Two Bacillus species were studied which produced bioemulsifiers; however, they were distinctly different compounds. Bacillus sp. strain IAF 343 produced unusually high yields of extracellular biosurfactant when grown on a medium containing only water-soluble substrates. The yield of g/liter was appreciably better than those of most of the biosurfactants reported previously. This neutral lipid product, unlike most lipid biosurfactants, had significant emulsifying properties. It did not appreciably lower the surface tension of water. On the same medium, Bacillus cereus IAF 346 produced a more conventional polysaccharide bioemulsifier, but it also produced a monoglyceride biosurfactant. The bioemulsifier contained substantial amounts of glucosamine and originated as part of the capsule layer. The monoglyceride lowered the surface tension of water to 28 mN/m. It formed a strong association with the polysaccharide, and it was necessary to use ultrafiltration to effect complete separation. The removal of the monoglyceride caused the polysaccharide to precipitate. It is suggested that earlier reports of biopolymers which both stabilized emulsions and lowered surface tension were actually similar aggregates of lipid and bioemulsifier. Both the lowering of the surface tension of water and the stabilization of oil and water emulsions can be accomplished by using biological materials. A large variety of biosurfactants have been reported (3, 8, 16, 20, 23). In fact, any lipid probably has some degree of surface activity (3; D. G. Cooper and B. G. Goldenberg, Appl. Environ. Microbiol., submitted for publication). Most lipids are minor components of a cell, however. To have commercial potential as a biosurfactant, a lipid must be produced in high yield to reduce cost and must be excreted into the medium to facilitate efficient product recovery (2, 3, 7). Most of the bioemulsifiers that have been characterized have been polymeric, usually polysaccharides (1, 3, 16, 19, 20, 24; Cooper and Goldenberg, submitted). Several polymeric biosurfactants have been reported to both stabilize emulsions and significantly lower surface tension (8, 17, 20, 22). It is possible, however, that further fractionation of the crude products would isolate different components that are responsible for each activity (17; Cooper and Goldenberg, submitted).

People convey their emotional state in their face and voice. We present an audio-visual data set uniquely suited for the study of multi-modal emotion expression and perception. The data set consists of facial and vocal emotional expressions in sentences spoken in a range of basic emotional states (happy, sad, anger, fear, disgust, and neutral). 7,442 clips of 91 actors with diverse ethnic backgrounds were rated by multiple raters in three modalities: audio, visual, and audio-visual. Categorical emotion labels and real-value intensity values for the perceived emotion were collected using crowd-sourcing from 2,443 raters. The human recognition of intended emotion for the audio-only, visual-only, and audio-visual data are 40.9%, 58.2% and 63.6% respectively. Recognition rates are highest for neutral, followed by happy, anger, disgust, fear, and sad. Average intensity levels of emotion are rated highest for visual-only perception. The accurate recognition of disgust and fear requires simultaneous audio-visual cues, while anger and happiness can be well recognized based on evidence from a single modality. The large dataset we introduce can be used to probe other questions concerning the audio-visual perception of emotion.

The lipopeptide, surfactin, is produced by Bacillus subtilis. A study has been made on large-scale production of this surfactant. A good yield was obtained from a glucose substrate fermentation by continuously removing the product by foam fractionation. The surfactin could be easily recovered from the collapsed foam by acid precipitation. The yield was also improved by the addition of either iron or manganese salts. Hydrocarbon addition to the medium, which normally increases biosurfactant production, completely inhibited surfactin production by B. subtilis.

SYNOPSISThe hydrolytic depolymerization of molten P E T in excess water was studied using a 2 L stirred pressure reactor at temperatures of 250,265, and 280°C. Rate constants for hydrolysis are calculated from the initial rate data. At initial water : PET charge ratios (w/w) exceeding 5.1, essentially complete depolymerization to monomer is possible at 265°C. At lower water: PET initial charges, an equilibrium is established. The equilibrium constants are calculated for 2 g water/g PET at three temperatures. A kinetic model is proposed to describe the hydrolysis reaction. The model is shown to fit experimental data and to yield good predictions for the equilibrium concentration of carboxyl groups. Carboxyl-group concentrations are measured using an end-group analysis technique. Potentiometric titrations are carried out in one of two solvent systems, dimethylpheno1:chloroform or dimethylsulfoxide, depending on the extent of hydrolysis. 0 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The effect of surfactants on the heterogeneous enzymatic hydrolysis of Sigmacell 100 cellulose and of steam-exploded wood was studied. Certain biosurfactants (sophorolipid, rhamnolipid, bacitracin) and Tween 80 increased the rate of hydrolysis of Sigmacell 100, as measured by the amount of reducing sugar produced, by as much as seven times. The hydrolysis of steam-exploded wood was increased by 67% in the presence of sophorolipid. At the same time, sophorolipid was found to decrease the amount of enzyme adsorbed onto the cellulose at equilibrium. Sophorolipid had the greatest effect on cellulose hydrolysis when it was present from the beginning of the experiment and when the enzyme/cellulose ratio was low.

The risk of neurologic complications is increased after coverage of the LSA during TEVAR. Preemptive revascularization offers no protection against CVA, perhaps indicating a heterogeneous etiology. Revascularization may reduce the risk of SCI, although limited data tempers this conclusion. Improved or perhaps compulsory reporting to registries of a minimum data set may help further assess the exact etiology of these complications and identify a higher-risk subset of patients in whom revascularization might prove protective.

Remote preconditioning reduces urinary biomarkers of renal injury in patients undergoing elective EVAR. This small pilot trial was unable to detect an effect on clinical endpoints; further trials are warranted.
