The use of intelligent 3D model processes such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) represents an interesting and promising tool to be applied extensively in academic curricular components of Civil Engineering courses. In this paper, we have explored a new analysis’ method for identification of interfaces between conventional courses of Civil Engineering and BIM. Particularly, the study focuses on undergraduate course of Civil Engineering of Federal University of Sao Francisco Valley – Brazil. Studying the curriculum components four different categories were analyzed: (a) the relation between the course and BIM; (b) convenient contents of modeling to be applied in class; (c) discussion about phases of building life cycle; (d) building design and applications. It was found that the method can be used to identify when in the educational process and within disciplines, BIM can be discussed and worked. Additionally the method can highlight gaps and needs of new curriculum components in order to discuss specific aspects of modeling, contributing to the adoption of BIM in undergraduate courses of Civil Engineering and Architecture, as well as in related areas.
PALAVRAS-CHAVE: City Information ModelingABSTRACT This paper discusses the City Information Modeling (CIM) paradigm from a wide approach, considering the theoretical and conceptual bias on those and other related terms. The CIM has been pointed by some authors as an extension of the BIM concept for the urban space. However, considering the characteristics of the city comparing to an isolated building and the profusion of concepts in use, some issues need a more deep discussion. These concepts are closely related and have some overlap (that is why sometimes they are misunderstood). Thus, we intended to broaden the discussion to clarify the concept and terminology, and contribute to their use, in addition to improving the development of applications and technologies for planning, management and monitoring the cities. We have no intention of exhausting the theme, due the vastness of issues involved and the reduced space for discussion, but mainly because these issues are still "open", promoting discussion and controversy. .
This paper discusses the methodological approach that is being developed in the state of Bahia in Brazil since 2003, in architectural and urban sites documentation, using extensive digital technologies. Bahia has a vast territory with important architectural ensembles ranging from the sixteenth century to present day. As part of this heritage is constructed of raw earth and wood, it is very sensitive to various deleterious agents. It is therefore critical document this collection that is under threats. To conduct those activities diverse digital technologies that could be used in documentation process are being experimented. The task is being developed as an academic research, with few financial resources, by scholarship students and some volunteers. Several technologies are tested ranging from the simplest to the more sophisticated ones, used in the main stages of the documentation project, as follows: work overall planning, data acquisition, processing and management and ultimately, to control and evaluate the work. The activities that motivated this paper are being conducted in the cities of Rio de Contas and Lençóis in the Chapada Diamantina, located at 420 km and 750 km from Salvador respectively, in Cachoeira city at Recôncavo Baiano area, 120 km from Salvador, the capital of Bahia state, and at Pelourinho neighbourhood, located in the historic capital. Abstract. The Cultural Heritage disappears at a rate higher than we are able, not only, to restore but also to document: human and natural factors, negligence or worst, deliberate demolitions put in danger the collective Architectural Heritage (AH). According to CIPA statements, the recording is important and has to follow some guidelines. The Architectural and Urban Heritage data have to be historically related, critically assessed and analyzed, before to be organized according to a thematic structure and become available for further uses. This paper shows the experiences developed by the Laboratory of Computer Graphics applied to Architecture and Design (LCAD), at the Architecture School of the Federal University of Bahia (FAUFBA), Brazil, in cooperation with the Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM, DICEA Department), Italy, in documenting architectural heritage. The research set up now has been carried out in the historical sites of Bahia, as Pelourinho neighborhood, a World Heritage by UNESCO. Other historical sites are in the plan of this survey, like the cities of Lençóis and Mucugê in Chapada Diamantina region. The aim is to build a technological platform based on low cost digital technologies and open source tools, such as Panoramic Spherical Photogrammetry, Spatial Database, Geographic Information Systems, Three-dimensional Geometric Modeling, CAD technology, for the collection, validation and dissemination of AH.
This paper discusses the experience of the initial phase of introduction of the BIM paradigm in the undergraduate program in Architecture and Urbanism (evening course) of FAUFBA, created under REUNI. We started from the premise that BIM should be adopted gradually and integrated with the various subjects of the course, and should be initiated through the disciplines of graphic representation. The proposal for this course is presented and practices are discussed, as they were experienced in the discipline of Computing and Design II, which deals with this paradigm. It was observed that BIM process requires significant changes, as it encountered some initial resistance from the students. However, this approach increases the understanding of building and facilitates the project documentation. Furthermore, the understanding of the scope of the paradigm was crucial to the effective use of the adopted tool.
This paper presents and discusses the relationship between the concepts of Smart Cities and City Information Modeling (CIM). It conveys the notion that these are complementary and not competing concepts, as one might think at first glance. On the other hand, the paper demonstrates the importance of these concepts to overcome the challenges to the cities of the 21 st century, from findings contained in official documents published by the United Nations (UN), to analyze the growth of world population and the emergence of new cities to house population groups. Finally, this paper argues that the CIM with an inducing factor for the Smart City is an important resource to help improve the quality of life in cities. Keywords: Smart Cities; City Information Modeling; Sustainability; Cities of the Future; Information Modeling. Assim, a super...
