Objective: to know the prevalence and factors associated with frailty in elderly assisted by the Centro Mais Vida de Referência em Assistência à Saúde do Idoso (Mais Vida Health Reference Center for the Elderly) in the North of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Method: cross-sectional study, with sampling by convenience. Data collection occurred in 2015. Demographic and socioeconomic variables, morbidities, use of health services and the score of the Edmonton Frail Scale were analyzed. The adjusted prevalence ratios were obtained by multiple analysis of Poisson regression with robust variance. Results: 360 elderly aged 65 or older were evaluated. Frailty prevalence was 47.2%. The variables associated with frailty were the following: advanced age elderly, who live without a partner, have a caregiver, present depressive symptoms, osteoarticular disease, as well as history of hospitalization and falls in the last twelve months. Conclusion: knowledge of factors associated with frailty allows development of health actions aimed at the elderly. Descriptors: Elderly; Frail elderly; Health Vulnerability; Health of the Elderly; Public Health. OBJECTIVE:To identify variables associated with hospitalizations sensitive to primary care. METHODS:A hospital morbidity survey was conducted using a random sample of 660 patients hospitalized in clinical and surgical wards of hospitals that had service agreements with the Brazilian National Health System, in the municipality of Montes Claros, Southeastern Brazil, between 2007 and 2008. Interviews were held with patients and members of their families using a specific form, and the patients' medical files were investigated. The definition of conditions considered sensitive to primary care was based on the Ministry of Health's list. Associations shown by socioeconomic and health variables in relation to hospitalizations sensitive to primary care were analyzed using bivariate and multiple logistic regression analyses. RESULTS:The percentage of hospitalizations sensitive to primary care in the study group was 38.8% (n = 256). The variables that remained statistically associated with conditions considered sensitive to primary care were: previous hospitalization (OR = 1.62; 95% CI: 1.51;2.28); regular visits to healthcare units (OR = 2.20; 95% CI: 1.44;3.36); low schooling level (OR = 1.50; 95% CI: 1.02;2.20); health checks not performed by the family health team (OR = 2.48; 95% CI: 1.64;3.74); hospitalization requested by physicians who were not part of the family health team (OR = 2.25; 95% CI: 1.03;4.94); and age greater than or equal to 60 years (OR = 2.12; 95% CI: 1.45;3.09). CONCLUSIONS:The variables associated with hospitalizations sensitive to primary care are particularly those relating to patients, such as age, schooling level and previous hospitalization, but regular health checks outside of the Family Health Strategy doubled the likelihood of hospitalization.
Despite some reported peculiarities, parents in different counties assessed QoL and family QoL of their AD children in a similar way. The IDQoL and the DFI may be reliable initial measures for international studies. International study on the influence of the same treatment methods on the IDQoL and the DFI assessments is important.
Objective: To investigate the prevalence of difficulties in adopting initial breastfeeding techniques and their association with breast disorders in postpartum women. Methods: The cross-sectional study was carried out with 276 randomly selected mother-baby pairs in rooming-in in 3 hospitals in a city of Minas Gerais State (southeast Brazil). An assessment protocol was established to evaluate the breastfeeding technique used. The association between the variables studied and breast disorders was determined by the chi-square test followed by logistic regression, with significance level set at 0.05.Results: The main factors indicating difficulties to initiate the breastfeeding techniques were inadequate attachment of the baby to the breast (25%), baby response to the contact with the breast (26.1%) and breast disorders (28.3%). Variables associated with postparturm breast disorders were: adolescent mothers (OR 3.35; 95%CI 1.51-7.44; p=0.003); maternal schooling ≤8 years (OR 2.07; 95%CI 1.01-4.23; p=0.048); and supplement provision to the newborn at the hospital (OR 2.36; 95%CI 1.40-4.92; p=0.003). Mothers working outside the household (OR 0.31; 95%CI 0.16-0.61; p=0.001) served as as protective factor on the multivariate model. Conclusions: The main difficulties in initial breastfeeding were associated with breast disorders, and the factors associated with this problem included demographic and social, variables, as well as others related to the care routine adopted by maternity hospitals.
