EORTC criteria and PERCIST 1.0 are more sensitive and accurate than RECIST 1.1 for the detection of an early therapeutic response to chemotherapy in patients with NSCLC. Although EORTC criteria and PERCIST 1.0 showed similar results, PERCIST 1.0 is preferred because detailed and unambiguous definitions are given. We also found that response evaluations with PERCIST 1.0 using a single lesion and multiple lesions gave similar response classifications.

Few studies have shown comparison data between calcaneus stiffness index (SI) calculated by quantitative ultrasound (QUS) and bone mineral density (BMD) measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in the Chinese population. This study was aimed to examine the correlations between calcaneus SI calculated by QUS and total body BMD and bone mineral content (BMC) measured by DXA in Chinese children and adolescents. We measured the total body BMD and BMC using Lunar Prodigy (GE Healthcare), and speed of sound (SOS), broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), and a calculated SI of the left os calcis using Lunar Achilles Express (GE Healthcare) in 392 healthy Chinese schoolchildren and adolescents aged 5-19 years. The short-term precision for DXA was 0.5 % for total body BMD. The precision for QUS was 1.8 % for SI, 2.9 % for BUA, and 0.4 % for SOS. Pearson's correlation coefficients (r) were calculated to assess the possible correlations between the total body BMC by DXA and SI calculated by QUS. There were significantly positive correlations between SI of the left os calcis and total body BMD (r = 0.693, p < 0.001, n = 392) and BMC (r = 0.690, p < 0.001, n = 392). For all the subjects, significant positive correlations were observed between the calcaneal SI and the age, weight, height, BMI, total body BMD, total body BMC, total body lean mass, and total body fat mass, with r ranging from 0.310 (total body fat mass) to 0.693 (total body BMD) (p < 0.001, n = 392). In conclusion, QUS bone densitometry is a useful measuring method showing the physiological bone development in childhood and adolescence.

With an aging society, osteoporosis is one of the most common diseases threatening the health of China's elderly population and is an issue that is raising increasing concern. Osteoporosis is characterized by bone loss and increased susceptibility to fragility fractures. Various imaging modalities such as X-ray, CT, MRI and nuclear medicine along with assessment of bone mineral density (BMD) play an important role in its diagnosis and management, and the treatment requires multidisciplinary teamwork. A lack of consensus in the approach to imaging and BMD measurement is hampering the quality of service and patient care in China. Therefore a panel of Chinese experts from the fields of radiology, orthopedics, endocrinology and nuclear medicine reviewed the international guidelines, consensus and literature with the most recent data from China and, taking account of current clinical practice in China, the panel reached this consensus to help guide the diagnosis of osteoporosis using imaging and BMD. This consensus report provides guidelines and standards for the imaging and BMD assessment of osteoporosis and criteria for the diagnosis of osteoporosis in China.

This study aimed to analyze the relationships between the lean mass index (LMI) and bone outcomes in Chinese children and adolescents using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and to establish sex-specific reference percentile curves for the assessment of muscle status. A total of 1541 Chinese children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 19 years were recruited from southern China. Body composition was measured by DXA (Lunar Prodigy) to acquire total body and total body less head (TBLH) measures. LMI was calculated as the LM (kg) divided by the height in meters squared. Strong sex gaps were observed after age 14 in total body LMI and appendicular LMI (p < 0.001). LM and LMI values continued to increase for boys up to age 14 compared to girls who plateaued after age 12. For each sex group, total body bone mineral content (BMC) and TBLH BMC were highly correlated with total body LMI and appendicular LMI (r = 0.856-0.916 in boys, and r = 0.651-0.804 in girls, p < 0.001). The appendicular LMI was more strongly associated with total body BMC and TBLH BMC than was total body LMI. The correlations between the BMC values and the LM measures were stronger than the fat mass results. We also present sex-specific percentile curves for LM-age and LMI-age relationships, which could be useful for identifying the LM deficits in this population.

PurposeThe aims of the study were to develop sex- and age-specific percentiles for lean mass index (LMI), appendicular LMI (aLMI), fat mass index (FMI), and body fat distribution indices in Chinese adults using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and to compare those indices with those of other ethnicities using the US NHANES data.MethodsWhole-body and regional lean mass and fat mass (FM) were measured using DXA in 5688 healthy males (n = 1693) and females (n = 3995) aged 20–90 years. Body fat distribution indices were expressed as % fat trunk/% fat legs, trunk/appendicular FM ratio (FMR), and android/gynoid FMR. Percentile curves of LMI, aLMI, FMI, and body fat distribution indices were obtained by the Lambda–Mu–Sigma method.ResultsThe aLMI and LMI were negatively associated with age, decreasing from the fifth decade for males, but were not associated with age in females. Females had more total FM than males, whereas males had greater central adiposity (% fat trunk/% fat legs ratio, trunk/appendicular FMR, and android/gynoid FMR) than females. Moreover, FMI and body fat distribution indices consistently increased with age in both sexes, especially in women. In comparison with white, black, and Mexican populations in the USA, Chinese adults had lower total FM, but had greater central adiposity (% fat trunk/% fat legs ratio and trunk/appendicular FMR). Additionally, older white and Mexican populations showed greater decreases for aLMI and LMI than their Chinese counterparts.ConclusionsWe present the sex- and age-specific percentiles for aLMI, LMI, FMI, and body fat distribution indices by DXA in Chinese adults, which may refine the individual assessment of the nutritional status of Chinese adults.

Objective Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is becoming a recognized cardiovascular (CV) risk factor. This study aimed to evaluate body composition, especially VAT, in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and to explore the association between VAT and SLE disease-related factors. Method Ninety-eight inpatients with SLE and 108 age-and body mass index (BMI)-matched healthy controls were included. Demographic and clinical parameters were recorded. The VAT was measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Result The mean age and disease duration of patients were 46.4 ± 13.0 years and 8.0 ± 7.0 years, respectively. Patients with SLE had higher VAT volume (p = 0.0015) and mass (p = 0.0017) than controls, especially in premenopausal and postmenopausal groups. The subanalysis of subjects with BMI less than 25 kg/m 2 indicated that patients had lower lean mass (p = 0.0005), fat-free mass (p = 0.0005), and fat-free mass index (p = 0.0001), but increased adiposity distribution than controls, including VAT volume and mass. However, overweight/obese patients had similar body composition with controls. The VAT volume correlated with BMI, age, menopausal status, hypertension, uric acid, creatinine, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride in both groups.
