Two trials were conducted to determine Na+ and Cl- nutritional requirements and dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) and its effects on acid-base balance, litter moisture, and incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) in broiler chickens during the growing period. Cobb broilers were distributed in a completely randomized design (30 pens) with six treatments, five replicates, and 50 birds per experimental unit at 21 d of age. Treatments used in both trials were a basal diet with 0.10% Na+ (Trial 1) or Cl- (Trial 2) supplemented to result in diets with Na+ or Cl- levels of 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, and 0.35%. In the first trial, the results indicated an optimum Na+ requirement of 0.15%. The Na+ levels, obtained with supplemental NaHCO3, did not affect blood gas parameters and TD incidence. Litter moisture increased linearly with Na+ levels. In the second trial, the Cl- requirement was estimated at 0.23%. Increasing Cl- levels, provided by NaCl with NaHCO3 to balance Na+, caused a linear effect (P < or = 0.01) on blood gas parameters, with an estimated equilibrium at 0.19% dietary Cl-. No effect (P > or = 0.05) of Cl- levels on litter moisture was observed. The hypertrophic area of growth plate in the proximal tibiotarsus increased with Cl- levels (P < or = 0.001). A nonlinear model describes this response. The best dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) was between 250 to 261 mEq/kg in Trial 1 and 249 to 257 mEq/kg in Trial 2. We concluded that the Na+ requirement was 0.15%, and the Cl- requirement was 0.23% for maximum performance of growing chickens between 21 and 42 d of age, and the best DEB was between 249 and 261 mEq/kg.
-The milk/solid feed intake pattern and digestive capacity were compared in two groups of young rabbits reared between 16 and 32 days in litters of four (L4 group, n = 18 litters) or ten pups (L10, n = 20) in order to modulate milk availability. Compared to the L4 group, rabbits in the LIO group presented a lower milk intake (22.3 versus 28.8 g-day-1 ) and a higher solid feed intake (12.9 versus 8.0 g-day-1 ) between 16 and 32 days of age. Live weight and weight gain were significantly lower in the L10 (-15 %) than in the L4 group from 22 until 42 days. No significant difference was observed among the two groups for post-weaning digestibility and for the intraluminal specific or total activities of amylase and maltase. The total intraluminal activity (pool of enzyme) of amylase and maltase doubled between weaning (32 days) and 42 days. At weaning, the specific activity of amylase was similar in the jejunal and ileal segments (8.5 AU-g-1 ). From 32 to 42 days, the specific amylase activity doubled in the jejunum, while it remained steady in the ileum. The intraluminal specific maltase activity did not significantly change between 32 and 42 days, while it was twice as high in the jejunum compared to the ileum (3.5 versus 1.8 pmoles hydrolysed maltosei-g-1 , respectively
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the interaction between genetic group (Botucatu or crossbred) and ambient temperature (thermoneutral, moderate or intense heat stress) on physiological indicators and performance of growing rabbits. Ninety-six weaned rabbits were used, half from the Botucatu genetic group and half crossbreds (New Zealand White males× Botucatu females). They were assigned to a completely randomized design in a 2× 3 factorial arrangement (two genetic groups and three ambient temperatures) with repeated measures (weeks). Colonic temperature, skin surface temperature, ear surface temperature, and respiratory rate were recorded from 42 to 67 days of age, whereas body weight and feed intake were recorded from 35 to 70 days of age. Average ambient temperature and relative humidity in the environmental chambers were 18.4°C and 63.9% (thermoneutral), 24.4°C and 80.2% (moderate heat stress) and 29.6°C and 75.9% (intense heat stress). Mean colonic temperatures ranged from 39.4 to 39.7°C across treatments. Botucatu rabbits showed higher (Pb 0.05) skin surface temperature under moderate heat stress than the crossbreds (33.0±0.1 vs. 32.6±0.1°C, respectively) and higher (Pb 0.01) respiratory rates independently of ambient temperature (161.4±2.8 vs. 148.1±2.8 breaths/min, respectively) than the crossbreds. Skin surface temperature, ear surface temperature and respiratory rate were positively related to ambient temperature. Under intense heat, average daily gain of Botucatu rabbits was higher (Pb 0.05) than that of the crossbreds (33.72±0.90 vs. 30.66±0.96 g/day, respectively), but there was no difference with thermoneutral or moderate heat conditions. This finding characterizes a genotype× environment interaction. When the age effect was considered, an increase in colonic temperature under intense heat was detected over the last week. Respiratory rate increased in both genetic groups from six to eight weeks of age, but the increase was more pronounced in Botucatu rabbits than in crossbreds, and the difference between groups was consistently amplified over weeks. Intense heat severely depressed average daily gain as age advanced, especially beyond week eight. As expected, feed consumption increased during the experimental period, but the rate was inversely proportional to ambient temperature. Under intense heat stress, feed consumption of Botucatu rabbits was slightly, but consistently, higher than that of the crossbreds as age advanced. Relevant differences in physiological responses and growth performance between rabbit genetic groups under heat stress were detected.
