Abastract Objective This study aimed to provide the correlation of circadian rhythms of night shift workers with blood glucose levels, saliva, and dental caries. Materials and Methods This study was conducted on night shift and nonshift workers to measure fasting blood glucose (FBG), 2-hour postprandial blood glucose (2-PP BG), saliva flow rate, pH saliva, and caries with the decay-missing-filled total (DMF-T) index. Data analysis was done using independent t-test and correlation test with Pearson correlation. Results There were significant differences in night shift and nonshift workers in FBG (p = 0.000), 2-PP BG (p = 0.000), flow rate saliva (p = 0.000), and DMF-T index (p = 0.001). Correlation test showed positive correlation between FBG and pH saliva (r = 0.42, p = 0.029) and DMF-T index (r = 0.521, p = 0.005) of night shift workers. The 2-PP BG also showed positive correlation with pH saliva (r = 0.493, p = 0.009) and DMF-T index (r = 0.743, p = 0.000). The DMF-T index showed negative correlation with flow rate saliva (r = –0.398, p = 0.04). In the nonshift workers, correlation test showed a correlation between FBG and DMF-T index (r = 0.384, p = 0.048). The DMF-T index showed correlation with flow rate saliva (r = 0.6, p = 0.001). Conclusion There is a circadian rhythm correlation between night shift workers to blood glucose levels, flow rate saliva, pH saliva, and dental caries.
Background and Aim: The use of drugs as a therapy for traumatic ulcers may lead to drug resistance and other side effects. Lactobacillus casei Shirota can affect the number of fibroblasts and blood vessels in wound healing. The aim of this study was to investigate the difference in the number of fibroblast cells and blood vessels after the topical and systemic administration of L. casei Shirota probiotics in Wistar rats with traumatic ulcer. Materials and Methods: Overall, 36 healthy male Wistar rats aged 2-3 months old and weighing 175-250 g in body weight were used as a sample. Traumatic ulcer was made on the labial fornix incisive inferior. The subject rats were divided into groups: (1) A control group over 3 days, (2) a group that used distilled water over 7 days, (3) a group that underwent topical treatment over 3 days, (4) a group that used probiotics administered topically over 7 days, (5) a group that underwent systemic treatment over 3 days, and (6) a group that took oral probiotics for the traumatic ulcers over 7 days. The number of fibroblasts and blood vessels was observed through a hematoxylin-eosin examination. Results: Based on the results of the study, a significant difference was observed in the number of fibroblasts (p=0.00) and blood vessels (p=0.018) in the 3-day topical group that underwent a 3-day systemic administration of probiotics compared with the number of fibroblast cells in the 7-day topical group and 7-day systemic group (p=0.00). Conclusion: Overall, significant differences were observed in the number of fibroblasts and blood vessels in Wistar rats with traumatic ulcer after undergoing the topical and systemic administration of L. casei Shirota probiotics.
Aim:The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of moderate exercise on the elevation of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio.Materials and Methods:Eighteen Mus musculus strain Swiss Webster (Balb/c) were divided into three groups (n=6). K1 and K2 had contact with water 3 times/week for 12 weeks, while the members of the K3 group swam 3 times/week for 12 weeks while carrying load weighed 3% of their body weight. After 5 weeks, they were induced with 0.04 ml oleum olivarum (K1), 0.08 mg benzopyrene/0.04 ml oleum olivarum (K2, K3) 3 times/week for 4 weeks. Immunohistochemistry assays were used to determine the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 expression. The results were analyzed using an independent t-test.Result:The Bax/Bcl-2 ratio increased significantly in K3 compared to K2 (p=0.00).Conclusion:Moderate exercise could increase the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio in oral squamous epithelial cells induced by benzopyrene.
