Treatment of rice seeds with thiamethoxam: reflections on physiological performance

Abstract: -Thiamethoxam is a systemic insecticide that is transported within the plant through its cells and can activate various physiological reactions such as protein expression. These proteins interact with defense mechanisms against stress in adverse growing conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of thiamethoxam in rice seeds and the potential benefits that it can provide. Two experiments were carried out and, in both, seeds were treated with commercial product containing 350 g of thiame… Show more

“…The taller soybean plants obtained with the thiamethoxam application might be due to the effect of the thiamethoxam molecule, which plays the role of a growth regulator (Macedo & e Castro 2011). Similar results were also found in previous studies, for instance, the seed treatment with thiamethoxam increased the plant height of cotton and okra (Preetha & Stanley 2012), rice (Almeida et al 2014a; Hum- (Almeida et al 2014b). Soybean seed treatment with thiamethoxam also enhanced the seedling vigour (Dhungana et al 2016).…”

“…Maron et al (2011) showed that these fungicides do not affect plant growth and survival, except through their action on pests. Although Thiamethoxam has been found to increase the vigor of certain crop species, especially in relation to environmental stressors like drought [for example in Almeida et al (2014)], there is no evidence that it affects seedling survival.…”

“…Almeida et al (2014b), when treating seeds with thiamethoxam and lambdacyhalotrin, reported an increase in germination, especially when seeds were submitted to temperatures between 10 and 13 ºC. Thiamethoxan also optimized seed performance (Almeida et al, 2014a).…”
