Activation of the carbon dioxide molecule was achieved using bicyclic amidines (DBU, PMDBD, and DBN). The solution reaction of CO(2) with amidines yielded the corresponding zwitterionic complexes through the formation of a N-CO(2) bond. (13)C NMR data confirmed the carbamic nature of the carbamic zwitterions, DBU-CO(2) and PMDBD-CO(2). However, when these adducts were crystallized, the X-ray analyses of the single crystals were in agreement with bisamidinium bicarbonate salt structures, indicating that structural changes occurred in the crystallization process. The elemental and thermogravimetric analysis data for the carbamic zwitterions, DBU-CO(2) and PMDBD-CO(2), initially obtained by the direct reaction of amidines with CO(2), suggest that these molecules are probably associated with one molecule of water by hydrogen-bond formation (amidinium(+)-COO(-)...H(2)O). A correlation was observed between the thermal stability and the transcarboxylating activity for the amidine-CO(2) complexes. Theoretical calculations of hardness were performed at the B3LYP/cc-pVTZ level of theory and showed concordance with the experimental reactivity of DBU and PMDBD toward CO(2).

In a search for antiprotozoan compounds, 34 new 3,5-disubstituted-tetrahydro-2H-1,3,5-thiadiazine-2-thione derivatives were synthesized and tested in vitro against Trypanosoma cruzi and Trichomonas vaginalis. Some of them showed important antiprotozoan activity. In vivo assays of compounds which showed remarkable in vitro activity against T. vaginalis were carried out.

Recebido em 19/8/99; aceito em 29/8/00 ANALYSIS OF THE ALCOHOLS, ESTERS AND CARBONYL COMPOUNDS IN FUSEL OIL SAMPLES. Analysis of alcohols, esters and carbonyl compounds were performed using HRGC and HPLC techniques in samples of fusel oils from three different Brazilian alcohol distilleries. High content of isoamyl alcohol (390 g.L -1 ), isobutyl alcohol (158 g.L -1 ), ethyl alcohol (28,4 g.L -1 ), methyl alcohol (16,6 g.L -1 ) and n-propyl alcohol (11,9 g.L -1 ) were found. These compounds represent 77 ± 8 % of the approximated weight of a liter of fusel oils. The obtained results show the feasibility of using fusel oils as low-cost raw material for the synthesis of chemicals.Keywords: fusel oils; alcohols; esters; carbonyl compounds. Quim. A produção de álcool em uma usina de porte médio pode alcançar até 1,5 milhões de litros por dia. A proporção média de óleo fúsel é estimada em 2,5 litros cada 1000 litros de álcool. Assim, torna-se evidente que o volume de óleo fúsel produzido anualmente é considerá-vel, levando-se em conta que a produção de álcool na safra 1997/98 foi de 15,4 bilhões de litros 6,7 . Este trabalho tem como objetivo o estudo qualitativo e quantitativo da composição química do óleo fúsel com vistas à fornecer subsídios para a sua exploração industrial. Artigo PARTE EXPERIMENTAL ReagentesOs padrões de álcoois, ésteres, áldeídos e cetonas foram sempre de grau analítico (Merck, Aldrich). O álcool etílico e o álcool metílico utilizados foram de grau cromatográfico (Carlo Erba, Mallinckrot). A água utilizada foi previamente destilada e posteriormente desionizada por um sistema Milli-Q (Millipore). O reagente 2,4-dinitrofenilidrazina (Aldrich) foi purificado por três sucessivas recristalizações em metanol. AmostrasForam coletadas amostras de três indústrias produtoras de açúcar e álcool do Estado de São Paulo. As amostras foram codificadas como OF-1, OF-2 e OF-3. Para uma melhor representatividade foram coletadas três amostras de cada produtor em diferentes etapas da safra. Uma das coletas foi uma alíquota proveniente de um tanque de 5000 litros de óleo fúsel correspondente ao total acumulado durante toda uma safra. Assim, esta última fornece uma idéia da composição anual média do óleo fúsel produzido pela usina correspondente. EquipamentosPara a análise de álcoois e ésteres empregou-se um Cromatógrafo gasoso HP-5890A equipado com uma coluna HP-FFAP (50 m x 0,2 mm x 0,33 µm, polietileno glicol modificado) e detector de ionização em chama (FID). A metodologia empregada foi similar aquela utilizada na análise de aguardente [8][9][10][11] . Study of the anticancer properties of thirty-four 3,5-disubstituted-tetrahydro-2H-1,3,5-thiadiazin-2-thione derivatives has been carried out by using cytotoxicity assays against HeLa, HT-29 and Hep G2 cells. The decomposition products of thiadiazinthione 1 m have been studied and their anticancer properties evaluated.

PPP MO theory initiated in 1953 a reliable SCF approach to excited states in multielectronic systems. Further developments, such as Del Bene-Jaffk's c m / s method, modified Pople's c m all-valence electron (AVE) approach to improve the results but maintained some basic troubles of this theory which were not in the PPP method. A new approach to SCF-MO-NDO calculations with a priori chosen parameters and configuration interaction of singly excited states is developed in this paper from the ground considerations of the PPP method and it is called CNWL. Thus, AVE m approximations have been modified in order to take into account independent monocentric terms in the Fock matrix elements for each kind of azimuthal quantum number atomic orbitals in the basis set. The only input data are Slater exponents, valence state ionization potentials, and electron affinities of each kind of atomic orbital. No parameters are empirically adjusted to fit results to experimental or previous accurate theoretical data. CNDOL is suitable for obtaining theoretically consistent results in polyatomic systems which are too large to be treated by more sophisticated procedures. Applications to hydrocarbons are shown which compare PPP results with the new AVE approach derived from it here.