Background: Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease affecting the global population. In Indonesia, the prevalence of periodontal disease has reached 57.6% across all age groups. The bacterium considered as the orginator factor of periodontitis is Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis). Herbal ingredients are currently being promoted as a form of treatment because of the minimal side effects they induce. Andrographis paniculata Nees (ApN) extract produces pharmacological effects, including ones immunomodulatory in character, rendering possible its application as a preparation for treating periodontitis. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to prove the potency of Andrographis paniculata Nees extract in increasing the viability of monocytes following exposure to P. gingivalis. Methods: The sample was divided into four groups, namely; Control negative (C-): monocytes in the medium, not exposed to P. gingivalis; Control positive (C+): monocytes in the medium, exposed to P. gingivalis; Treatment I (AP25): monocytes with 25% ApN extract, exposed to P. gingivalis; Treatment II (AP50): monocytes with 50% ApN extract, exposed with P. gingivalis. The monocytes were exposed to 100 uL P. gingivalis for 4.5 hours and stained with trypan blue. Observations were conducted using an inverted microscope at 200x magnification. The percentage of viable monocytes was calculated based on the ratio of the number of the cells which absorbed trypan blue staining to that which did not. Data was tested using a one-way ANOVA followed by an LSD test. Results: There were significant differences between the treatment groups in the number of viable monocytes (p=0.001) they contained. Monocyte viability was higher in the 25% ApN extract group than that exposed to 50% P. gingivalis. Conclusion: Andrographis paniculata Nees extract demonstrates the potency to increase monocyte viability following exposure to P. gingivalis.
Background: Cancer is a major cause of death worldwide. One of the most common forms of cancer is oral cancer, which can occur due to exposure to carcinogenic factors, such as tobacco cigarettes, alcohol, betel-nut chewing, ultraviolet rays or human papillomavirus infection. Physical exercise is known to have many benefits and can contribute to reducing the risk of cancer, minimising the side-effects of treatment and increasing the curative effect of cancer treatment. Purpose: This study aimed to explain the role of exercise as a method to reduce oral cancer risk. Reviews: Studies examining the impact of exercise on reducing oral cancer risk are currently limited due to a lack of research on this subject. However, according to several laboratory experimental research studies on Mus musculus test subjects, moderate-intensity exercise contributes to suppressing the proliferation and development of oral squamous epithelial cells, which can subsequently become cancer cells. Exercise can also increase intracellular proteins that can induce apoptosis in cells (e.g. wild protein p53, the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2, and caspase-3), and can also decrease p53 mutant expression and transformed cells that can trigger cancer. Exercise must be optimally performed to prevent or control cancer symptoms, although the exact duration and intensity of exercise required to reduce cancer risk in humans have not been established. Conclusion: Exercise plays a role in reducing oral cancer risk by inducing apoptosis and preventing the development of transformed cells that can lead to developing cancer.
Based on UNICEF data, overweight and obesity increased across all age and income groups. Overweight has a risk of developing hyperlipidemia and caused increase free radical and lead to oxidative stress. It’s result in cell damage and impacts on several diseases among others diabetes mellitus. Many Medicinal Plant have biochemical compound which is an important concern because of the potential to reduce free radicals. 0ne of them is ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe var Roscoe). Medicinal plant generally is usually used with various extraction method to obtain the required chemical content. Information of ginger for reduce free radical with maceration extraction method has been reported in previous studies but little information with decoction extraction method. This study aims to determine the reduction of free radicals with MDA (malondialdehyde) as a marker and increased antioxidant activity with SOD (superoxide dismutase) as a marker after administration of ginger. This research was used the true experimental with the randomized posttest only control group design. The groups of experimental were divided into three which G1: control normal G2: High Fat Diet (HFD), G3: HFD + Zingiber officinale Roscoe var Roscoe (ZO) 5 g/day. The period of study was 6 weeks. The level of liver MDA and SOD were investigated by spectrophotometer UV Vis. Based on ANAVA showed that HFD rat increase of body fat weight and MDA (p<0,05) and reduced of total antioxidant SOD (p<0.05). The conclusion of this research decoction of Zingiber officinale Roscoe var Roscoe could attenuate of lipid peroxidation induce by HFD.
