AbstractThe purpose of this study is to evaluate pre-service classroom teachers' self-efficacy beliefs in terms of several variables. In this study, the sub-dimensions of self-efficacy beliefs are "student participation", "teaching strategies" and "classroom management". This study aims determining pre-service classroom teachers' feeling of sufficiency in these sub dimensions. The research is a mix design model using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. The quantitative data of the study is collected by using "Teacher Self Efficacy Beliefs Scale" which was translated to Turkish by Çapa, Çakıroğlu and Sarıkaya (2005). Self-efficacy reports teacher candidates prepared are used to collect qualitative data. The sample of this study consists of 32 female (72.7 %) and 12 male (27.3 %) students enrolled at Ege University Faculty of Education, Department of Elementary Education, Classroom Education Program. As a conclusion, it was found that preservice classroom teachers feel very competent in sub-dimensions of "student participation" and "teaching strategies". On the other hand, the sub dimension of the self-efficacy level of "classroom management" has been lower companing to other dimensions. Furthermore, the analyses showed that there are not any significant difference between self-efficacy beliefs of males and females at both total and sub-scale levels. Quantitative findings are supported by qualitative data.
This study focused on prospective teachers' leisure behaviors. For this purpose, 47 fourth grade undergraduate students in Faculty of Education in Ege University, Izmir, Turkey participated. A qualitative research design was used in the study. In the process of analysing the data, Greimas'Actant Model as one of the analysing models in Semiology was utilized. This model has been used for the first time in Turkey as an analytical tool applied in leisure literature. It is based on the logical relationships to disaggregate an action into six Actant components. The interview technique assessed the individuals. Miles and Huberman's measurements were used for reliability and validity, and the conformity was found to be 89%. The results of this research study (1) suggest a primary leisure participation in Turkey within the traditional norms and values of society, and (2) within it, the traditional differentiating role for gender.
The aim of this study was to raise the awareness of preschool teacher candidates within the framework of media literacy the importance of which has been noticed recently in Turkey and which has attracted attention of academic circles as a research topic. In addition, by providing opportunities for preschool candidates to design materials on this topic, it also aimed to help them practice what they know and internalize the information they would obtain on media literacy. In this regard, the article introduces the notice board practices of media literacy theme performed by teacher candidates for preschool students and their parents. Teacher candidates made their own choices on designing notice boards either for children or for their parents. Encouraging candidates to design such notice boards and to use them in training and then in their professional life is extremely important for them both to discover their own creativity and to develop their hand skills. Moreover, dealing with the media literacy theme and expecting them to develop materials by informing the candidates on this issue is a step taken towards raising the awareness of teacher candidates who will educate future generations. From this point of view, it could be recommended to provide practices on board and material development and use within the framework of media literacy theme through in-service seminars for teachers currently continuing their professional life; and to share functional teaching materials among teachers on various platforms (conferences, congress, workshops etc.).
The purpose of this study is to determine the perception of teachers by 10 year-old primary school childrens by the metaphors they developed. The sample covers totally 441 children [224 females (50.8%) and 217 males (49.2%)] living in Izmir, Turkey. Participants were asked to complete the prompt "Teacher is like…, because…''. In identifying their perceptions, the qualitative research model (Holloway & Wheeler, 2002) was utilized, which contributes to the investigation of the individual's perceptions, feelings, and experiences within the framework of Phenomenological design. At the end of the research female students produced 52 metaphors, and males did 44 for teacher images. However, 7 metaphors were commonly created by both genders. They were categorized in 8 conceptual themes. The children's perceptions of "teacher" were clustered especially in the conceptual theme of Family Member (25%) and Warm-hearted Person (8%), with emotional and relational feelings which can be explained by the children's attachment relations (Sabol & Pianta, 2012), that are similar for their families and their teachers. Gender was found to be significantly related with the images of teachers.
The Present cross-sectional survey study aims to examine, through a SEM approach, the relationship among self-efficacy perceptions for 21st century skills, teaching skills use and educational technology use of teachers. 438 Turkish primary school teachers participated in the study. A SEM approach revealed that Educational technology use is a significant predictor of 21st century teaching skills (TS) and self-efficacy perceptions of teachers for 21st century skills. Also, 21st century teaching skills (TS) are a significant predictor of self-efficacy perceptions for 21st century skills (SEP). Moreover, Educational technology use and 21st century teaching skills are significant predictors of self-efficacy perceptions for 21st century skills. It is considered that the results can contribute to studies regarding 21st century skills of primary school teachers and use of instructional technology.
