The crucial issue on entrepreneurship training in the tertiary institutions of learning is teaching students how to develop innovative business idea to the business venture start-up stage. This is the ability of the students to develop ideas that are out of the theoretical teaching of the academic environment. Several scholars have acknowledged the suitability of conventional teaching application for student ability to memorize and repeat taught exercises. This article form the core principles of idea generation in the business start-up, recognition and feasibility of entrepreneurial idea generation in the students of tertiary institutions of learning, strategic approaches on how best to enable and facilitates business idea in the graduating collegians. The Business Team Project Partnership Program (BT-PPP) identified as a strategic teaching method for facilitating entrepreneurial idea generation. The BT-PPP is where collegians work together in a practical business reality programme for the purpose to establishment a business with the collaboration of guest entrepreneurs and representative from the industries. This research paper developed out of the surveys pilot study among the students of real estate students and facilities management students of Universitie Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), in 2012 business team projects partnership program (entrepreneurship education course). Uses SPSS statistical analysis tools analyzed the responses of the participant of the BT-PPP. The mean differential and paired-sample t-test analysis of the students' response (n = 72) computed. The result shows that BT-PPP passed the suitabilityfitness for motivating entrepreneurial idea generation, interaction and networking, entrepreneurial learning outcome (value creation). In addition, the pedagogical initiative positively impact entrepreneurial selfemployment intention on the students of real estate and facilities management.
People across the world face growing insecurity, violent conflict spreading and intensifying and the natural systems on which human life depends on, is in jeopardy. Also, today the security condition of student hostel has become one of the major challenges facing Nigerian institutions, with continual media coverage of the state of insecurity of the students’ hostel, level of theft, burglary, abductions, and kidnappings. This research set out to proffer solutions to the rising insecurity challenges in the students’ hostel. This was achieved through the development of a framework from CPTED, on architectural strategies used to deter crime from thriving in the students’ hostel environment. A user perception survey was carried out using questionnaire issued to occupants of the various hostels. A case study was also carried out using visual survey and checklist to identify safety and security inadequacies in the buildings. Findings from questionnaire and case study revealed that the perceived level of safety was higher in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, then University of Maiduguri and least perception of students’ safety and security seen in Adamawa State University, Mubi. Hence, confirming the need to improve the impediment of variables like perimeter control, building configuration, external wall design, window design and site planning and layout, in respect to CPTED principles in the design of student hostel buildings in Nigeria.
Apparently, Nigeria is struggling with the developmental issues of the incessant power outage and lack of energy services. The primary sources of energy for office building are from national grid and gasoline generators. However, the former is not reliable and the latter is unsustainable; hence, the need to explore energy efficiency strategies to cut down the energy demand for cooling office building in Nigeria is unavoidable. The article aimed to assess the energy efficiency or performance index of the Nigerian Universities’ senate buildings in the north-eastern region (dry sub-humid climate). The research employed a case study approach, construction of baseline model with the Revit architecture software and applied DesignBuilder building analysis software to evaluate the energy performance of the senate building as built. The research findings showed that energy efficiency indexes for both universities’ senate buildings (57% and 63%) which were relatively below the recommended standard checklist. Also, the simulation results further showed that both case studies require 141.4wh/m2 and 127.3wh/m2 heating/cooling per annum compared to the stipulated LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standard of 15wh/m2. Therefore, research implication is that it is essential for the architects and engineers to incorporate more proactive energy efficiency strategies in the design of office buildings in Nigeria
Graduates' unemployment is a critical issue in Nigeria. The government and Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs) emphasis on the soft and practical skills integration in the curriculum structure is to turn out graduates with balanced capacities, diversities and flexibilities to survive the competitive labour market. Even though, little empirical findings are available on the level of soft and practical skills integration in the Nigeria public universities, particularly architecture programmes, the construction industry is seen as a major contributor to national economic development. Contemporary skills requirement for the graduating architects' selfempowerment is still contentious in the academic circle. This paper aimed to propose Architects' Career Skills Development (ArCaSD) assessment model and ten hypotheses were postulated to test the model. It is premised that the architecture students' perception on the level of infusion and acquisition of the entire range of soft skills and practical workshop practice embedded in the architecture's curriculum structure for self-empowerment be evaluated. Quantitative research methodological approach and structural equation modelling were employed to analyse the data collected from 153 students. The finding showed that all the ten hypotheses were supported and positively significant. In addition, the perception of the students on the soft skills integration is substantially positive and above average. The findings further indicates that, despite the practical skills acquisition, there is need to focused more on the architectural design rather than combining it with practical training in entrepreneurship and pragmatic workshop practice. In conclusion, students' narrow-mindedness on the importance of entrepreneurship and practical skills development call for innovation in architecture's curriculum structure and pedagogical approach to facilitates capacity building for employment creation and national economic development in Nigeria.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
