The effects of three canopy heights (10, 25 and 40 cm) and two N rates (50 and 250 kg ha−1 year−1) on herbage accumulation (HA), participation of leaf categories in the leaf area index (LAI) and photosynthesis of grazed “Mulato II” brachiariagrass (Brachiaria brizantha × B. decumbens × B. ruziziensis) were investigated during two summer growing seasons in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. The HA and LAI increased linearly from 8560 to 13600 kg DM ha−1 year−1 and 2.3 to 5.5 m2 m−2, respectively, as canopy height increased. Mulato II brachiariagrass maintained at 10 cm canopy height showed greater proportion of young leaves, but was less productive than taller canopies. Taller canopies had greater proportion of mature leaves in the LAI as well as greater photosynthesis. The greater N rate contributed to increased LAI, leaf and canopy photosynthesis rates and HA but did not affect the LAI composition. The total leaf area is more important to HA than the proportion of young leaves in the LAI, as taller canopies were more productive, suggesting that maintaining Mulato II brachiariagrass at 25 or 40 cm is advantageous for this grass.

Although Brazil holds one of the largest commercial cattle herd in the world, about 209 million head (IBGE, 2011), it is observed that the average stocking rate is very low, resulting in lower potential productivity of the livestock sector. Among the various factors that contribute to this low productivity, can highlight the seasonality in food supply as an aggravating factor for the productive sector. Basically, in all regions of Brazil, seasonality is characterized by variations in the availability and quality of forage in response to changes in climatic conditions which do not allow forage plants have uniform growth throughout the year. The choice of forage grass to form a pasture, must be very careful to increase their productivity of dry matter and crude protein content, with seasonal balance and acceptability by animals. The pasture management aims to achieve balance between the performance / quality of forage produced, maintaining the desired botanical composition. Associated with these factors has been able to obtain good results by field of animal production. To obtain proper pasture management, it is necessary to know beyond the physical, structural and anatomical characteristics of forage species, the amount of forage offered to animals and nutritive value, but also the amount of forage being consumed by the animal and nutritional value the forage actually consumed.

The understanding of plant morphological and physiological responses to shading can contribute to developing sustainable silvopastoral systems (SPS). Our objective was to evaluate the shading effect on herbage accumulation (HA), plant‐part composition, physiology, and canopy structural characteristics of Marandu palisadegrass {Urochloa brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) R.D. Webster [syn. Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) Stapf]} under intermittent defoliation in a SPS with Eucalyptus urograndis (hybrid of Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden and Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake) in Sinop, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block arranged under a strip‐split‐plot, where the plots were allocated to four distances from the Eucalyptus grove (3, 6, 10, and 15‐m) in the SPS, on both faces (north and south), with four replications. The evaluations were done during two summer rainy seasons (RS1 and RS2) and one dry season (DS). The herbage accumulation (HA) in RS1 (4290 kg DM ha–1) was 51% greater than in RS2. The greatest canopy height, light interception, and leaf area index (LAI) values were measured during RS1 (25 cm, 91%, and 3.5 cm2 cm–2, respectively). Leaf photosynthesis rate was less at the 3‐m distance (12.5 μmol CO2 m–2 s–1) than at other distances (17.3 μmol CO2 m–2 s–1). We conclude that Marandu palisadegrass has the ability to physiologically adapt to shaded environments, although the dynamics along the whole tree growing cycle needs to be considered so that grass productivity can be sustained in the long‐term. Core Ideas Longer shading impacted canopy structure and forage accumulation at 3‐m distance. Physiological responses shows reduced light effects on the forage growth pattern. Morphologic composition and sward characteristics were only affected at 3‐m distance. Leaf photosynthesis rate was lesser close to the grove. Silvopastoral systems is an option for livestock production in the Brazilian Amazon.

