The utilization of non-wood biomass for fuels and chemicals production is widely studied in recent years. This paper reported the application of trichloroacetate as catalyst in the production of cellulose acetate from paddy (Oriza sativa) rice straw and oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) empty fruit bunch (EFB). Firstly, pre-treatment by using H2O in acidic condition was carried out prior to the soda pulping by using NaOH 10%, solid to liquid ratio 1:7. The pre-treatment and pulping aim to separate cellulose from lignin and hemicellulose. Furthermore, in order to purify the cellulose, bleaching was applied to the pulps by using NaClO2 0.5% and H2O2 10%. Finally, the paddy rice straw pulp and oil palm EFB pulp were subjected to the acetylation by using acetic anhydride as acetylating agent in CH3COOH condition with catalyst CCl3COOH and H2SO4. The analysis results by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed that C=O stretching from cellulose acetate at around 1730 cm−1. Furthermore, the morphological surface and crystallinity of the raw materials and products was analysed by using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The acetylated cellulose diameter and cristallinity decreased after the acetylation reaction.

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini berupa pelatihan tentang penggunaan istilah-istilah teknis bahasa Inggris kepariwisataan bagi para pemandu wisata local di dusun Ende yang dilaksanakan di dusun Ende, Sengkol, Pujut, Lombok Tengah. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah meningkatkan kemampuan penguasaan istilah-istilah teknis bahasa Inggris pariwisata bagi para pemandu wisata lokal di dusun Ende baik dari aspek komunikasi lisan dan tulisan. Metode yang digunakan adalah ceramah, diskusi dan tanya jawab, dan game. Dari hasil kegiatan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini dirasakan sangat bermanfaat dalam meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris para pemandu wisata Ende serta memberikan informasi tentang strategi-strategi belajar bahasa Inggris yang menyenangkan dan efektif. Hasil yang diperoleh para peserta diharapkan dapat diterapkan dalam belajar bahasa Inggris secara mandiri agar penguasaan bahasa Inggris mereka semakin baik di masa yang akan datang agar menjadi pemandu wisata yang professional yang dapat bersaing dalam dunia global.
ABSTRACT
This training aims at exploring, describing and implementing the use of English technical terms related to tourism such as the terms concerning social and cultural affairs, history, Economy, and Industry. This study was conducted towards some local guides in Ende, Sengkol, Pujut, Central Lombok by employing strategies such as discussion, role-playing, and games. The result showed that the subjects of the study were enthusiastic in learning English technical terms related to tourism and achieved good understanding on the topic to enhance their mastery on the Tourism related terms for their better professionalism.
The Faculty of Medicine, the University of Mataram, Indonesia, renewed its curriculum to teach English to aide Indonesian university graduates to enter the competitive international job markets. Adopting this new curriculum will affect the provision of teaching and learning activities. This paper attempts to justify whether the use of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) would fit within the current English curriculum. A comprehensive review of a literature was conducted to identify barriers and facilitators for the implementation of CLIL in higher education settings. Results of the literature review were then used to evaluate the potential strengths and limitations of the recently renewed curriculum when implemented at the Faculty of Medicine. Availing of curriculum and learning materials has the potential to sustain CLIL implementation in the Faculty of Medicine. However, factors that may impinge the successful implementation include: lecturers’ language, content pedagogical competences and the need to employ differentiated instructional modules. An ongoing professional development for lecturers prior to curriculum implementation could address these limitations.
Indonesia pernah tercatat sebagai salah satu negara yang melanggar hak kekayaan intelektual yang parah tinggi di dunia. Tahun 2010 berdasarkan survei yang dilakukan oleh Political and Economic Risk Consultancy (PERC), Indonesia adalah pelanggar hak atas kekayaan intelektual terburuk di Asia, berada pada angka 8,5 dari angka maksimum 10 untuk kawasan Asia. Dalam ujian proposal atau ujian tesis di magister Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Mataram pun sering ditemukan indikasi plagiarisme. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilakukan melalui sosialisasi, evaluasi dan pendampingan lanjutan. Khalayak strategis kegiatan ini ialah guru-guru Bahasa Inggris di Lombok yang berstatus mahasiswa Magister Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Mataram. Mitra dan sekaligus coordinator ialah Kepala SMK Taruna Bangsa Sakra Barat dan Mewakili Dinas Dikbud Lombok Timur. Kegiatan ini menghasilkan luaran: 1) Pemahaman dan wawasan yang lebih luas mengenai apa, bagaimana, dampak, dan solusi bagi praktek plagiarisme, 2) Artikel hasil pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang akan dipublikasikan pada JPPM FKIP Universitas Mataram ber-ISSN atau jurnal lain dan dikumpulkan paling lambat 1 tahun setelah kontrak berakhir. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa kegiatan ini berjalan dengan sangat lancar dan mendapat respon yang sangat tinggi dari khalayak sasaran, walau dilaksanakan secara hybrid. Ada keinginan yang kuat dari peserta untuk terus melanjutkan kegiatan, termasuk belajar Turnitin.
