Objective: to investigate the use of drugs, potential drug interactions and iatrogenesis, as factors associated with frailty. Method: an observational, cross-sectional, population-based study of elderly persons registered with the Family Health Strategies of the urban area of a municipal region in the south of Brazil was carried out. The sample was probabilistic and involved 554 elderly persons; and the proportional stratified sampling technique by FHS and gender was used. Data collection was performed in the home, with the gathering of information regarding sociodemographic characteristics and pharmacotherapeutic profile and the evaluation of frailty based on Fried et al. (2001). Results: medications were taken by 86.3% of the elderly and there was a prevalence of frailty of 63.0%. A total of 39.4% of the elderly were exposed to polypharmacy, 49.1% used potentially inappropriate medications and 52.2% were exposed to potential drug interactions, the most frequent being enalapril and metformin. An association between increased risk of frailty and the variables: polypharmacy; use of potentially inappropriate medications; potential drug interactions; more than two potential drug interactions with the presence or absence of potentially inappropriate medication was identified. Conclusion: an association was found between frailty and polypharmacy, the use of potentially inappropriate medication and the presence of drug interactions. The findings underscore the importance of the monitoring of drug therapy in this population group with a view to the early detection, prevention and resolution of iatrogenesis arising from the use of medicines.

Methods: A qualitative and quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted. The data were collected through the analysis of medical charts and prescriptions of elderly individuals from a long-stay institution in Ijuí, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The convenience sample included all the elderly individuals institutionalized during the data collection period (September 2015). Results: Of the 30 institutionalized elderly individuals, 29 were using continuous medication with a mean of 8.72±2.56 medicines per individual, totaling 91 different drugs. Twenty-eight (93.3%) individuals used five or more medicines, which indicates polypharmacy among most of the elderly residents. The most commonly used medicines were for the nervous system (35.07%), digestive system and metabolism (31.52%), and cardiovascular system (20.1%). Forty-one (45.05%) drugs could potentially interact with foods, totaling 142 interactions. Potential interactions were verified in all elderly individuals, ranging from two to eight, averaging 4.89±2.00 interactions per elderly. Caffeine was involved in most interactions, potentially interacting with nine (21.95%) different medications, five (12.19%) of which acted on the nervous system. Conclusions: There was a high frequency of polypharmacy among the institutionalized elderly and medicines to treat nervous system conditions were the most common ones. Several potential interactions between drugs and some types of foods/nutrients were verified.
Palavras-chave: Atenção Primária a Saúde. ABSTRACT: Introduction: As a result of the Brazilian epidemiological transition, cancer is currently a public health problem due to its high morbidity and mortality. Objective: To verify the knowledge and preventive practices related to oncological diseases in climacteric women attached to the Family Health Strategy (FHS). Method: The research followed an analytical cross-sectional design. The population was consituted of women aged between 35 and 65 years with an active registry in the Family Health Strategy units of the urban area of a medium-sized municipality in the northwest region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A total of 197 women were selected from the database of the research "Female Aging", who answered the questionnaire. Results and discussion: The average age of the women was 51.22 ± 7.71 years. It was observed that family income and schooling have an association with the level of knowledge about cancer and its causes. Regarding the factors that cause cancer, 85.8% (169) reported knowing at least one cause; 34.5% (68) stated that the health team addresses the issue of cancer; 69.5% (137) regularly performed breast self-exam and 96.4% (190) had already performed the Papanicolaou test at some point. Knowledge about cancer and its early detection exams is directly proportional to motivation in relation to health care. Conclusion: The findings of the study show that users have information about cancer and its risk factors; however, it is necessary that health professionals work so that information becomes knowledge capable of changing attitudes and behaviors of users. Keywords: Primary Health Care.
Considering that postmenopausal women generally have high levels of oxidative markers and low levels of antioxidant defense markers due to the reduction of estrogen levels, and because of the vast popular use of several species of carja in the form of infusion, this study aimed to evaluate in vitro if infusions of B. trimera and B. articulata have antioxidant potential in erythrocytes of postmenopausal women and which are the most effective. The erythrocytes from 40 postmenopausal women were treated in vitro for 1 hour with infusions of B. trimera and B. articulata at the following concentrations: 4, 8, 16, 33, 66 g/L. The negative control consisted of erythrocytes from postmenopausal women without treatment with the plants. After treatment, the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), carbonylated proteins (CP), and reduced glutathione (GSH) were measured. The infusions of B. trimera and B. articulata at concentrations of 33 (p<0.001) and 66 g/L (p<0.001) reduced the level of TBARS in comparison to the negative control, and the effect size (ES) for this reduction was small. The levels of GSH increased after treating with B. trimera infusion at a concentration of 66 (p<0.001) and with B. articulata at concentrations of 33 (p<0.001) and 66 g/L (p<0.001), when compared with the negative control, and the ES for this increase was average. The infusions of B. trimera and B. articulata show antioxidant potential in vitro, thus showing a similar effect with regards to the reduction of oxidative damage to lipids and increased endogenous antioxidant protection.
Objective: Analyzing "in vitro" the antioxidant activity of the lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus Stapf) over markers of oxidative stress in erythrocytes of women on postmenopausal period. Method: Total blood with anticoagulant has been collected from 28 women on postmenopausal. The plasma was discarded. The diluted erythrocyte on 5% with saline and divided in 5 groups of treatment: Group 0: erythrocytes without treatment; Group 5, 10, 25 and 50 erythrocytes treated respectively with 5, 10, 25 and 50 g/L of infusion of lemon grass, in water bath on 37°C for 1 hour. After this period the erythrocytes were hemolysated in vortex and on the supernatant were evaluated the level of the Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS), Carbonylated Proteins (PCs) and of the Reduced Glutathione (GSH). Results: There were no significant alterations on the PCs levels of the studied groups. However the TBARS levels got reduced on the group 25 and the GSH levels got increased on the group 50. Conclusion: These results indicate that the lemon grass seems to be an effective antioxidant agent when it's used in infusions with concentration of 25 and 50 g/L.
