Beside as seed dispersal and high valued plant pollinator, frugivorous bat (Pteripodidae) also has a role as reservoir of Leptospira. This study was aimed to survey the the prevalence of Leptospira among Pteripodidae in three regencies of Central Java Province namely Purworejo, Pati and Pekalongan, and their potential as reservoir of Leptospira. This study used four mist nets and a harp trap to collect bat at each site of each regency which has six sites. The caught bats were identified morphologically and followed by serological examination by Microscopic Aglutinasion Test (MAT). A total of 278 Pteripodidae was examined by MAT consisting of five genera with eight species. The result of MAT for Leptospira showed that there are no examined bats were positif (0%). It indicated there is no sufficient evidence that Pteripodidae as potential reservoir of Leptospira in Central Java.
Abstract Leptospirosis is an endemic zoonotic disease and remains a health problem in Indonesia. The word’s third-heighest cases of leptospirosis. This study aimed to determine the type of mouse as an intermediate transmission of leptospirosis disease in Minahasa District, North Sulawesi. Trapping of rats was performed by using 100 mouse traps (live Trap) for two consecutive days across six ecosystems. Rats were identified by external morphological characteristics. Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) were conducted using rat kidney samples. The number of rats caught in the present study was 105 heads consisting of six species e.g Rattus tanezumi, Rattus exulans, Rattus hoffmanni, Bunomis coelestis, Bunomis fratorum, and Paruromys dominator. The proportion of rats identified as MAT-based leptospirosis reservoir was 0.9% while the PCR test was 1.9%. Rattus tanezumi identified as leptospirosis reservoirs were found were found in the NHDP (non forest near to sattlement) ecosystem. Rattus tanezumi trapped near the settlement was positive as leptospirosis reservoirs in the Minahasa District.
Rats are animal reservoirs and harbours of several zoonotic pathogens diseases in humans. At least, there are 68 viruses of zoonotic agents that can be transmitted by rats. Two common types of viruses attackinghumans are Hepatitis E virus (HEV) and Hantavirus. Early detection of those viruses is fundamentally required in order to prevent disease transmissions to humans. The aim of the study was to detect and count the percentage of rats infected by HEV and Hantavirus in Kendal and Klaten Districts, Central Java Province. The research design used in this study was descriptive design with cross-sectional approach. The target population was rats distributed in Klaten and Kendal Districts. In addition, the research subject was trapped rats. Detection of Hantavirus was carried out using ELISA method and detection of HEV was conducted using nested reverse transcription PCR (nested RT-PCR). A total of 73 rats was successfully captured consisting of 2 genus and 4 species e.g. Rattus novergicus, R. tanezumi, R. tiomanicus and Bandicota indica. The trapped rats infected by HEV were 3.7% and 41.3% for Klaten and Kendal, respectively. However, the seropositive of Hantavirus was only found in Kendal District (20.5%). Rat control is necessary to prevent transmission of HEV and Hantavirus.
Bats are known as reservoirs of more than 60 zoonoses, one of which is Lyssavirus. Lyssavirus is a zoonotic disease with a case fatality rate of 100% and endemic in 72 countries, including Indonesia. This study aims to determine the confirmed species of bats as Lyssavirus reservoirs in Bali Province. Bats are collected in remote forest ecosystems and settlements, remote and non-forested settlements, and distant beaches and settlements, in Jembrana, Badung, and Karangasem Regencies. The individual number of bats caught were 378, consisting of 14 genera and 24 species. PCR examination results showed three samples confirmed positive Lyssavirus, these were species of Tylonycteris robustula species in Jembrana district, Aethalops alecto in Karangasem Regency, and Cynopterus brachyotis in Badung Regency.
