Résumé L’article décrit la réalité plurielle de l’école contemporaine, où des conceptions successives de l’égalité –égalité formelle, équité, reconnaissance– ne s’annulent pas mais s’articulent, de façon congruente ou contradictoire, dans les postures et les pratiques enseignantes. Il montre les limites et les dilemmes que chacune induit pour les enseignants. L’égalité formelle, liée au modèle politique français de la fin du XIX e siècle, assure des droits égaux aux élèves indépendamment des appartenances sociales, ce qui renforce l’inégalité scolaire des plus faibles qui ne sont pas reconnus dans leurs difficultés individuelles. L’équité individualise la relation mais risque de traiter les élèves comme des cas particuliers en occultant le caractère social des conduites. Dans le cadre de la reconnaissance, l’élève, défini par des caractéristiques collectives, bénéficie d’un traitement compensant les effets de la discrimination mais les tensions avec le mérite individuel augmentent et l’action positive se pervertit souvent en attitude compassionnelle. L’image du bricolage de l’action des enseignants masque les conceptions divergentes de l’égalité. Leurs contradictions, jamais politiquement traitées, laissent aux acteurs de l’école un sentiment ambivalent de liberté individuelle et d’impuissance face aux inégalités sociales.
L’enjeu accru de la scolarité –entre mobilité sociale et exclusion– et les transformations de l’action publique poussent à analyser le changement de la relation entre l’école et les parents de milieux populaires. L’article montre comment, entre injonction institutionnelle et situations vécues, le monde commun entre enseignant et parents se construit autour d’une incertitude : ni l’école ni la famille ne disposent d’une solution magique pour résoudre la difficulté scolaire d’un enfant, mais toutes deux s’engagent dans un travail de diagnostic et de traitement qu’il leur paraît préférable de mener conjointement. L’inquiétude devant les risques d’échec scolaire et de mise à l’écart de leur enfant incite les parents à rechercher des avis experts et des prises en charge par des spécialistes. La crainte d’une altération de leur rôle et d’un jugement d’inefficacité conduit les enseignants à déléguer l’action individualisée aux mêmes spécialistes et à se transformer en prescripteurs auprès des parents. La raison médicale (neurosciences, biogénétique, psychologie cognitive) produit un discours de vérité qui rassure et déculpabilise tant les parents que les enseignants.
Il y a une dizaine d'années dans le canton de Genève, des éducateurs sociaux ont été introduits au sein des écoles primaires du REP. Cet article vise à interroger la construction de ce nouveau rôle éducatif sous l'angle des collaborations interprofessionnelles et de la division du travail qui se sont instaurées entre les éducateurs sociaux d'une part, et les enseignants et les directeurs d'école d'autre part. Il montre que si les prescriptions formelles imposent une activité de concertation entre enseignants, directeur et éducateurs dans la mise en oeuvre du travail éducatif, la forme effective prise par ces collaborations interprofessionnelles s'opère ou se négocie en grande partie au regard des caractéristiques des situations concrètes. L'analyse distingue ainsi deux types de situations suscitant en effet le développement de formes collaboratives distinctes : les situations problématiques répertoriées, et les situations de crise. Parcours de vie et sociétéConnaître pour agir : usages professionnels dans le champ du social Les Missions locales jeunes (MLJ) (1) ont en particulier pour objet de permettre aux jeunes âgés de 16 à 25 ans de « bâtir et de mener à terme un parcours d'insertion sociale et professionnelle en mobilisant et en associant les partenaires institutionnels et socio-économiques » (extrait du contrat d'objectifs d'une MLJ). Toute l'activité de ce dispositif et de ses agents est construite autour de l'opérationnalisation de parcours, idéalement pensés comme une succession d'étapes vers un objectif en apparence sans équivoque, désigné en termes d'« insertion sociale et professionnelle ». Dans ce contexte, le face-à-face entre le jeune et le conseiller est en grande partie régulé par cette norme des « parcours » qu'ils ont à charge de concrétiser. Or, dans les faits, lesdits parcours ne vont pas de soi et n'ont pas la cohérence ou l'évidence attendue. Nous proposons ici d'identifier, à partir d'une enquête de terrain que nous avons réalisée dans plusieurs missions locales (2) , certaines de leurs caractéristiques sociales et les différentes manières dont les « professionnels du front » (Ion, 1998) composent avec les limitations imposées à leur pratique.
