Denture plate materials such as acrylic resin can induce adhesion of Candida albicans. Therefore, acrylic resin needs to be immersed in disinfectant. However, disinfectant can change its physical and mechanical properties, hence an alternative material is needed, such as hibiscus flower (Hibiscus rosa sinensis L.) due to its antifungal activity. This study was aimed to identify the effects of hibiscus flower extract and its concentrations towards the growth of C. albicans on acrylic resin plates. This was an experimental and laboratory study using the post-test only with control group design. Acrylic resins were immersed in suspension of C. albicans, then were divided into four groups, as follows: 62.5% and 75% hibiscus flower extract (group I and II), positive control (sodium hypochlorite), and negative control (sterile aquadest). Acrylic resins were cultured and incubated on SDA media for 24 hours then the number of colonies were calculated. The results showed that C. albicans colonies in the treatment groups I, II, negative control, and positive control were 495 CFU/ml, 571.25 CFU/mL, 1175 CFU/mL, 23.125 CFU/mL respective-ly. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed significant differences in number of colonies of C. albicans (p<0.05) among all groups The post hoc Mann-Whitney test showed that all groups were significantly different, except for treatment groups I towards II. In conclusion, extract of hibiscus flower (H. rosa sinensis L.) affected the growth of C. albicans on acrylic resin plates. Keywords: hibiscus flower; Hibiscus rosa sinensis L.; Candida albicans; acrylic resin Abstrak: Adanya bahan plat basis gigi tiruan seperti resin akrilik dapat memicu perlekatan C. albicans; oleh karena itu, resin akrilik perlu direndam dalam larutan desinfektan. Uji post hoc Mann-Whitney menunjukkan semua kelompok berbeda bermakna, kecuali kelompok perlakuan I dengan II.
Background:Combination of Nephrolepis exaltata - Hibiscus rosa sinensis (NEHRS) herbal mask proved to decrease nasal mucociliary transport time, increase sinonasal IgA and lung function in textile industry workers. Its protection effect on motorcycle taxi drivers exposed to acute motor vehicle exhaust pollutants has not been proven. The study aimed to demonstrate the protective effect of using NEHRS herbal mask both in the sinonasal immune system and lung function. Methods:This research was non-blinded randomized control trial with pre-post test design. Thirty two motorcycle taxi drivers were randomly assigned into three groups; positive control (n=11) using regular medical mask, negative control (n=10) using nonwoven cloth mask, and intervention group using NEHRS herbal mask (n = 11). Nasal wash was taken by ENT specialist, and the level of sinonasal IgA and IL-6 was reading by ELISA. Pulmonary function parameters were performed using the MAS-1-A spirometer, Data were analyzed with Wilcoxon, Paired t-test, Mann Whitney and One-way ANOVAResults: Sinonasal IgA level were significant decrease in all groups, respectively; intervention 16.31 ± 3.38; control (+)16.24 ± 2.62; control (-)15.28 ± 2.50. The IL-6 level also decrease in all groups in significantly difference (p=0.031), the delta were; intervention -6.92 ± 8.61; control (+) -10.23 ± 7.65; control (-)-8.56 ± 4.37. A significant increased of FEV1 (p=0,005) and PEF (p = 0,005) in the intervention group, but nearly significant of FVC (p=0,053), as well as in control (+); FVC (p=0,017), FEV1 (p=0,005), PEF (p<0,001), and control negatif; FVC (p=0,046), FEV1 (p=0,010), PEF (p=0,005). The test for difference of increasing FVC (p=0,652), FEV1 (p=0,696) and PEF (p=0,670) between all groups not significantly different. Conclusions: NEHRS Herbal mask that worn by motorcycle taxi drivers for 2 weeks decreased IgA and IL-6 sinonasal levels, as well as increased FVC, FEV1, and PEF.
Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is a spherical gram-positive bacterium that forms clusters and is frequently resistant to antibiotics. Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a strain of S. aureus that is resistant to beta-lactam and cephalosporin groups of antibiotics, it is one of the biggest problems in resistant bacteria. Plants that have flavonoids in their extract can inhibit the growth of bacteria by impairing their cytoplasmic membrane. Arrowroot is an example of plants that have flavonoids in their extracts. Objectives: This research aims to determine the antimicrobial effect of arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea L.) methanolic extract against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. Methods: This is true experimental research with a post-test control group design with two control groups and eight experimental groups. The sample of this research utilizes the MRSA strain of S. aureus received from the Microbiology Laboratory of Diponegoro University Faculty of Medicine that was eligible with the inclusion criteria. The research was conducted by using arrowroot extract concentrations 6.5%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 100% to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), and inhibitory zone diameter. Results: MIC and MBC of arrowroot methanolic extract against MRSA is 100%. The arrowroot methanolic extract to have yielded an inhibitory zone diameter is 100% with a mean inhibitory zone diameter of 15.5mm. Conclusion: Arrowroot methanolic extract can inhibit the bacterial growth of MRSAKeywords: Staphylococcus aureus, growth, M. arundinacea L. methanolic extract
<strong>Background</strong><br />Poor air and mask quality in the work environment increase the risks of inflammation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, ongoing oxidative stress, and superoxide dismutase 3 (SOD3) levels in the airways. The study aimed to investigate the effect of the Nephrolepis exaltata - Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (NE-HRS) combination herbal mask on the airways, as measured by ROS and SOD3 levels in the nasal wash of textile industry workers.<br /><br /><strong>Methods</strong><br />This was a pre- and post-test randomized controlled trial, consisting of 30 subjects with ³5-year working time, conducted for eight weeks and monitored every ten days. Subjects were randomized into 3 groups, regular surgical mask group (n=10), NE-HRS combination herbal mask group (n=10) and factory mask group (n=10). SOD3 and ROS levels were determined using ELISA. Data were analyzed with One-way ANOVA and multiple comparison tests.<br /><br /><strong>Results</strong> <br />ROS levels decreased significantly in all groups (p=0.004). Regular surgical masks decreased ROS levels by 67.90 ± 50.66 pg/mL, NE-HRS combination herbal masks by 49.91 ± 45.06 pg/mL, and factory masks by 193.96 ± 128.36 pg/ml. SOD3 levels also decreased but not significantly (p=0.053). Differences in ROS levels between surgical mask and NE-HRS combination herbal mask was not significant (p=0.796). <br /><br /><strong>Conclusion</strong><br />Herbal masks laminated with NE-HRS combination significantly reduced ROS levels among textile industry workers. NE-HRS combination herbal masks have a similar protective effect to the regular surgical mask.
