The question discussed in the two following experiments concerns the effect of facial expressions on face recognition. Famous and unknown faces with neutral or smiling expression were presented for different inspection durations (15 ms vs 1000 ms). Subjects had to categorize these faces as famous or unknown (Experiment 1), or estimate their degree of familiarity on a rating scale (Experiment 2). Results showed that the smile increased ratings of familiarity for unfamiliar faces (Experiments 1 and 2) and for famous faces (Experiment 2). These data are discussed in the framework of current face-recognition models and are interpreted in terms of social value of the smile. It is proposed that the smiling bias found here acts at the level of the decision process.
The two studies reported here confirmed the role of the attributor's hierarchical level in causal attributions about accidents in different types of organizations. In both studies, supervisors vs. subordinates had to analyze a minor work accident vs. a serious one. The first study used male vs. female subjects, whereas the second compared the target's position in the same (in‐group) vs. different (out‐group) hierarchical level as the attributor. In all cases, more internal attributions than external ones were given to explain the accident. These results demonstrate a tendency toward defensive attribution, whereby people tend to protect themselves or their group from blame or prejudice (Shaver, 1970a). This self‐protective attribution bias was found to increase with accident severity, particularly in Study 2. The conclusion offers some suggestions for accident analysis and prevention.
Four studies investigated the value granted to internal versus external causal attributions of events in the workplace. The results showed that (a) managers provided more internal explanations when they were asked to present a favorable self-image, and (b) managers favored targets ( job applicants) who had expressed internal rather than external explanations. The results also showed that not all internal explanations are valued equally: "efforts" are preferred over "traits" in explanations of job outcomes. The results are discussed in terms of a norm that regulates social judgments: the norm of internality.
Fatigue in Crohn's disease (CD) is considered as a consequence of the disease and its treatment. If research showed the impact of the activity of the disease on vitality, patients can express fatigue even if the disease is inactive. Sleep disturbances are now considered in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and they could be involved in fatigue. It is well-known that depression and anxiety occur in IBD: They involve sleep disturbances and asthenia. But neither factors have been assessed simultaneously from a longitudinal perspective. Fifty-two patients participated in this study. Fatigue (MFI), depression (HAD-D), anxiety (HAD-A), sleep disturbances (ISI, IQPS), subjective quality of life (Mos-SF36) and activity of the disease (CDAI) were assessed twice with a one-year interval. Results showed constancy in fatigue and the mental health state. Moreover, if depression, anxiety, quality of life, and fatigue followed the same course of activity of the disease only during one visit, CDAI did not correlate with these dimensions between visits. CDAI only prognosticated insomnia. These results suggest that fatigue and poor quality of life may be primarily linked to depression in a secondary context of CD.
In order to improve vitality in IBD patients in remission, identification and treatment of psychological aspects should become a dimension of disease management. Fatigue should not be considered only as a direct feature of IBD.
