SUMMARYShort (8-10 h) photoperiods stimulated branching, flowering and enlargement of adventitious tuberous roots of Viguiera discolor Baker, a native plant of the Brazilian cerrado. Inulin was mostly accumulated in parenchyma cells associated with secondary xylem of tuberous roots. Accumulation was greater in plants grown under conditions that induce flowering (I) than in plants grown under conditions that do not induce flowering (NI) (photoperiods longer than 12 h). Although total fructan concentration was similar in both conditions [approx. 460 mg (g dry mass)"^], the amount of inulin in I was 10 times that of oligosaccharides, whereas in NI it was 6 times greater. In addition, the relative molecular mass of inulin was slightly lower in NI (16600) than in I (18600), but considerably higher than those reported for other Asteraceae (approx. 5 500). The results suggest that flower-mductive conditions affect fructan metabolism in Viguiera discolor without altering the total fructose.
Method for determination of reducing sugar applicable on sugarcane payment systemAbstract This work aimed to evaluate a colorimetric method of reducing sugar (RS) analysis based on its reaction with triphenyl tetrazolium chloride, which is of fast operation and suitable to be applied in the sugarcane mills. As the purity of sugarcane juice presents high correlation with RS, an equation of linear regression (RS/RJ) was developed, and it was compared to other equations developed in São Paulo (RS/SP) and Paraíba (RS/PB). The RS/SP equation, which is currently adopted in Rio de Janeiro, showed a higher downward slope in comparison to the others, indicating the need to create an equation, which is proper to each sugarcane producing region.
