Palavras-chave: ácidos orgânicos, densidade de silagem, nitrogênio amoniacal, pH Fermentation profile and losses in the ensilage of different fractions of the aerial part from four cassava varietiesABSTRACT -The objective of this work was to determine fermentative profile of silage of four cassava varieties. In the study of pH, ammonia nitrogen, organic acid, dry matter (DM) recovery index and silage densities, it was used a 4 × 3 factorial arrangement, with four repetitions, four cassava varieties (Amarelinha, Olho Roxo, Periquita and Sabará) and three aerial part fractions (entire plant, surpluses of the planting and superior third). In the study of dry matter loss by gases and effluents, it was used a 4 × 3 × 7 factorial arrangement, with four replicates, composed of four cassava varieties, three aerial section fractions and seven silo opening dates (1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 28 and 56 days after ensilage). Ensilage was done in laboratory silos made of PVC pipes. The obtained data were submitted to analysis of variance and for average comparison effect, the test of Scott-Knott was performed at the 5% level of significance. There was no significant difference among pH values, organic acid and silage densities of the different varieties but pH, ammonia nitrogen and silage densities of aerial section fractions differed among varieties. Ammonia nitrogen of silages also differed among varieties. Although fresh forage...
AbstractThe objective was to evaluate the ingestive behavior of lactating crossbred cows fed diet formulated to the same level of milk production with different forages (sugarcane silage, sorghum silage, sunflower silage and Tanzania grass pasture). Two Latin Squares 4 x 4 were used, each consisting of four animals, four diets and four experimental periods. Cows were subjected to visual observation for assessment of ingestive behavior. The longer food was for the grass diet, less time at ruminating and longer leisure for the sunflower silage diet. The spent time for dry matter intake was higher for Tanzania grass pasture, and for the consumption of neutral detergent fiber was lower for the sorghum silage diet. The feeding efficiency of dry matter was worse for the Tanzania grass diet. Feed efficiency of neutral detergent fiber was better for the Tanzania grass and silage sorghum diet. The sunflower and sugar-cane silage diets provided the highest efficiency of dry matter and lowest feeding and rumination efficiency of neutral detergent fiber. Diets with different forage altered the feeding behavior of lactating crossbred cows.
The gaseous exchange between an organism and the environment is measured by respirometry or indirect calorimetry. Once the oxygen consumption (O 2) and the production of carbon dioxide (CO 2) and methane (CH 4) are known, the energy losses by gas and heat can be calculated. Energy metabolism and methane production have been studied in the Calorimetry and Metabolism Laboratory of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, located in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Animals used are mainly Zebu cattle and their crossbreeds that represent most beef and dairy cattle breed grazed on tropical pastures. System calibration and routine work are addressed in this text. The results obtained on respirometric chambers are expressed in net energy (NE), which can be net energy for maintenance (NE m), lactation (NE L), weight gain (NE g), and pregnancy (NE p). NE is, in fact, what is used by the animal for maintenance and each productive function. The values of k (conversion efficiency of ME into NE) for maintenance (k m), milk (k L), weight gain or growth (k g), and pregnancy (k p) are determined. Thanks to the peculiarity of the respirometric technique, the same animal can be evaluated several times, in different physiological states and planes of nutrition.
