Abstract. Sofiyanti N, Isda MN, Juliantari E, Pranata S, Suriatno R. 2019. The inventory and spore morphology of ferns from Bengkalis Island, Riau Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 3223-3236. Bengkalis Island is one of main islands at coastal region of Riau Province, Indonesia. The first fern inventory had been conducted on this island, to identify the fern checklist as well as examined the morphology of their spores. Samples were collected from 2 subdistricts and 12 study sites, using exploration method. The spore specimens were coated using AU, before observation using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). A total of 22 fern species are recorded from Bengkalis Islands. These species belong to 3 orders, i.e. Gleicheniales (1 species), Polypodiales (20 species) and Schizaeales (1 species). The spore characteristic indicated similar unity of spore, i.e. monad spore, with triangular, subtriangular, tetrahedral and reniform shape. Three basic types of spore have been observed, i.e. monolete, dilete, and trilete. The spore class observed in this study are small (22 ± 0.88 µm), medium (27.35 ± 1.45 to 47.85 ± 0.88 µm) and large (51.34 ± 1.83 to 53.8 ± 1.81 µm). The ornamentation of perisphore is the main character to distinguished species within one genus.
Wild Mango from Sumatera is potentially new immunostimulant. It contains mangiferin, which is potentially become the immunostimulant candidate. This study aimed to prove the immunostimulatory effect of wild mango leaves extract on white rat peritoneum fluid induced by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The immunostimulatory effect was determined based on the activity and capacity of macrophage phagocytosis. This study used 54 male white rats about 130 g -290 g. Based on the results, the highest phagocytosis activity of macrophage cells was found in ethanol extract of Mangga Hutan leaves dose 2 with a percentage of phagocytosis activity was 84%. The highest phagocytosis capacity of the macrophage cells was also found in ethanol extract of Mangga Hutan leaves dose 2 with an average phagocytic capacity of 171.67 from 50 active macrophages. Results of this study indicated that wild mango leaves from Sumatera has the potential immunostimulant activity. This indicates that the wild mango have the potential for therapeutic efficacy for the prevention of degenerative diseases caused by immune deficiencies.
Abstract. Saudah, Zumaidar, Darusman, Firmawati, Rislim DI, Juliantari E. 2022. Molecular authentication of Etlingera spp. (Zingiberaceae) in Aceh Province, Indonesia using DNA barcoding. Biodiversitas 23: 3976-3983. Etlingera spp.or locally known as Etlingera spp.(Acehnese) already has strong basic evidence in the treatment of traditional tribes in Aceh such as cough medicine, fever and sprains, and used to food and spices. Etlingera spp. used in various places varies based on morphological characteristics. On the other hand, for the development of phytopharmaceutical, the use of Etlingera spp. as plant herb requires authentication about the names. This study aimed to authenticate Etlingera spp. from Aceh using DNA barcoding. Nuclear ITS and trnL-F DNA sequences were used to authenticate among species of Etlingera spp. In this study different species of Etlingera spp. can be differentiated effectively by comparing the DNA barcoding regions. ITS sequence data can identify two different species of Etlingera (E. elatior and E. hemisphaerica). The two identified Etlingera spp.species can be used as important information for further research related to their pharmacological studies. One marker and combined analysis of ITS and trnL-F data proved that the Etlingeraspp. is a monophyletic group and provided phylogenetic information in closely related species. The intraspecific and interspecific variation of ITS markers were more discriminatory regions, while trnL-F IGS were of lower divergences. Our findings indicated that DNA barcoding is efficient and powerful to authenticate herbal medicine Etlingera spp..
Obat Pahit from Lingga Malay ethnic is a traditional medicine which has believed by the local people to maintain the body stamina (immunomodulators and antioxidants). This study aimed to investigate the effect of Obat Pahit Potion on kidney histological structure of white male rats (Rattus norvegicus). This research was an experimental study with a Randomized Complete Block Design consisted of 15 treatments and 3 replications. The experiment groups consisted of control groups (Stimuno, distilled water, and CMC-Na 1%) and three treatment groups of Obat Pahit Potion (Kalan, SP4, Linau) with 4 different dosages. The samples of a kidney of white rats were prepared for histological observation using paraffin method and Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. The results of this study showed that three kinds of Obat Pahit with four different dosages showed the expansion of glomerular cells on kidney tissue. Damage that occurs in the kidneys is still in small amounts and normal range which is less than 25%. The results of this study provide information for the society that the consumption of Obat Pahit Potion will not cause toxicity effect on the kidney.
Abstract. Sofiyanti N, Sari AK, Iriani D, Mutrofin R, Taufiq I, Juliantari E, Pranata S. 2021. Morphological and anatomical study of four Pyrrosia (Polypodiaeae) species from Rumbai forest, Riau Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 4905-4914. Pyrrosia is one of genera in Polypodiaceae that is commonly distributed at Riau Forest, Indonesia. However, the detailed morphological characteristics and anatomical study of Pyrrosia in this region is scanty. This study was aimed to characterize the morphology and anatomy of four Pyrrosia species (P. angustata, P. lanceolata, P. nipoboloides and P. piloselloides) from Rumbai Forest, Riau Province. All of the specimens were collected in the field. Morphological characters were examined in detail. Anatomical preparation was conducted using the paraffin method. The specimens were then observed and photographed using a light microscope. Principal Component Analysis had been carried out using a total of 52 morphological and anatomical characters. The result showed the morphological variation among the species, especially on the shape of sterile lamina and sori characteristics. Anatomically, the examined species showed variations in outline shape in the transverse section of rhizomes and stipes, schelerenchymatous sheath and strand, as well as number of meristele. The PCA results showed that only three characters (shape of sterile laminae, base of sterile laminae, and upper surface color of sterile laminae) have eigenvalue over 1.00 and together these explain 100% of the total variability of the data. The anatomical data in this study is reported for the first time on Pyrrosia from Riau province.
