Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho agronômico do capim-xaraés [Brachiaria brizantha (A. Rich.) Stapf. cv. Sward structure and herbage accumulation in Brachiaria brizantha cultivar Xaraés in response to strategies of grazingAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic performance of Xaraés palisadegrass [Brachiaria brizantha (A. Rich.) Stapf cv. Xaraés] in response to rotational grazing managements defined by either pre-graze canopy light interception (LI) or calendar days. Mean pre-graze sward height was 29.5 cm for the 95% LI pastures, 41.6 cm for 100% LI, and 34.2 cm for the 28-day schedule. Mean post-graze sward height was 14.6 cm across treatments, which corresponded to a mean 0.73 leaf area index, 42% LI and 65.2º foliage angle. At pre-graze, foliage angles were not affected by grazing management (mean = 41.6º). Sward height and LI were highly correlated across treatments. Grazing at 100% LI resulted in longer intervals between grazings and higher herbage accumulation than the other two treatments, although this higher accumulation corresponded mainly to large amounts of stem and dead material.
Pre-graze forage mass (FM) was higher for 100% LI pastures. Pastures grazed at 95% LI and 28-d resulted in similar pregraze FM in the spring, both lower than that of the 100%-LI treatment. Grazing at 95% LI resulted in higher leaf percentage in pre-graze forage, although total pre-graze FM was lower. Forage produced in paddocks grazed at 100% LI had lower pregraze leaf percentage, indicating that the higher forage accumulation in that treatment was a result of higher stem elongation, likely due to light competition within the canopy. Rest periods beyond the point where swards achieved 95% LI (100% LI or 28-d during the summer) resulted in higher accumulation and higher pre-graze FM, although this corresponded mainly to large amounts of stem and dead material, which could negatively affect the nutritive value of the forage produced and animal performance.
-The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of the tiller size/density compensation mechanism in Tifton 85 bermudagrass swards grazed by sheep under continuous stocking. Treatments corresponded to four sward steady state conditions (5, 10, 15, and 20 cm of sward surface height), maintained by sheep grazing. The experimental design was a complete randomized block with four replicates. Pasture responses evaluated include: tiller population density, tiller mass, leaf mass and leaf area per tiller, and herbage mass. Tiller volume, leaf area index, tiller leaf/stem ratio, and tiller leaf area/volume ratio were calculated and simple regression analyses between tiller population density and tiller mass were performed. Measurements were made in December, 1998, and January, April, and July, 1999. The swards showed a tiller size/density compensation mechanism in which high tiller population densities were associated with small tillers and vice-versa, except in July, 1999. Regression analyses revealed that linear coefficients were steeper than the theoretical expectation of -3/2. Increments in herbage mass were attributable to increases in tiller mass in December and January. Leaf area/volume ratio values of Tifton 85 tillers were much lower than those commonly found for temperate grass species.Index terms: Cynodon, leaf area index, mass, density, plant morphology.
Brachiaria sp. grasses are widely used in planted pastures in Brazil. ‘Mulato II’ is a productive Brachiaria hybrid (B. ruziziensis × B. decumbens × B. brizantha) with high nutritive value, but it has not been evaluated under continuous stocking in Brazil, despite this method being widely used by producers. The objectives of this research were to quantify the effects of three canopy heights (10, 25, and 40 cm), maintained by mimicking continuous stocking, and two N rates (50 and 250 kg ha–1 yr–1) on herbage accumulation (HA), grazing efficiency (GE), and nutritive value of Mulato II during two summer rainy seasons in Piracicaba, Brazil. The N rates were chosen so that canopy height effects could be evaluated under distinctly different grass growth rates. Grass HA increased linearly (8640 to 13,400 kg DM ha–1 yr–1), in vitro digestible organic matter (IVDOM) decreased linearly (652 to 586 g kg–1), and GE decreased (linear and quadratic; 65 to 44%) as canopy height increased. There were no height × N rate interactions for these responses. Mulato II was less productive (7940 vs. 13 380 kg ha–1 yr–1) and had lesser IVDOM (581 vs. 652 g kg–1) at the lower N rate. Thus, although GE and IVDOM were greatest for 10 cm, HA was 36% less for the 10‐ than the 40‐cm height, and despite greatest HA occurring at 40 cm, both GE and IVDOM were greater at shorter heights. These data suggest that ∼25‐cm canopy height is optimal for continuously stocked Mulato II.
Brachiaria and Cynodon are important pasture grasses in Brazil. Convert HD 364 (Dow AgroSciences, São Paulo, Brazil) brachiariagrass (Brachiaria hybrid CIAT 36087; also known as Mulato II) is a new hybrid released for use in a broad range of environments. It has high nutritive value and yield, but there are no year‐round comparisons, including the dry season, with other pasture grasses. Forage accumulation and crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and in vitro digestible organic matter (IVDOM) concentrations were evaluated for Convert HD 364, Marandu palisadegrass {B. brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) R. D. Webster [syn. Urochloa brizantha (A. Rich.) Stapf]; CIAT 6297}, and Tifton 85 bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) during dry and rainy seasons from 2011 to 2013. Irrigated and rainfed plots were harvested every 28 and 42 d. Convert HD 364 had similar or greater forage accumulation (17.9–22.8 Mg DM ha−1) than Marandu and Tifton 85 (15% greater than Marandu and 12% greater than Tifton 85 when irrigated and harvested every 28 d). Tifton 85 CP concentration was 140 g kg−1, greater than that of the other grasses when harvested every 28 d and irrigated. Convert HD 364 (537 g kg−1) NDF concentration was least, regardless of irrigation, harvest frequency, or season. This was associated with IVDOM concentration greater than 650 g kg−1, similar to that of Marandu. Convert HD 364 is a viable option for diversification of pasture‐based animal production systems in tropical areas due to high forage accumulation and nutritive value when fertilized and well managed.
Several compensatory mechanisms in pastures do not allow optimisation of responses from the processes of herbage production and utilisation. Compensation due to tiller size/density relationships is one of these mechanisms. This experiment evaluated this process for Coastcross bermudagrass and compared the responses to those reported for temperate forages. Treatments were "steady state" sward surface heights of 5, 10, 15, and 20 cm that were maintained from August, 1998, through July, 1999 by sheep grazing. The experimental design was a randomised complete block, replicated four times. Pasture responses were evaluated on four separate dates (15/12/1998, 25/01/1999, 07/04/1999 and 04/07/1999) with respect to: tiller population density, tiller weight, leaf mass and leaf area per tiller and herbage mass (biomass). Tiller volume, leaf area index (LAI), tiller leaf:stem ratio and tiller leaf area:volume ratio (R) were calculated. Simple regression analyses between tiller population density and tiller weight were also performed. Coastcross swards showed a tiller size/density compensation mechanism where high tiller population densities were associated with small tillers and vice-versa; except on the last evaluation. However, regression analysis revealed linear coefficients of -3.83 to -2.05, which are lower than the theoretical expectation of -3/2. The lower R values observed, when compared to those reported for perennial ryegrass, suggest that Coastcross swards optimised their LAI via clonal integration among tillers in contrast with tillers of cool-season grasses that respond more as individuals. However, this hypothesis has yet to be experimentally verified.
