The survey results can be used to develop strategies for increasing influenza vaccination rates.

The National Bariatric Surgery Registry (NBSR) results reflect low perioperative risk for obesity surgery. Five deaths occurred within 40 d of operation in 5178 patients (0.1%). A subset of 3174 patients with complete information for complication and postoperative hospital stay was further studied. Females comprised 87% of the data set. Median values were determined for age, 37 y (18-70 y); operative weight, 121 kg (77-288 kg); and operative body mass index (BMI), 44 kg/m2 (29-91 kg/m2). Patients with no complications (89.7%) were reported to have a median postoperative stay of 4 d (2-23 d). The most severe complications were deep venous thrombosis (0.3%) and gastrointestinal leak (0.6%), with median postoperative hospital stay of 12 d (ranges 2-27 and 4-59 d, respectively). The most frequent complication reported was respiratory (4.5%), with median postoperative stay of 6 d (3-34 d). Median postoperative hospital stay for wound infection (1.6%) was 5 d.

(1) Factors influencing the survival of chickens in the first week of life in Taiwan were identified by modelling data from 63% of the annual national broiler production database (4769 broiler flocks). (2) Broiler chicks raised in rooms with open-curtain ventilation had the lowest mean first week cumulative mortality (CM), 1.30%, relative to those raised in rooms with negative pressure ventilation (1.42%) and water-cooled ventilation (1.37%). Increasing flock size reduced the CM. Broiler chicks shipped distances within 50 km had the lowest CM (1.22%), while broiler chicks raised in mountain areas showed the highest CM (1.65%). (3) Multiple regression analysis results indicate that ventilation type, flock size, shipping distance and delivery route influence CM in broiler chickens. Broiler chicks kept in rooms with negative pressure ventilation have an 11.22% greater CM compared to those in rooms with open-curtain ventilation. For each 1000-chicken increase in flock size, CM is reduced by 0.12%. For each kilometre increase in shipping distance, CM increases by 0.05%. Broiler chicks delivered via mountain routes show a 9.48% increase in CM compared to delivery via flat terrain. (4) Negative pressure ventilation and delivery via mountain routes are the most critical factors affecting the survival of chicks up to one week old.

Noroviruses are a major health burden and are responsible for the majority of outbreaks of gastroenteritis in the world. Human noroviruses can be genetically divided into two main genogroups (GI and GII) and subdivided into many genotypes. In this study, stool specimens collected from 12 outbreaks of gastroenteritis in Taiwan were screened for viral agents between the 23rd of November 2004 and 9th of March 2005. Noroviruses were detected in all outbreaks. We detected six different norovirus genotypes: GI/11, GI/14, GII/3, GII/4, GII/6, and GII/18. Noroviruses belonging to GII/4 were dominant, 50 of 60 (83%) sequences, and were detected in 10 of 12 outbreaks. Furthermore, the norovirus GII/4 strains were detected throughout Taiwan, demonstrating their widespread distribution. We also found that three outbreaks had noroviruses from multiple genotypes. Our results have shown for the first time that noroviruses are an important cause of gastroenteritis in Taiwan.

The consumption of a soup containing B. officinalis Hemsley resulted in dose-related toxic effects. Clinical toxicity consisted primarily of gastrointestinal symptoms and signs and hepatotoxicity. Hepatocellular liver injury rather than cholestatic liver injury was observed. Marked jaundice did not develop.