In Mozambique, the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is grown both as a leafy vegetable, the terminal shoots or vines being progressively harvested during the season, and as a root crop. It is produced in the dry season, in areas with a high water table or with irrigation, and in the rainy season. This paper reports the results of measurements made during the 1995 dry season to evaluate the effects of water availability and the frequency of vine harvesting on the processes of radiation interception, dry matter production and partitioning. An irrigated crop (cv. TIS 2534) with a single, end of season vine-harvest (H 1 ) intercepted 71 % of the total solar radiation, reducing to 52 % with weekly (H 4 ) harvests. The corresponding values for a rain-fed crop were 33 and 20 % respectively. When the leaf area index (L) exceeded 3-4, virtually full interception of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) occurred, except when frequent vine-harvests modified the architecture of the leaf canopy. The extinction coefficient (k, PAR) was highly variable: at a given leaf area, interception was greatest earlier in the season, with infrequent harvests and with irrigation. Total dry matter production (vines, foliage and storage roots), over a period of 161 days, reached 23 t ha −1 in the single harvest (H 1 ), irrigated crop, less when the vines were harvested weekly (H 4 ). The corresponding value for the rain-fed crop, which was able to resume active growth immediately after a rainfall event, following a prolonged dry period, was 7 t ha −1 . The efficiency of conversion of PAR into dry matter (ε s ) was 2.74 g MJ −1 in the irrigated treatments combined, decreasing to around 73 % of this without irrigation. The value of ε s appeared not to be influenced by dry air or high temperatures. The reduction in ε s due to drought was less than the corresponding reduction in intercepted PAR. Increasing the frequency of vine harvests increased the partitioning of assimilates to vines. Irrigation had similar effects early in the season, but afterwards it encouraged preferential growth of the storage roots. The end of season harvest index (h) for vines increased with harvesting frequency from, for example, 0.08 (H 1 ) to 0.38 (H 4 ) in the irrigated crop. By comparison, irrigation increased 'h' for storage roots from 0.24 (rain-fed) to 0.57 in the H 1 treatment. The total harvest index (vines plus roots) increased with the number of vine harvests from 0.32 (H 1 ) to 0.55 (H 4 ) in the rain-fed crop, and from 0.62 (H 1 ) to 0.72 (H 4 ) in the irrigated crop. Clearly, 'h' is not a conservative parameter in the sweet potato, but is sensitive to crop management practices and to soil water availability. †

In silvopastoral (SP) systems, forage responses depend on the microenvironment in which the plants develop. Our objective was to evaluate canopy and tillering characteristics of shaded 'Marandu' palisadegrass [Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst A Rich) Stapf, syn. Urochloa brizantha] under continuous stocking in a SP system. Treatments were one full sun (FS) and three shaded systems (silvopasture, SP) corresponding to distances from tree groves: 7.5 m north (SP1), and 15 m (SP2) and 7.5 m south (SP3) studied during two rainy seasons (Year 1 and Year 2). The tree in the SP system was Eucalyptus urograndis (hybrid of Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden × Eucalyptus urophylla S. T. Blake). The photosynthetic active radiation was greater in FS (923 μmol m-2 s-1), followed by SP2 (811 μmol m-2 s-1), SP1 (727 μmol m-2 s-1) and SP3 (673 μmol m-2 s-1). Forage accumulation in FS was 15% greater than the mean of SP1, SP2 and SP3 (10,663 kg DM/ha). There was no difference in net accumulation of leaf, stem and dead material, averaging 3,302, 3,420 and 4,063 kg DM/ha respectively. Leaf accumulation and accumulation rate were greater in Year 2, and leaf accumulation rate was similar among treatments (19 kg DM ha−1 day−1). Leaf proportion increased 14% from Year 1 to Year 2. Specific leaf area was greater for treatments SP1 and SP3 (193 cm2/g). Tiller population density was similar across treatments in Year 1. Shaded palisadegrass maintains leaf productivity similar to FS under continuous stocking in an SP system.
