Biocompatible membranes are widely used in medicine to stimulate bone repair. Several studies have demonstrated that laser photobiomodulation (PBM) also stimulates osteoblast proliferation and osteogenesis at the fracture site, leading to a greater deposition of bone mass and accelerating the process of bone consolidation. This work assessed the therapeutic effect of 780-nm laser PBM and a polystyrene membrane coated with norbixin and collagen (PSNC) on bone healing in rats with calvarial bone defect. Histological staining, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to evaluate the bone repair process. Four experimental treatment groups were compared: C, control; M, membrane only; L, laser PBM only; and ML, membrane + laser PBM. A bone defect was created in the calvaria of each animal, with each group subdivided into two subgroups that underwent euthanasia after 15 and 30 days treatment. The L and ML groups were irradiated (λ = 780 nm, ED = 6 J/cm, P = 60 mW, t = 4 s) postoperatively on alternate days until they were euthanized. The bone concentration of hydroxyapatite (CHA) showed a clear gradation with increasing phosphate area in the order B (normal cortical bone) > L > M > ML > C for both periods. The PSNC membrane was effective in reducing the inflammatory process and served as a scaffold for bone repair. The laser PBM also showed positive effects on the bone repair process with increased deposition and organization of the newly formed bone. However, laser PBM failed to improve the bioactive properties of the membrane scaffold.

Recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy of coherent light therapy from the red region of the electromagnetic spectrum on the tissue-healing process. This study analysed the effect of non-coherent light therapy (light-emitting diode-LED) with or without silver sulfadiazine (sulpha) on the healing process of third-degree burns. In this study, 72 rats with third-degree burns were randomly divided into six groups (n = 12): Gr1 (control), Gr2 (non-contact LED), Gr3 (contact LED), Gr4 (sulfadiazine), Gr5 (sulfadiazine + non-contact LED) and Gr6 (sulfadiazine + contact LED). The groups treated with LED therapy received treatment every 48 h (λ = 640 ± 20 nm, 110 mW, 16 J/cm(2); 41 s with contact and 680 s without contact). The digital photometric and histomorphometric analyses were conducted after the burn occurred. The combination of sulpha and LED (contact or non-contact) improved the healing of burn wounds. These results demonstrate that the combination of silver sulfadiazine with LED therapy (λ = 640 ± 20 nm, 4 J/cm(2), without contact) improves healing of third-degree burn wounds, significantly reduces the lesion area and increases the granulation tissue, increases the number of fibroblasts, promotes collagen synthesis and prevents burn infections by accelerating recovery.

RESUMOINTRODUÇÃO: Os recursos fisioterapêuticos influenciam positivamente no processo de cicatrização, acelerando as diferentes fases e reduzindo o tempo de lesão através da aplicação de recursos eletrofísicos, tais como ultrassom terapêutico (UST). A interação entre o UST e os tecidos biológicos, é capaz de gerar alterações celulares, por efeitos mecânicos, garantindo resultados satisfatórios. Estudos à base dos extratos vegetais vêm sendo realizados visando comprovar terapias alternativas efetivas capazes de induzir a cicatrização de feridas, uma vez que as plantas medicinais quando comparadas com as modernas terapias medicamentosa, apresentam menores efeitos adversos e baixo custo, quando comparado aos fármacos sintéticos, sendo essenciais para aquisição para a população de baixa renda. OBJETIVO: Avaliar o efeito associado entre o gel à base da casca do cajueiro (Anacardium occidentale L) e o ultrassom terapêutico sobre o processo de cicatrização de feridas cutâneas em camundongos. METODOLOGIA: 24 camundongos (Mus musculus) machos, pesando entre 40 a 50 gramas (g), provenientes do biotério da Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (FACIME), foram utilizados neste estudo. A pesquisa foi composta por 4 grupos (controle, ultrassom pulsado + fonorose, gel à base de cascas da Anacardium occidentale L e ultrassom pulsado), os quais foram tratados em diferentes tempos experimentais (8 e 15 dias). Após a eutanásia dos camundongos, realizou-se as análises macroscópica e microscópica, enquanto o extrato vegetal à base do caule do cajueiro (Anacardium occidentale L) foi avaliado através da prospecção fitoquímica. RESULTADOS: Observa-se que tanto na análise histológica quanto macroscópica, houve melhora do processo inflamatório inicial e aceleração do reparo tecidual nos grupos tratados com o UST, extrato, assim como, através da sua interação. CONCLUSÃO: Conclui-se que as terapias utilizadas no presente estudo, apresentaram resultados satisfatórios sobre o processo de reparação tecidual, os quais foram comprovados pela análise macroscópica e histológica. Purpose: To determine the efficacy of norbixin-based poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) membranes for Achilles tendon repair. Methods: Thirty rats were submitted to total tenotomy surgery of the right Achilles tendon and divided into two groups (control and membrane; n = 15 each), which were further subdivided into three subgroups (days 7, 14, and 21; n = 5 each). Samples were analyzed histologically. Results: Histological analysis showed a significant reduction in inflammatory infiltrates on days 7, 14 (p < 0.0001 for both), and 21 (p = 0.0004) in the membrane group compared to that in the control group. There was also a significant decrease in the number of fibroblasts in the control group on days 7, 14 (p < 0.0001), and 21 (p = 0.0032). Further, an increase in type I collagen deposition was observed in the membrane group compared to that in the control group on days 7 (p = 0.0133) and 14 (p = 0.0107). Acidentes com animais peçonhentos estão relacionados à localização geográfica e hábitos de vida da população envolvida. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os aspectos epidemiológicos e clínicos dos acidentes com animais peçonhentos no estado do Piauí, no período de janeiro de 2007 a dezembro de 2011. Realizou-se um estudo descritivo e retrospectivo utilizando prontuários de pacientes. Dos 125 prontuários, 65 sofreram acidentes ofídicos crotálicos, 35 botrópicos, 07 elapídicos, 01 laquético. Houve ainda 14 acidentes com escorpiões e 01 com aranha. Foram 103 (79,23%) homens e 27 (20,77%) mulheres, com média de idade de 37,7 anos. Quanto à ocupação, 74 (56,92%) eram lavradores e a maior incidência na zona rural com 120 (92,31%) casos. A média de tempo entre acidente e atendimento médico foi de 12,58 horas e tempo médio para início da soroterapia de 11,51 horas. A média de internação hospitalar foram 5 dias. O desfecho principal foi cura com 117 (90,00%) dos casos. A complicação mais comum foi insuficiência renal crônica (22,3%) nos acidentes crotálicos. O esquema de soroterapia não seguiu o padronizado pela Fundação Nacional da Saúde. O perfil destes acidentes no Piauí é semelhante ao nacional, porém, medidas educativas devem ser tomadas em todos os níveis de atenção à saúde para melhoria da assistência prestada aos pacientes.
