A cross-sectional study based on a planned sampling was carried out to determine flock-level risk factors associated to Leptospira spp. infection in dairy goat flocks in a semiarid region of Northeastern Brazil. Serum samples from 975 adult dairy goats from 110 flocks were examined for Leptospira spp. antibodies by MAT using 24 serovars. A structured questionnaire focusing on risk factors for leptospirosis was completed for each flock. Of the 110 flocks 48 (43.6%; 95% CI: 34.2-53.4%) presented at least one seropositive animal, and most frequent serovar was Autumnalis (10.9%). Ninety-eight (8.7%; 95% CI: 5.7-12.9%; design effect=4.23) of the 975 goats tested seropositive at MAT, and serovar Autumnalis was also the most frequent (1.74%). Presence of rodents (OR=2.78; P=0.015) was identified as a risk factor. There was also association between history of infertility (OR=14.74; P=0.015) and prevalence of positive flocks. We suggest that a program of rodent control should be included in the flock management practices aiming to reduce transmission of the agent and then to reduce prevalence of positive flocks and occurrence of reproductive disorders such as impaired fertility.
The aim of this investigation was to determine the seroprevalence of Brucella ovis in sheep flocks and individual sheep in the Sertão mesorregion, Paraíba state, Northeastern Brazil, as well as to identify risk factors. Blood samples were collected from 1,134 sheep from 103 flocks in 17 counties. For the serological diagnosis of B. ovis infection the agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID) was carried out. A flock was considered positive when there was at least one seropositive animal. Of the 103 flocks used, 21 (20.39%) presented at least one seropositive sheep, and of the 1,134 sheep examined 59 (5.20%) seropositive animals were diagnosed. Cleaning of facilities (odds ratio = 7.13; 95% CI=1.56-32.47; p=0.011) and purchase of animals (odds ratio = 6.06; 95% CI=1.39-26.48; p=0.017) were identified as risk factors. Based on the risk factor analysis, it is recommended the diagnosis of B. ovis infection prior to purchase of sheep and the periodic cleaning of the facilities on the farm.INDEXING TERMS: Brucellosis, Brucella ovis, sheep, epidemiology, Semiarid of Brazil.
The aim of this survey was to determine the frequency of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies in goats and sheep slaughtered in different slaughterhouses in the State of Paraiba, in the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil. Blood samples were collected from 500 goats and 500 sheep randomly selected. To verify the presence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), using 24 serovars as antigens, was used. From the 1,000 animals analyzed, 82 (8.2%; 95% CI = 7.0%-10.5%) were sero-reactive being 26/500 (5.2%; 95% CI = 3.5%-7.5%) in goats and 56/500 (11.2%; 95% CI = 8.7%-14.2%) in sheep. The most frequent serovars were Hardjobovis (14.6%) and Autumnalis (13.4%). In goats, the most frequent serovar was the Hardjobovis, and in sheep the Ballum, with frequencies of 19.2% and 17.9%, respectively. There was a significant difference in the frequency of positive animals among slaughterhouses, both for goats (p = 0.035) and for sheep (p = 0.004), with the county of Alhandra presenting the highest frequency of seropositive animals for both species. It is concluded that sheep and goats from the semiarid region of the Northeastern Brazil may have become adapted to the serovars Hardjobovis e Autumnalis, as well as wild rodents may be involved in the transmission of the disease. It is possible that the climatic conditions influenced in the transmissibility of the leptospirosis, especially in the Mata Paraibana mesoregion, however it was not considered as being sufficient to justify the low frequency of seropositive animals. In this way, it is possible to suggest the hypothesis that the rusticity of the small ruminants in the studied region contributed to the low sero-reactivity verified. Key words: Adaptability. Goats. ResumoO objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a frequência de anticorpos anti-Leptospira spp. em caprinos e ovinos abatidos em diferentes matadouros no Estado da Paraíba, região semiárida do Nordeste brasileiro. Foi coletado sangue de 500 caprinos e 500 ovinos aleatoriamente selecionados. Para verificar a presença de anticorpos anti-Leptospira spp. empregou-se o teste soroaglutinação microscópica (SAM), utilizando-se 24 sorovares como antígenos. Dos 1.000 animais analisados 82 (8,2%; IC 95%= 7,0%-10,5%) foram sororreagentes, sendo 26/500 (5,2%; IC 95% =3,5%-7,5%) em caprinos e 56/500 (11,2%; IC 95% 8,7%-14,2%) em ovinos. Os sorovares mais frequentes foram Hardjobovis (14,6%) e Autumnalis (13,4%). Na espécie caprina, o sorovar mais frequente foi o Hardjobovis, e na espécie ovina o Ballum, com frequências de 19,2% e 17,9%, respectivamente. Houve diferença significativa na frequência de positivos entre os matadouros, tanto para caprinos (p = 0,035) quanto para ovinos (p = 0,004), com o município de Alhandra apresentando a maior frequência de soropositivos para ambas as espécies. To serologically diagnose T. gondii infection, the indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) was used. Flocks with at least one seropositive animal were considered positive. Among the 63 flocks, 28 (44.44%) were positive, and 60 (11.11%) of the 540 animals were seropositive. Variable flock size > 25 animals was identified as a risk factor (odds ratio = 3.2; 95% CI = 1.09 -9.34; P = 0.033). Leptospirosis in native mixed-breed sheep slaughtered in a semiarid region of Brazil.
O objetivo do presente trabalho foi determinar as prevalências de propriedades positivas e animais soropositivos para Chlamydophila abortus em ovinos deslanados da região semiárida do Nordeste do Brasil, bem como identificar fatores de risco. Foram colhidas amostras de sangue de 476 ovinos procedentes de 72 propriedades em 14 municípios na mesorregião do Sertão, Estado da Paraíba. Para o diagnóstico sorológico da infecção por Chlamydophila abortus foi utilizada a reação de fixação de complemento (RFC). Uma propriedade foi considerada positiva quando apresentou pelo menos um animal soropositivo. Das 72 propriedades usadas 38 (52,8%) apresentaram pelo menos um animal soropositivo, e dos 476 animais 94 (19,7%) foram soropositivos. Participação em exposições (odds ratio =4,31; IC 95% =1,80-10,35; p=0,011) foi identificada como fator de risco. Sugere-se que a infecção por Chlamydophila abortus encontra-se disseminada em ovinos da região, e baseando-se na análise de fatores de risco, recomenda-se o controle sanitário nas exposições de animais.
