Le présent article propose une analyse rétrospective des rapports entre travail et usage de substances psychoactives. De l’alcoolisme des ouvriers aux beuveries étudiantes dans les Grandes Écoles, jusqu’aux addictions sexuelles des cadres d’entreprise, les différentes formes d’addiction entretiennent souvent des liens intimes avec les contraintes de travail contemporaines. Le plus souvent, elles intègrent un système structuré de conduites qui visent à faire face à la peur et à la souffrance au travail. Dans ce domaine, l’analyse étiologique ne peut donc faire l’impasse sur les contraintes imposées par les nouvelles formes d’organisation du travail au fonctionnement psychique, sous peine de se méprendre sur les mesures préventives à adopter.