Palavras-chave: desempenho, farelo de girassol, frangos de corte Use of Sunflower Meal in Broiler Chicks FeedingABSTRACT -A trial was carried out to evaluate the broiler chicks performance fed with increasing sunflower meal levels. A total of 1200 one-day-old chicks were allotted in a completely randomized design with six treatments, four replicates and 50 birds by experimental unit. The treatments consisted on a corn, soybean meal based control diet (RT) and five others with 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% of soybean meal protein replacement by sunflower meal protein. A quadratic effect of the sunflower meal levels on feed gain at initial phase, on feed intake and average weight gain at growing phase and on weight gain at total period were observed. In isoenergetic and isoaminoacid diets for digestible methionine+cystine and lysine, the soybean meal protein can be replaced by the sunflower meal protein up to 30% level, which corresponds to nearly 15% of sunflower meal inclusion in the broiler chicks diets.
Palavras-chave: Cajanus cajan, epitélio intestinal, fatores antinutricionais, frangos de corte, Leucaena cunningan e leucocephala Influence of Antinutritional Factors of Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala and Leucaena cunningan) and Pigeous Bean (Cajanus cajan) on the Intestinal Epithelium and Performance of Broiler ChickensABSTRACT -A trial was conducted to evaluate the influence of antinutritional factors in some feedstuffs on broiler chick's performance and intestinal epithelium. A total of 480 one-day old broiler chicks were allotted to a completely randomized experimental design with four treatments (A= corn and soybean meal based control diet; B = diet containing Leucaena leucocephala -6% [LL]; C = diet containing Leucaena cunningan -6% [LC] and D = diet containing Pigeous bean -Cajanus cajan -20% [CC]), four replicates and 30 broiler chicks per experimental unit. The broiler chicks, which were fed with LL and LC containing diets showed lower weight gain and a worse feed: gain in the periods from 1 to 21 and from 1 to 42 days of age. At 21 st days of age only the broiler chicks fed with LC containing diet showed a higher villi size in jejunum and villi: crypt ratio in jejunum and ileum. There was significant increase on the number of Goblet cells in the duodenum and jejunum in the broiler chicks of all treatments at the 21 st day of age, and only broiler chicks fed with LL and LC containing diets showed an increased number of Goblet cells in the ileum. At 42 th day of age, an increase of Goblet cells was observed in the duodenum of broiler chicks fed with CC containing diets, and in the ileum of broiler chicks fed with LL, ...
Palavras-chave: composição química, desempenho, digestibilidade, valor energético Nutritive Value and Performance of Growing Rabbits Fed RationsContaining Extruded Corn ABSTRACT -Two experiments were carried out, w ith the aim of evaluating the use of corn processed or not by extrusion, in the feeding of growing rabbits.
