As the references to witches and black sabbaths in the Spanish literature are just a few in the centuries when the witch hunt reached its peak, this work opens a new line of research which focuses on the treaties and manuals for inquisitors as the raw material from which it is possible to draw a collection of fictional stories on this subject (which always appear, indeed, as examples, cases or real anecdotes). We will take the Malleus Maleficarum as the main source to prove these facts, as it was the work which had the greatest influence across Europe in the formation of the concept of witchcraft. The conclusions reached here affect both the literary consideration of this phenomenon and the nature of it.
AbstractThis in-depth research deals with the witch as a literary character in the Golden Age. From the analysis of all the existing 16 th and 17 th century texts where the witch appears in some way, it will fi nally prove that this character is not abundant as it should be expected in the works of the period, since the emergence of witch-hunting took place during the aforementioned centuries. Therefore, we have subsequently focused on other texts that may reveal how the archetype of the witch has been spread out, despite its poor presence in the fi ctional literature of these centuries: the treaties and documents of the inquisitorial processes. These genres are the ones that actually provide the key to understand where and how the fi gure that interests us was born and developed, and they lead the researcher to look for new thesis to approach the phenomenon of witchcraft.
