Previous studies have indicated positive and negative effects of lean production on employees’ perceived work characteristics and job attitudes. The most detrimental consequence of lean production is a decrease in the perceived job autonomy of workshop employees. To reduce these negative consequences, we propose human resource practices for integration with lean production. Drawing on the job characteristics model, we hypothesized that the implementation of lean production combined with human resource practices would enhance perceived job autonomy, job satisfaction, and operational performance. To evaluate our hypotheses, we used an experimental design consisting of a simulation game that mimics a manufacturing company. We implemented lean production combined with human resource practices in this simulated company. The results indicated a significant increase in perceived job autonomy, job satisfaction, and operational performance. Moreover, the results revealed a positive relationship between job satisfaction and operational performance.
T his article shows the implementation of DM AI C (define, measure, analyze, improve, and control) in an Ecuadorian Snack company. T he company manufactures vegetable snacks f o r exportation. The first trimester of 202, the company receives between one and four complaints from their clients per month because of t h e presence of crumb in the snacks. T he objective of this study is to reduce the percentage of crumb in the snacks to maximum 15 %. Following the DMAIC method, which stands for Define, Measur e, Analyze, Improve, and Control, we collect and analyze qualitativ e and quantitative process data to identify the root causes and def in e an action plan for reducing the crumb. We found 4 root causes an d for each of them an improvement plan was developed consider ing the constraints of the company. After implementing the improvement ideas, the presence of crumb in the snacks was effectively reduced.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the situational and dispositional determinants of job satisfaction in environments created by implementing employee-supportive lean. Design/methodology/approach The research uses a questionnaire to measure the determinants of job satisfaction (perceived job demands, perceived job autonomy and core self-evaluations) and job satisfaction. Afterwards, the paper proposes a conceptual framework and uses hierarchical multiple regression to test the relationships among perceived job demands, perceived job autonomy, core self-evaluations and job satisfaction. Additionally, the study describes the implementation of employee-supportive lean in four small companies using an action research approach. Findings The findings reveal that perceived job demands has a negative impact on job satisfaction. In addition, the authors find that perceived job autonomy and core self-evaluations have a positive impact on job satisfaction. Finally, the results show that core self-evaluations buffer the impact of perceived job demands on job satisfaction. Originality/value The present research underscores the importance of work and personal characteristics for employees’ job satisfaction in an environment created by implementing employee-supportive lean.
Community service projects and activities allow a comprehensive academic training of university students by exposing them to real learning environments. The Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) promotes the development of it´s students´ professional skills through active learning in the form of pre-professional practices. Student training practices were modified as a result of the SARS-CoV-2 virus through the establishment of social distancing as a main bio safety policy. This article shines a light on the experience of the students who carried out community service practices during the social isolation produced by the pandemic. Seventy students participated in the project "Noise pollution in the city of Guayaquil during isolation and reactivation of activities", students used mobile devices to measure the noise level of the city of Guayaquil from their homes. The results of this study indicate a high efficacy of the use of virtual technologies future community service projects. For this reason, it is suggested to consider this type of practice in future community service projects in virtual mode.
Abstract-This article presents the utilization of problem-based (PBL) learning to develop soft and hard skills among university students. The problem that faced the students was the inefficient way of dealing with waste in the High school Luis Enrique Morales Alfaro of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Students and teachers applied (PBL) to solve the problem. The results show significant increments in the soft skills of communication and teamwork of the students. Abstract-This paper documents the implementation ofManufacturing Best Practices in a Home Cleaning Chemicals production facility as part of a university study in which professors and students apply their knowledge to benefit the community. The first step was to apply BMPs to determine a work plan and how to then implement those ideas for improvement. Abstract-This article presents the implementation of Good Manufacturing Practices in a chemistry products factory as part of a university project in which teachers and students apply their knowledge in benefit of the community. A GMP initial diagnostic was performed followed by an action plan and the implementation of improvement initiatives.
