L’activité d’écoute apparaît comme la deuxième pratique, après le chant, à être enseignée en éducation musicale à l’école primaire en France. La transposition didactique interne montre l’implication de l’enseignant dans la définition des savoirs à enseigner. En l’absence d’indications précises dans les programmes, quelles sont les oeuvres qu’ils choisissent de faire écouter à leurs élèves et pour quels objectifs ? Selon quels critères sélectionnent-ils les oeuvres ? Une enquête interacadémique (20 départements français) auprès de 935 professeurs des écoles, suivie d’entretiens semi-directifs auprès de 30 d’entre eux, vise à décrire et à comprendre les savoirs de référence pour la pratique de l’écoute. Ces savoirs dépendent des finalités que les enseignants poursuivent dans cette activité et des valeurs qu’ils rattachent à cet enseignement.
Résumé On a pour habitude d’attribuer le déficit dont semble souffrir l’enseignement de la musique à l’école primaire au manque de compétences de l’enseignant. Il est donc légitime de penser que l’enseignant qui pratique la musique dans sa vie personnelle est plus actif dans sa classe. Une enquête réalisée en 2006 auprès de 1022 enseignants de l’académie de Nancy-Metz fait apparaître une diversité des pratiques d’enseignement de la musique telle que l’on peut imaginer le poids du propre rapport à la musique de l’enseignant. Or, l’analyse des résultats de l’enquête montre que si un lien entre les activités musicales que l’enseignant met en œuvre dans sa classe et ses pratiques musicales personnelles, son éducation musicale (familiale, scolaire) et ses goûts peut être établi, l’ensemble des variables relatives au rapport personnel à la musique de l’enseignant n’expliquerait pas plus de 15 % de la variance des pratiques d’enseignement en Éducation musicale au niveau du volume horaire, de la fréquence des activités, des outils et des projets.
