized on the production of certain vegetable crops, such as broccoli in Guanajuato, tomato in Sinaloa, chili pepper in Chihuahua, among others. This has allowed destining their products to the domestic as well as the international market. Albert (2005) mentions that in the northeast and central zones
