Résumé L’idéologie dominante ne confère qu’au seul voyage la capacité de rencontre avec l’autre, reléguant de manière implicite la pratique touristique à une non-rencontre ou à une rencontre de moindre qualité, sauf dans les rares cas de « tourisme intelligent ». On défend ici l’idée selon laquelle le tourisme permet bien la rencontre. En effet, les pratiques des touristes expriment un certain rapport à l’autre, induit par la combinaison de deux phénomènes : la recréation et le déplacement, par lequel on associe des lieux autres à des pratiques du hors quotidien. Le tourisme est créateur de conditions propres visant à réduire cette altérité ou à en atténuer les effets. Les lieux et produits touristiques (clubs de vacances, et plus généralement formules standardisées) peuvent alors être relus comme des modèles de production / atténuation d’altérité et non pas seulement comme des vecteurs d’uniformisation et de banalisation à l’échelle mondiale. La question du lien entre altérité et tourisme permet donc de circonscrire une manière spécifique d’être avec l’autre, définissant autant le tourisme par rapport à d’autres formes de mobilité que d’autres formes de rencontre avec l’altérité.
