Termos para indexação: Vigna unguiculata L., salinidade, germinação, crescimento e estresse oxidativo. viABiLiTY AND ANTioXiDANT ACTiviTY iN SEEDS oF CoWPEAGENoTYPES SUBMiTTED To SALT STRESSABSTRACT -This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different salt concentrations on the germination, initial biomass and oxidative stress of four cowpea genotypes, commonly grown in the São José do Norte region, RS.
-Thiamethoxam is a systemic insecticide that is transported within the plant through its cells and can activate various physiological reactions such as protein expression. These proteins interact with defense mechanisms against stress in adverse growing conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of thiamethoxam in rice seeds and the potential benefits that it can provide. Two experiments were carried out and, in both, seeds were treated with commercial product containing 350 g of thiamethoxam active ingredient per liter of product, at doses 0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mL.100 kg -1 of seeds: 1) it was conducted with three lots of IRGA BR 424 cultivar rice seeds, which were submitted to the following laboratory tests: germination, cold test, accelerated aging test, as well as field assessment: total seedling length, root system length, number of panicles and productivity; 2) four lots of IRGA BR 424 cultivar rice seeds, two high and two low-vigor, were subjected to the following tests: germination, cold test and greenhouse seedling emergence test. Thiamethoxam rice seed treatment positively favors the seed quality.
-The goal of storage is to maintain the characteristics that seeds have immediately after processing; however, when this is over longer periods, storage may cause loss in quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of treatment with insecticide and fungicide on corn seeds harvested in kernel form and in the ear over the time of storage in two environments for 360 days. The seeds were subjected to the following treatments: T1 -control; T2 -Deltamethrin + Pirimiphosmethyl + Fludioxonil; T3 -Deltamethrin + Pirimiphos-methyl + Fludioxonil + Thiamethoxam; T4 -Thiamethoxam, and T5 -Fenitrothion. They were then placed in paper bags and stored in two environments, in a cold room with an average temperature of 16 °C and RH of 60% and in a non-controlled environment (an average room temperature of 25 ºC and RH of 70%) located in the municipality of Pelotas, RS, Brazil. Every four months (0, 120, 240 and 360 days), seed germination and vigor was evaluated by the first count of germination test and cold test. Reduction in germination and vigor of corn seeds, conditioned by the insecticides and fungicide used in the seed treatment, vary according to the product and the time over which the seeds remain stored. The seeds harvested in the ear show lower loss of physiological quality than those harvested in kernel form.Index terms: Zea mays L., germination, vigor, seed treatment.
-This study aimed to verify the effect of seeds treated with thiamethoxam on the emergence, growth and chlorophyll content of seedlings of two cotton cultivars subjected to abiotic stress. The seeds used were from the DeltaOpal and NuOpal cultivars, each one represented by three lots, previously subjected to determination of moisture content, germination and vigor (low temperature germination). Then, the seeds from each lot, treated with thiamethoxam at a dose of 600 mL of product per 100 kg -1 seed or not, were exposed to temperature (18, 25 and 35 °C) and water availability (40, 60 and 80%) stress conditions. The emergence percentage, the root and shoot length, and the chlorophyll content were evaluated. The growth of cotton seedlings from the DeltaOpal and NuOpal cultivars, subjected to low temperature conditions and water availability of 40 to 60%, is favored by seed treatment with thiamethoxam. Seed treatment with thiamethoxam increases chlorophyll content during the development of cotton plants.Index terms: bioactivator, chlorophyll, Gossypium hirsutum L., stress. Seeds are a very important input for crops, and the use of low quality seeds and/or inadequate management affects the germination and hampers seedling emergence, which reduces the plant stand. There is a critical need for the development of rapid methods, which are both reliable and easy to perform, for evaluating the physiological potential of seeds. This would streamline the decision-making process regarding the management of lots and allow for the identification of seed lots of inadequate quality in the seed processing unit, which could then be discarded, and would consequently result in reduced costs associated with unnecessary processing. However, it is important that these methods are low cost and quick to perform. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation of respiratory activity of wheat seed, through Pettenkofer test, with tests that evaluate seeds physiological quality. We selected a seed lot of high physiological quality, then subjected the seeds to adverse temperature and relative humidity conditions to obtain different vigor levels. The adverse conditions used were 42ºC and 100% relative humidity, for periods of 6, 36, 66 and 96 hours. This process obtained seeds of five vigor levels which were subjected to the following tests: germination, field emergence, electrical conductivity, shoot and root length, total dry mass and respiratory activity. The results showed a negative correlation between respiratory activity and germination, emergence, shoot and root length and dry weight, whereas germination and emergence were strongly correlated with respiratory activity, r = -0.86 and r = -0.81, respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between conductivity and respiratory activity. Therefore, the respiratory activity test using the Pettenkofer method was correlated with other vigor tests, and allowed the classification of wheat seeds into lots of different levels of quality.
